The Sand Storm

It’s an old but still golden location where round five of the FIM Motocross World Championship will take place and its name should be familiar to you, but if you are new to the world of motocross, Valkenswaard is the name of the circuit that will host the MXGP of Europe in The Netherlands.

Situated next to the Eurocircuit road course, between Eindhoven and the Belgian boarder, Valkenswaard marks the first of the sand races on the 2015 calendar. Renowned for its popularity and hugely animated crowds, which are bolstered by the influx of ever passionate and crazy Belgian motocross fans crossing the border, along with the usual die-hard Jeffrey Herlings fans, rounds of MXGP in the sands of Holland are integral parts of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

The circuit of Valkenswaard was our feature circuit in the most recent issue of MXGP MAG, to READ, click HERE.

French domination at the European Championship EMX250 & EMX125 opener

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino), 19 April 2015 – The first rounds of the 2015 European Championship EMX250 and EMX125 took place at one of the most striking locations on the MXGP calendar this weekend. Shadowed by the stunning Dolomite Mountains and in close vicinity to Lake Garda, the clay based traditional styled circuit in Pietramurata always attracts thousands of hysterical fans from all areas of the world, which provided an amazing atmosphere for the young riders who by racing the EMX championships are dipping their toes in the world of professional motocross.

This weekend two young French riders in the form of Bud Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Maxime Desprey and Kemea Yamaha Yamalube’s Maxime Renaux stood top of the box in the EMX250 and EMX125 respectively.

The young guns of the EMX125 had the luxury of being the first race of the day. This meant they had a well-watered track, which on top of clay and rock was going to make things a little more interesting with traction being hard to find.

When the gates dropped, despite the unpredictability of the circuit it was Finland’s Miro Sihvonen and Kemea Yamaha Yamalube’s Maxime Renaux who got off to great starts and controlled the race from start to finish to take home the first and second place respectively.

While Sihvonen’s race win was impressive considering he was only eleventh in race one yesterday, as was the performance of KTM Factory Junior’s young Kiwi Josiah Natzke who had the slick and technical circuit dialed, passing his teammate, the holeshot getter Jorge Prado Garcia, early on in the race to solidly claim third.

Meanwhile, Prado had a few sketchy moments but managed to save them for fourth while Marchetti Racing Team’s Kim Savaste came home in a solid fifth.

With the combination of results from both races Kemea Yamaha Yamalube’s Maxime Renaux took the first EMX125 round victory of the year with his pair of second place finishes. Meanwhile the race one run away story of Danish rider Glen Meier resulted in second overall with KTM Factory Juniors Jorge Prado Garcia rounding out the top three.

When the gates fell for the second race of the EMX250, everyone was in trouble with the race one winner Bud Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Maxime Desprey pulling a holeshot out of the bag. While Desprey, a former MX2 competitor, checked out, the Italian fans were able to let their excitement levels sky rocket with local lad Simone Zecchina holding onto second ahead of Team Yamaha Ausio Yamalube’s Ander Valentin.

Zecchina and Valentin went wheel-to-wheel for the majority of the race on the tricky chopped up circuit, but Valentin eventually made the pass mid-race and threw Zecchina off of his rhythm. As Valentin went after the race leader Desprey, Wilvo Forkrents Adam Sterry and J-Tech Honda’s Nick Kouwenberg were picking off riders after getting off to bad starts.  After a race full of bar bashing, both Sterry and Kouwenberg managed to get around Zecchina for third and fourth leaving the Italian in fifth.

After a perfect weekend of two race wins Bud Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Maxime Desprey took the overall victory here at round one of the European Championship EMX250. Meanwhile Wilvo Forkrent KTM’s Adam Sterry secured two podium finishes, a second and a third, for second overall with the Spaniard Team Yamaha Ausio Yamalube’s Ander Valentin rounding off the podium with his fifth and second place finishes.

The finest fight for MXGP of Trentino pole!

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino), 18 April 2015 – While it was only qualifying, the racing we witnessed today at round four of the FIM Motocross World Championship in Pietramurata was by far the climax of the season so far. It was intense beyond belief with three different MXGP race leaders going down. Both FIM World Champions Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli and Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Ryan Villopoto crashed in the same rut but on different laps, while Team HRC’s Gautier Paulin washed out a few turns after the finish line all on his own.

Not necessarily taking full advantage of the carnage, as he was in fact the fastest guy on the track all day, Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev mastered the tricky, slick and chopped up surface here in Pietramurata to take his first ever qualifying heat win, as well as the first win of 2015 for Honda. Meanwhile nothing was out of the ordinary in MX2 with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings taking his fourth consecutive qualifying heat victory.

