Elzinga and Valk Secure EMX Overall Victories at the French Round

ERNÈE (France) 5 June 2022 – Rounds five of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX250 Championships have concluded in Ernèe with overall victories from Fantic Factory Racing’s Cas Valk and Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Rick Elzinga.

In EMX250 race one, it was Lucas Coenen of Jumbo Husqvarna BT Racing who led the way ahead of Mike Gwerder of WZ Racing Team and Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cornelius Toendel.

Gwerder briefly found himself in the lead, before being passed back by the Belgian, who led for three laps after that. Coenen then crashed which allowed Toendel into the driving seat after he got around Yago Martinez who was second at the time.

Meanwhile Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Rick Elzinga had to fight through the field as he started in around the top 10. At that point of the race, he was fifth behind his teammate Dave Kooiker who he passed on lap four.

Toendel looked solid in the lead, though made a slight mistake once, but with a big gap managed to hold on to first place. But he crashed once more on lap 10, which allowed Martinez to benefit and take over control of the race as the series leader dropped to ninth.

Martinez managed to bring it home and secure his first EMX250 race victory ahead of Elzinga who fought back to second, while Jorgen-Mathias Talviku of Sahkar Racing crossed the line in third. Toendel finished ninth.

In the second race, Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Haakon Osterhagen was the leading rider into the first corner as Eddie Wade of Sahkar Racing, L. Coenen, Toendel, Martinez and Sacha Coenen of Jumbo Husqvarna BT Racing followed behind.

Wade then crashed moments later which allowed Toendel to move up to second as he also got around L. Coenen.

Further down the order, Elzinga was once again buried among the pack and had to work his way through. Though he did this fairly swiftly as he took sixth from Maximillian Spies of Schmicker Racing, then fifth from Martinez and by the fourth lap was already ahead of Osterhagen in third.

L. Coenen was another rider to pass Osterhagen, who was looking like he was struggling, as Elzinga set the fastest lap of the race and was focusing his attention on catching the leaders.

At the halfway stage, a three-way battle for the win began between Toendel, L. Coenen and Elzinga. A couple of mistakes crept in among all three, though Toendel was able to hold on, despite immense pressure from Coenen as Elzinga lost some ground to the leaders.

In the end, it was a photo finish between Toendel and L. Coenen, as the Fantic rider crossed just 0.221 ahead of the Husqvarna rider, while Elzinga finished second, as Osterhagen held on to fourth ahead of Spies.

A second and a third-place finish gave Elzinga his third overall of the season, ahead of Toendel and Martinez who celebrated his first podium in the EMX250 category.

Heading into round six of the championship, Elzinga now holds the red plate once again, though by a very slim margin as he is just one point ahead of Toendel in the standings. Meanwhile Bonacorsi is third.

Rick Elzinga: “Finally cancelled out my poor weekend in Maggiora. Since then, I think I’ve been doing pretty well, won the first few rounds and then Maggiora was unlucky and then second in Sardegna and here the overall, so I think I’m doing pretty well. Happy with my riding, was a bit tough coming from Spain as I was a bit ill… I’m getting back into the books for school too. But of course I’m going to enjoy this moment and thanks to my crew”.

In the first EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing heat, it was Toni Giorgessi who took the holeshot ahead of Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC’s Ivano Van Erp and Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Alexis Fueri, as a number of riders went down in the first corner.

Van Erp briefly took over the lead, though Giorgessi responded immediately before the Dutchman was able to find his way to the front for good by the end of the opening lap. Further behind, Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cas Valk was making progress up to the top three and by the third lap was leading the way with Karlis Alberts Reisulis of Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC just behind him.

Van Erp crashed, as Valk also dropped a few positions, while K. Reisulis began to come under pressure from Fueri and by the seventh lap there was a new rider in the lead. The Frenchman stretched the gap out immediately and was looking solid for the next several laps.

As the rain intensified and track conditions became more challenging mistakes began to creep in amongst the field and with two laps left to go, we saw a change for the lead once again as Valk moved into first place.

In the end, Valk crossed the line 27.086 seconds ahead of Fueri who finished second, while K. Reisulis was third ahead of Van Erp and Mathis Valin.

In the second race, it was Van Erp who led the way ahead of K. Reisulis, Tom Brunet of Team CRT KTM Veritise, Fueri, Valin and Valk.

Reisulis was not looking to waste time as he made several attempts in the first half of the race to get around Van Erp. He really had to work for it but finally on the ninth lap got around the Dutchman and took over the lead.

Giorgessi then crashed out of ninth, as Valk progressed through the field. The Fantic rider made his way up to fourth and then after setting the fastest lap of the race was all over the rear wheel of Fueri. The two teammates battled, with Fueri eventually making a mistake and crashing which allowed Valk through into third and then up to second as Van Erp crashed with four laps to go.

In the end, K. Reisulis won the race with a 2.980 second advantage over Valk, Van Erp, Fueri and Marc-Antoine Rossi of Tech 32.

