ALL SET FOR THE BATTLE BY THE BALTIC AT THE MXGP OF LATVIA

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 5 June 2024 – The 2024 FIM Motocross World Championships head straight from Germany to the MXGP of Latvia as the Zelta Zirgs Motocenter near the town of Kegums welcomes the ninth round of the series to its sandy terrain!

Kegums has hosted 18 MXGP rounds since it first ran an MX3 Grand Prix back in 2005, won by the Belgian Sven Breugelmans. It has been on the MXGP calendar every year since 2009, when Antonio Cairoli and Rui Goncalves took the wins in MX1 & MX2, apart from 2014 when it saw a hard-fought Motocross of Nations, won by Team France at the start of a five-year winning streak.

Kegums has been a happy hunting ground for Jeffrey Herlings, with the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing legend notching up a record 7 Grand Prix wins in the soft terrain, including his most recent one, just over a year ago when he registered his only perfect 60-point scoring weekend to date, winning Saturday’s RAM Qualifying Race as well as both races on Sunday.

Last year’s MX2 winner was this year’s points leader, Kay de Wolf on the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing machine.  Both victorious Dutchmen would sadly get injured very soon after to leave them unable to challenge for the 2023 world titles.

The EMX250 Championship reaches its halfway point as the sixth round of eleven, and Mathis Valin holds the red plate on his Bud Racing Kawasaki after two straight overall wins. Gabriel SS24 KTM’s Cas Valk and Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors star Valerio Lata are just four points apart in second and third, but the Dutchman is 26 back from Valin. One half of Latvia’s favourite teenage Motocross brothers, Karlis Reisulis, is 8th in the points for VRT Yamaha Racing, and after representing Latvia in last year’s Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations he will get the crowd behind him for sure!

The EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing series also returns, with Hungarian Noel Zanocz  leading for the Fantic Factory Racing EMX125 team, while Racestore KTM Factory Rookies star Gyan Doensen is 17 points back in second! Zanocz’s Italian teammate Simone Mancini has won the last two rounds to lift himself up to third, just 7 points back from the Dutchman. Local rider Markuss Ozolins is 9th in the points but has reached the top five in a few races on his GASGAS and will enjoy a lot of vocal support from his home crowd!

The reigning MXGP World Champion, Jorge Prado of the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing team, will be praying that the weather doesn’t throw up any surprises at Kegums, as it is only when the rain has poured that he has not emerged victorious from a Grand Prix so far in 2024!  Even though he enjoyed his sixth GP win of the season at the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany, he still lies just two points ahead of Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, who has been the model of consistency and taken advantage when Prado has struggled in wet conditions.

Jeffrey Herlings has moved up into third in the series for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, sitting 66 points behind the leader and in dire need of breaking his one-year winning drought if he is to mount a challenge for this year’s world title.  He passed the Kawasaki Racing Team front-runner Romain Febvre for the season, as the Frenchman pulled out of race one in Germany due to pain from his injured right thumb, and is questionable for this weekend’s event.

Herlings’ record of 7 victories at Kegums consists of three wins in MX2 – in 2010 (his second ever GP win), 2013, and 2016, while he took MXGP honours in 2017, ’18, the third race there in 2020, and of course last season.  He also holds the race wins record of 14. Gajser has won the overall at Kegums four times - 2016, ’19, ’21, and ’22 – with 6 race wins, but Prado has only ever taken the winner’s trophy away once, back in his dominant 2019 MX2 campaign. His only 450 win there was back in 2021. Febvre has been on the podium five times but never quite taken the overall verdict in Latvia, despite taking race wins in 2015 & ‘16.

Another active rider with fond memories of Kegums is Fantic Factory Racing MXGP star Glenn Coldenhoff. Two of his six career GP wins have been here, one in 2015 for Suzuki and more recently the first ever GP win for GASGAS in the first of the three 2020 events.

Pauls Jonass  sadly suffered arm and shoulder injuries in a first corner crash at Teutschenthal last weekend, which leave him unable to compete at his home Grand Prix. A sad blow for the Latvian hero who was enjoying his best season in the class so far, and we all wish him a speedy recovery.
With Jonass out of action the Latvian crowd will have two wildcards to cheer on, in the shape of Tomass Sileika and Uldis Freibergs, son of former Grand Prix rider Lauris.