If the MXGP qualifying race here at MXGP of Trentino is setting the standard for race day, we are in for a treat. Right from gate drop, the race was bound to be epic. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli took the holeshot, which typically results in a check-out performance, except when you have the likes of Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Ryan Villopoto and Team HRC’s Gautier Paulin hot on your tail.

So there it was. The race we had all been waiting for. Three of the most highly regarded riders going one, two and three around turn one. While initially Cairoli appeared to be in control, Paulin, who was feeling the pressure from his Team HRC teammate Evgeny Bobryshev surprisingly dropped the hammer on RV2 and took over second.

While our attention shifted to the impressiveness of Paulin’s speed, Cairoli crashed! The crowd, being Italians went nuts and as we all turned to see Cairoli peeling himself out of the mud, we also lost Paulin who had also made a mistake a few turns earlier.

So, in the matter of a lap Villopoto had the lead and flashbacks of Thailand were being spoken of. Would the American run away with it? We all knew it was possible.

Suddenly, the craziest race ever, just got a little crazier. Villopoto started picking up the pace, putting in that relentless charge he has become known for, while Bobryshev was dealing with the angry or hungry, depending on your perspective, duo of Cairoli and Paulin.  As Villopoto begun to distance himself over Bobryshev ever so slightly, he then threw it away in exactly the same rut that had caught Cairoli out earlier.

With Villopoto hitting the deck, Bobryshev found himself in the lead and managed to control it for the few laps that remained. Bobby qualified on pole for the first time in his career as Cairoli managed to bounce back for a narrow second over Paulin and Villopoto.

Meanwhile Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube’s Romain Febvre put in another impressive ride for fifth after passing the early red plate holder Red Bull Husqvarna IceOne Factory Racing’s Max Nagl who ended up coming home in sixth.

As for the actual red plate holder, Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Clement Desalle, he collided with Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Tyla Rattray on lap one which resulted in Rattray receiving medical attention. Desalle did manage to remount, but was so far back, twenty-second place was the best he could do.

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS, Honda), 25:03.328; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:01.837; 3. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Honda), +0:03.865; 4. Ryan Villopoto (USA, Kawasaki), +0:04.775; 5. Romain Febvre (FRA, Yamaha), +0:06.154; 6. Maximilian Nagl (GER, Husqvarna), +0:07.060; 7. Shaun Simpson (GBR, KTM), +0:08.192; 8. Ken de Dycker (BEL, KTM), +0:25.535; 9. Steven Frossard (FRA, KTM), +0:28.968; 10. Xavier Boog (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:32.727

As the rain lashed down right before the MX2 qualifying heat race, curiosity started to mount. The Pietramurata circuit is rock based, and with the circuit drying out over the morning, the blue groove and marbley base became greasy providing the riders with an extra challenge.

When the gates dropped it was Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Aleksandr Tonkov who was eager to avoid getting showered in pebbles, and took the holeshot. While the Russian led the first lap it wasn’t long before Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings went by, which was a move that was later replicated by Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser. With Tonkov dropping back to third and appearing to tire, the defending MX2 world champion Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jordi Tixier pushed through.

Meanwhile a duo of stoney hard pack track specialists, Monster Energy Kawasaki Kawasaki Racing Team’s Dylan Ferrandis and Standing Construct Yamaha Yamalube’s Valentin Guillod, were on missions of their own. Both riders had had horrible starts but managed to pick off a decent amount of riders to finish fourth and fifth respectively while Tonkov managed to hold on to finish sixth.

MX2 Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 24:59.244; 2. Tim Gajser (SLO, Honda), +0:14.467; 3. Jordi Tixier (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:20.511; 4. Dylan Ferrandis (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:23.175; 5. Valentin Guillod (SUI, Yamaha), +0:27.227; 6. Aleksandr Tonkov (RUS, Husqvarna), +0:28.657; 7. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), +0:29.319; 8. Jens Getteman (BEL, Honda), +0:39.629; 9. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, Suzuki), +0:40.411; 10. Max Anstie (GBR, Kawasaki), +0:41.759

Adding to the awesomeness of the weekend, the European Championships EMX250, EMX125 and EMX150 also took place. After a day of practice and qualifying, all three classes rounded out the day with their first runs at championship points.

In the EMX250 it was a run-away performance for Bud Racing Kawasaki Monster Energy’s Maxime Desprey who led the race from start to finish while the battle behind him was a little more epic.