A win and a second gave Valk his third overall victory of the season, as he topped the podium ahead of K. Reisulis and Fueri. As it stands, Valk extends his championship lead to 212 points, while K. Reisulis now occupies second with 180 points, just two points ahead of Fueri who drops to third.

Cas Valk: “It was a nice weekend, track was though all weekend, but I managed to do solid two races, second and first for first overall. I’m really happy and a big thanks of course to my team, without them it’s not possible. I’m really excited for next week”.

Jacobi and Längenfelder Lead Qualifying at the Monster Energy MXGP of France

ERNÈE (France) 4 June 2022 – Qualifying day of the Monster Energy MXGP of France proved to be a good one for German’s Henry Jacobi of JM Honda Racing and Simon Längenfelder of Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing who topped the qualifying in MXGP and MX2.

Despite moments of heavy rain, the riders battled on and gave the fans a preview of what can be expected for tomorrow’s races.

Alongside the main MXGP and MX2 action, we also witnessed the first races of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX250 which were won by Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cas Valk and Yago Martinez.

Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini crashed in free practice and will not be able to line up for the rest of the event.

The MXGP qualifying heat got under way with Fantic Factory Team Maddi’s Nicholas Lapucci grabbing the holeshot ahead of JM Honda Racing’s Henry Jacobi and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux.

Jacobi was not wasting precious time, as he took over the lead early on, while Renaux slipped back to fifth, which allowed Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Brian Bogers and Beta SDM Corse’s Jeremy Van Horebeek into third and fourth.

Renaux made a mistake, as Jacobi stretched his lead to 8.834 seconds, while Van Horebeek and Benoit Paturel of Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz moved up to third and fourth.

Further down the order, Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Ben Watson got passed by F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Jed Beaton. The Aussie eventually finished in 9th, while Watson did not finish the heat.

At the halfway stage, Renaux was looking to fight back as he got around Paturel and set his sights on Van Horebeek. The two came together as Renaux looked for a way to pass, which resulted in the Frenchman going down.

The race leader, Jacobi also ran into some trouble of his own as he tipped over in the closing stages, though with a lead of more than 30 seconds was safe and managed to bring it home in P1. He was victorious ahead of Van Horebeek, Brent Van doninck of Riley Racing while Renaux finished fourth ahead of Paturel.

Henry Jacobi: “I got a good start and then I thought it was not too difficult actually, and maybe I was the only one that saw everything good because I was first after half a lap. You had to be careful on some parts and I tried to manage the race. I was also a bit surprised after halfway when I saw on my pit board that I had such a big gap, but I was just enjoying being up front, because I’m not used to it”.

MXGP - Qualifying Race – Top 10 Classification: 1. Henry Jacobi (GER, Honda), 26:44.373; 2. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Beta), +0:16.425; 3. Brent Van doninck (BEL, Yamaha), +0:20.259; 4. In MX2 qualifying, it was Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder who took the holeshot ahead of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Thibault Benistant, Petr Polak of JM Honda Racing, Tom Vialle of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing and Isak Gifting from Hitachi KTM Fuelled by Milwaukee.

Meanwhile, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts had trouble in the start as he, along with a few other riders, crashed in the first turn. Geerts did not carry on with the race but there are no details on whether he was hurt as a result of the incident.

Back at the front, Längenfelder had clear track as he led the way ahead of Vialle who managed to get himself into second ahead of Benistant. Vialle set the fastest lap of the race as he looked to close in on the leader, though Längenfelder was able to stay mistake free and in control as he battled the muddy conditions.

Gifting dropped out of seventh, as Diga Procross KTM Racing’s Liam Everts found his way up to fourth ahead of Polak, F&H Kawasaki’s Kevin Horgmo and Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Stephen Rubini.

Längenfelder extended his gap over the course of the following laps which made it impossible for the rest of the field to catch him and in the end, he went on to secure his second qualifying in MX2 this season. Vialle finished second ahead of Benistant, Horgmo and Rubini, as Everts dropped back to sixth.

Simon Längenfelder: “It was a good race. I had a good start and was lucky to be out in front from the beginning, it made the race a lot easier I would say. We are lucky that we didn’t have rain [during the race] and the track was muddy, but it was ok. I could hold on to first place and get a nice gap in the end and could ride it to the finish”.

MXGP Geared-Up for Epic Monster Energy MXGP of France

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 1 June 2022 – Next on the FIM Motocross World Championship calendar is an old favourite among the paddock, as this weekend Ernèe is set to host this year’s Monster Energy MXGP of France.

It has been a while since MXGP visited the legendary venue, in fact the last time a Grand Prix race took place in Ernèe was back in 2017 which featured Clement Desalle, Antonio Cairoli and Gautier Paulin on the premiere class podium.

Over the course of the last three decades, Ernèe has hosted MXGP numerous times, the first being in 1990 when American Donny Schmit won the 125cc GP on his Suzuki.