A win for any of the leading contenders would be a massive psychological boost at one of the toughest tracks of the season, and the battle is sure to be as intense as ever!

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 402 Points; 2. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 400 Points;  3. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 336 Pts; 4. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 327 Points; 5. Pauls Jonass (LAT, HON), 274 Pts; 6. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, KAW), 267 Pts; 7. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, YAM), 263 Pts; 8. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, FAN), 231 Pts; 9. The MX2 class has seen the momentum swing in three different directions so far, with Kay de Wolf taking the first three GP wins for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, Liam Everts the next two for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, and now it is the other Husky-mounted star Lucas Coenen who has an active streak of three in a row.  This has seen him climb to second in the standings, 59 points behind his red plate holding teammate.  Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing man Simon Laengenfelder has been knocked back to third, but that is still credible for the German after he suffered a collarbone break in Portugal. He sits four points back from Lucas.

Everts and his teammate Andrea Adamo, the reigning Champion in the class, are fourth and fifth, while Mikkel Haarup has moved up to sixth for Monster Energy Triumph Racing.

De Wolf is the only previous winner at Kegums to line up in MX2 this year, after his perfect 60-point haul in 2023 which earned him his first red plate.  He will be keen to put a stamp on the series again as a GP winner, something he has not been able to repeat since the MXGP of Sardegna, two months ago.  No one else in the class has even stood on the podium at this circuit before, although Lucas Coenen took a second in race two last season.

The big question is now who can stop the Husqvarna express train as they roll into another sandy venue which is where both of their riders are so strong!  It could be a battle of the teammates, but don’t be surprised to see any of the other top seven challengers to fire themselves into contention!

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 396 Points; 2. Lucas Coenen (BEL, HUS), 337 Pts;  3. Simon Laengenfelder (GER, GAS), 333 Points;  4. Liam Everts (BEL, KTM), 304 Pts; 5. Andrea Adamo (ITA, KTM), 299 Pts;  6. Mikkel Haarup (DEN, TRI), 252 Pts; 7. Rick Elzinga (NED, YAM), 249 Pts; 8. Thibault Benistant (FRA, YAM), 226 Pts; 9. Sacha Coenen (BEL, KTM), 178 Pts; 10. Quentin Prugnieres (FRA, KAW). 152 Pts.

YAMAHA INSIDE MXGP : THE MONSTER ENERGY MXGP OF FRANCE WAS WILD

The Monster Energy MXGP of France was teed up to be one of the most exciting stops on the 2024 calendar. It was not only a home race for both of Yamaha's Official EMX teams but also an event that promised to be the turning point for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2's flying Frenchman, Thibault Benistant.

Despite the ever-changing weather, which saw a mix of rainstorms and bright sunshine, the legendary Saint Jean d'Angely circuit drew a large and lively crowd for the seventh round of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

For the fans decked out in gear supporting TB198, the narrative they had hoped for soon took an unexpected twist when the home hero suffered a frightening fall down one of the fastest, steepest, and most technical descents. Thibault was taken to the onsite medical center, where he was miraculously cleared of all injury. However, a later scan showed a small crack in the wing of his C5 vertebra. Fortunately, the gritty Frenchman walked out of the hospital that same day and returned to the track. "I feel okay despite everything. Just some pain in my a** muscle when I bend my leg, and it sucks to miss my home GP," Thibault expressed his disappointment when he got back to the track, "when I finally remembered where I am, I started to think actually, I feel okay, I can still race, but then I just got really tired and did not feel too good" he explained, "So, I knew something more was wrong. It turned out to be a small crack in my C5, but honestly, when I watched the crash back, I think I was quite lucky because it could have been much worse. At this point, we need to focus on the positive."

With Thibault sidelined and on the path to recovery, the spotlight shifted to the European Championship. The MJC Yamaha Official EMX125 and VRT Yamaha Official EMX250 teams were out in full force, rocking Yamaha's flashy white and pink livery to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the YZ at their home Grand Prix.