This year big things can be expected from the French Grand Prix, as the ‘Circuit Raymond DEMY’ has always provided some of the biggest races in motocross history, take for example the epic 2015 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations that saw Team France top the podium in front of tens of thousands of passionate French fans who proudly sang the ‘La Marseillaise’, along with the legendary 2003 Grand Prix that saw the ten-time World Champion Stefan Everts become the first ever rider to win the triple crown (winning three classes on the same day).

Alongside the regular MXGP and MX2 action, we will also see rounds of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX250 which are currently led by Fantic Factory Team Maddii's Cas Valk and Cornelius Toendel.

There is no doubt that all eyes will be on last weekend’s Grand Prix winner Maxime Renaux of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing who is heading into his home race as the favourite to win. Securing his first ever overall victory in the MXGP class is no doubt going to be a big confidence and motivation boost for the Frenchman to put on his best performance in front of his home fans.

In addition, he is also in the title fight with Team HRC’s Tim Gajser who is 66 points ahead of Renaux. Gajser has struggled in the last two GP’s and has failed to make it onto the podium on both occasions. The French GP will be an opportunity for the Slovenian to get back to winning ways that he showed in the first half of this season and put his illness behind him. For Gajser, it will be the first time that he will race in Ernée since the Monster Energy FIM MXoN in 2015 when he won the B final, as in 2017 he was injured and did not line-up for the Sunday races.

Also needing to make up some valuable points and looking to get back on the box will be Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who missed out on the top three at the Spanish Grand Prix. Prado was looking strong in both races, running at the sharp end before a couple of mistakes and a crash in race two took him out of the running for the overall victory. Prado remains fourth in the standings but we’re still at the halfway stage and there is still time for the Spaniard to claw back some points and get back in the title fight.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff and Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Brian Bogers had a good weekend in Spain as they finished second and third on the podium. Both riders now have two podiums each this season and hopefully they can continue in this direction this weekend and deliver another solid result. Colenhoff was also the qualifying race winner, making it his second this season (Portugal and Spain) and he is clearly showing that he is strong also on the hard-pack tracks.

Looking back at the previous results in 2017, Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer were on the box back when they were fighting for the MX2 title. Jonass won the GP, while Seewer finished third, with Benoit Paturel of Team Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz separating the pair as he finished second on the podium. Jonass and Seewer have some podiums under their belt this season already and this could be another opportunity for them to get back on the box. Meanwhile, for Paturel this will also be a weekend to deliver strong result!

Other names to look out for this weekend include JT911 KTM Racing’s Jordi Tixier, Riley Racing’s Christophe Charlier and Pierre Moine who will all look to put on their best performance at their home round.

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 404 points; 2. Maxime Renaux (FRA, YAM), 338 p.; 3. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 292 p.; 4. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 290 p.; 5. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, YAM), 272 p.; 6. Brian Bogers (NED, HUS), 243 p.; 7. Ruben Fernandez (ESP, HON), 242 p.; 8. Pauls Jonass (LAT, HUS), 196 p.; 9. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, YAM), 194 p.; 10. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, BET), 189 p.;

In MX2, the favourite will no doubt be Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle who was victorious last weekend with the perfect 1-1 score card. Vialle also won the French GP last season in Lacapelle Marival, so pressure will be on the Frenchman to deliver his home fans the top step of the podium.

Vialle also enters the 10th round of the series with the red plate and a 10-point advantage over Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts who had a couple of big crashes, which made for a difficult weekend in Arroyomolinos last week. Though Geerts is known to bounce back when he needs to, so of course we can expect him to be a serious threat for the win this time around.

Team Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Stephen Rubini is a rider to look out for this weekend, as the Frenchman has a real shot of finishing on the box at his home GP. Rubini already has a podium under his belt which he achieved in Maggiora and was close again last weekend in Spain after an impressive third in race one. There is no doubt that Rubini is strong in hard-pack conditions, so Ernèe should be a track suited to him and it will be interesting to see what he can deliver this weekend.

Another favourite for the podium this weekend is Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder who finally got back on the box in Spain with a consistent 2-3 result in the races. It was his first podium since his mega performance in Matterley Basin where he won the qualifying and both races, so should give him a confidence boost heading into the weekend and hopefully we will see more of the German at the sharp end.

Diga Procross KTM Racing’s Liam Everts turned some heads at the Spanish Grand Prix as he delivered two very solid results to finish fourth overall and just one point shy of the podium. Everts has been building his confidence this season, during what is his rookie year in the MX2 class. It’s been nice to see him build-up his results and hopefully a podium will soon be coming for the young rider.

F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Kevin Horgmo and Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Mikkel Haarup both showed promise in Spain, but some mistakes and crashes proved to be costly for a top overall score. Both riders can be expected to be fast this weekend and it will be interesting to see whether they can challenge Vialle and Geerts who are currently the front-runners of the field.

Of course, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Thibault Benistant will be looking for top scores at his home round and will be fighting for a chance to stand on the box again, as will Pierre Goupillon and Tom Guyon of Team VRT KTM Veritise who will once again line-up for the MX2 races this weekend.