The throwback livery was introduced at the Monster Energy MXGP of Belgium last year as a nod to the YZs of 1993, the model year that Belgian legend Marnicq Bervoets tested as a factory Yamaha rider back in 1992. Marniq snagged numerous Grand Prix wins and five World Championship medals throughout his career. As a heartwarming moment for the weekend, he watched his past blend with his future as his son, Jarne, paid homage to that iconic 90’s style.

"The 90s were better!" Jarne confirmed, despite the fact that he was born in 2009. "I've watched videos from back then, and the fans would be partying all night. It was crazy! It looked better!"

Adding to the excitement was MJC's rising star Mano Faure, who blazed through the mud and slop of his home round with the poise of a seasoned pro. Despite a minor spill in Race Two, the 14-year-old powered his GYTR-kitted YZ125 to a 2-4 scorecard, which earned him a well-deserved spot on the podium.

PERFECT WIN AND RED PLATE FOR VALIN ON HOME SOIL IN EMX250 WHILE ITS TWO IN A ROW FOR MANCINI IN EMX125 PRESENTED BY FMF RACING

ST JEAN D’ANGELY (France) 19 May 2024 – The fourth round of the EMX250 and fifth of EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing went to St Jean D'Angely during the Monster Energy MXGP of France. As we are now used to witness, the French fans show so much passion and enthusiasm for motocross and came in numbers, braving the changing weather conditions over the weekend which made this round another exceptional event.

The French round went perfectly for Bud Racing Kawasaki's Mathis Valin in EMX250 with a 1-1 and grabing the Red Plate for the first time this season, giving the the home fans a lot to cheer on in the incredible atmosphere. In EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing a back to back overall win for Fantic Factory Racing EMX125’s Simone Mancini showed how he placed himself as a serious contender for the championship.

In Race 1, several riders got involved in a crash on the first corner, including JM Honda Racing’s Maximilian Werner and VRT Yamaha Racing’s Ivano Van Erp. They eventually fought back up to 20th and 15th respectively.
However, the one that came out on top after the first turn was Luca Ruffini from MAXBARTMOTOSPORT. On the opening lap, Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors’s Mads Fredsoe followed in 2nd but not for long as he made a mistake with his feet slipping off the peg and allowed home rider Bud Racing Kawasaki's Mathis Valin to pass him for 2nd.

Meanwhile, two of the strongest challengers in the title, Gabriel SS24 KTM's Cas Valk and Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors’s Valerio Lata both had a terrible start. Valk managed an exceptional comeback from 25th on the opening lap to 7th while Lata had issues and could only finished 24th.

Young Frenchie Valin, surely pushed by the home fans, rode to the occasion and kept charging to take the inside of Ruffini on lap 4 and take the lead. Ruffini had another local rider going after him on the same lap with WZ Racing Team’s Maxime Grau who perfectly executed his move outside-inside to go 2nd.

Saad Soulimani from Ghidinelli Racing was another great performer as he took a good start and moved up to 4th by the lap 8. Soulimani kept attacking and passed Ruffini for 3rd on lap 13 of 15 to get a good option for the final podium with Ruffini settling or 4th in the end.

Still on lap 8, Alexis Fueri from Fantic Factory Racing MX2 who had a good start and was 6th crashed and finished 13th. Notably, local rider Toni Giorgessi rode very strongly to finish 6th!

In the end it was a French 1-2 with Valin comfortably winning in front of Grau giving the him passionate fans something to hope for in the second race.

In Race 2, Ruffini made the holeshot once again, and Valin passed him for the lead once again but this time in the opening lap. Valk was also on it from the start and moved up to 2nd.

A multi-rider crash in the first turn included Grau who made a herculean effort to move up to 9th on lap 4. Meanwhile VRT Yamaha Racing’s Karlis Reisulis made his way up to 3rd showing some good speed and the fastest lap on lap 2.

Behind the top 3, Fredsoe and Van Erp managed to pass Ruffini who faded in the race. The outstanding Grau found himself in 6th place on lap 6 which showed the hunger of the local rider to perform in front of his fans, putting him also on the second stop of the podium at that time. Grau started to push behind Van Erp for 5th.
While a battle for position happened behind, the immaculate leader, Valin pulled away at the lead increasing the gap with Valk to 5.2 seconds.

Fredsoe moved down to 6th on lap 9 as Van Erp and Grau made clever passes with better lines while the 2n place was under threat, as Valk made a couple of nervous mistakes with an aggressive Reisulis closing on him with 5min + 2 to go.

On lap 11, a fiery Reisulis committed on his line with a better drive to pass Valk for 2nd and the clocking the fastest lap in the same time. Reisulis kept going and began the close the gap with Valin but it was time for the French rider to pick up the pace and keep a comfortable cushion showing that he was very much in control over the weekend.

It wasn’t the red plate’s day as Lata had trouble at the start again which made it difficult to get good results. He managed to finish in 13th position but lost the red plate to Valin and got passed in the standings by Valk too.

It was the perfect home weekend for Valin who grabbed the maximum point to win his first overall of the season and the red plate at the same time, and what better than on home soil to do it! Grau was the other incredible rider in France after coming back from the last positin in race 2 to finish 4th and 2nd overall! Valk closed the podium with 7-3 that leaves him in the 2nd place of the Championship, 23 points behind Valin.

Mathis Valin: “It was amazing! I started very good and passed first after few corners. What an amazing weekend to win on my home GP and doing it with two race wins is perfect! I’m so happy!”

In Race 1 of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing, Filippo Mantovani took the holeshot with blistering start but it was a clever move in the inside from Simone Mancini in the second turn that put him in the lead with Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC's Mano Faure following closely behind. Mantovani in 3rd with RFME GASGAS MXJunior Team’s Salvador Perez 4th after few turns.

Then with the ruts deepening few riders started to encounter some difficulties such as Mantovani who nearly fell down with Jarne Bervoets from Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC clipping his front wheel on the Italian’s bike while trying to take him on the outside on lap 3. After that, Mantovani lost his way and made some mistakes to finish 12th while Bervoets managed a good 5th place in the end.

Meanwhile as Fantic Factory Racing EMX125’s Noel Zanocz went on the charge after an average start and quickly move his way up taking on Mantovani on lap 3 to move 4th and then 3rd on lap 6 when Perez completely went out of track after losing control. Perez came back straight back to it in 4th where he would stay until the end.

While Mancini was cruising at the top of the race, Faure crashed out of 2nd with Zanocz again benefitting from it and going 2nd. However, the young French was feeling the track and came back to overtake the Hungarian red plate and take the 2nd place back on lap 9 until the end. Zanocz secured his 3rd spot until the end.

It was an up and down race for another contender for the Championship, Gyan Doensen from Racestore KTM Factory Rookies Team who, despite starting well had to settle for 8th in the end after never really finding his rhythm.

In the end it was a comfortable race win for the Italian star Mancini who took a good option for the final overall win.

In race 2, Zanocz this time took the strongest start, with his teammate Mancini just behind and Faure 3rd. Maenwhile, a handful of riders went down after a couple of turns with Perez and Bervoets involved.

Doensen managed to stay in the mix in 4th. The top 4 riders kept the same order for a while with not many attacks. Following his misshape, Perez climbed his way up pretty quickly after coming from the back going just outside the top 20 on lap 3. Markuss Ozolins got to 5th early on and kept his rank but started to get threatened by Cole McCullough from Maddii Fantic by Milwaukee who whittled the gap down as the race went on. On lap 9, while beginning to shape an attack McCullough crashed and let Ozolins off the hook.

Francesco Bellei from Dreams Racing made an excellent come back to mov from 11th to 5th in the end for 5th overall. The top 4 settled in their position until two laps to go when Faure went down which gifted a couple of point for Doensen although the podium was still on for the Frenchman as he ended third overall for an important podium at his home round. Solid winner Zanocz missed out on the overall win but finished second in the podium and kept the red plate.

It was a strong 1-2 for Mancini that put him on the top step of the podium for the 3rd time this year and a good double for Fantic Factory Racing. Mancini is also asserting himself as one to watch for the Championship and his teammate and red plate Zanocz wh finished 2nd overall.

Simone Mancini:  "I’m so happy with two in a row, and my third win. Today the track was very difficult with the mud, I passed second in the first lap but couldn’t catch Noel (Zanocz) in the second race. It was not easy as the track was softer but the staff and the team made a great work and congratulations to everyone. Now see you in Latvia!”