While the entire race was wheel-to-wheel, Wilvo Forkrent KTM’s Adam Sterry managed to wrap up second just ahead of J-Tech Honda Racing’s Nick Kouwenberg.

Meanwhile in the EMX125, KTM Kosak racing’s Glen Meier was quick to snatch the lead from the young Spaniard KTM Factory Junior’s Jorge Prado Garcia who ended up making a few mistakes and dropping back to fourth. In the meantime Kemea Yamaha Yamalube’s Maxime Renaux was pinned for second, holding off a tough challenge from the Italian fan favorite Morgan Lesiardo who finished up in third.

As for the Honda European Championship EMX150 class, it was Finnish Emil Weckmann who pulled the holeshot and didn’t look back while a pair of Swedes in Albin Larsen and Tim Edberg strove second and third.

Pietramurata prepared for an epic round of MXGP

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino), 15 April 2015 – Italians are known for their passion. Yes, it is widely accepted that they do make the best pizza in the world. The same can be said for their pasta, and if you ask any of them, they’d probably vouch that they host the best motocross races in the world, too. Which is arguably true given Italy is home to our very own eight-time FIM Motocross World Champion Antonio Cairoli and every round of MXGP to have ever been hosted on Italian soil has seen thousands upon thousands of loyal and passionate fans flock to the venues ready to witness the best off-road motorsport series in the world, the FIM Motocross World Championship.

While the province of Trentino is so stunning and typically tranquil as the Dolomite mountains shadow the circuit, which lies in close proximity to Lake Garda, Pietramurata is going to be shaken up this weekend by the epicness that is bound to unfold for MXGP round four.

Also joining in on the bar bashing action, the first rounds of the European Championship EMX250, EMX125 and EMX150 will kick off, which is going to be something special indeed with both premier amateur classes EMX250 and EMX125 both full at 100 entries.

The plot is starting to thicken! As we head into this weekend there is still so much hype surrounding the multi-time American champ Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Ryan Villopoto and this weekend’s home rider, the defending MXGP champion Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli. While bench racers continue to place their chips on these two, it just makes the victories sweeter for likes of Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Clement Desalle and Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl who have both proved to be solid threats for this seasons crown.

Starting with Desalle, as the MXGP championship leader, the Belgian bagged his first twenty-fiver at the last round in Argentina but is still looking for an overall victory. His momentum is solid at the moment; he is super positive and is riding fast and flawless.

Max Nagl is almost in the same boat. While the Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna Factory rider had an off round in Thailand we can’t forget he annihilated everyone at the season opener in Qatar and just authenticated his pace with his second grand prix overall in Argentina. Last year, here in Pietramurata, the German was also looking solid and managed to take home an impressive fourth overall.

Speaking of impressive, Team HRC’s Gautier Paulin’s performance at this circuit last year was incredible. A lot of GP21 fans are waiting to see the extremely flamboyant Frenchman stand on the box this year and given his speed last year, this might be his weekend.

And then there are the names on everybody’s lips, Ryan Villopoto and Antonio Cairoli. Starting with RV, it is going to be interesting to see how he handles his first European round of MXGP especially with the majority of the crowd rooting for Tony. We don’t doubt Ryan’s ability to adjust and take the bull by the horns; he has proven it at the last few rounds, not to mention on the occasions in which he has raced for team USA at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations. If the Kawasaki rider can challenge for the victory this weekend the atmosphere is going to be out of this world electric.

As for Tony, he has gone on record to say that the circuit here in Pietramurata is not one of his favorites, but what makes Tony such a great rider is he can accept bad days and just move forward. Although Tony has said this, we also know he loves his fans and he will do everything in his power to make them proud, therefore if Tony can win this weekend, it will not only be his first MXGP overall since MXGP of Belgium 2014, but it will be a special moment for everyone who has come out to cheer for the fun loving Italian.

In other awesome MXGP relative news, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tommy Searle has published on his social networks that he will make his return this weekend at MXGP of Trentino.

Pietramurata could be a circuit that suits the MX2 grand prix of Patagonia Argentina winner Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing’s Dylan Ferrandis. Being French, he is sure to have grown up on hard-pack circuits with plenty of elevation and it will be a treat for the spectators to see someone challenge The Bullet, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings.

Meanwhile Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s young gun Pauls Jonass will be looking to rip yet another podium while his teammate Jeffrey will undoubtedly be lining up with a 1-1 on his mind.

We can also look forward to the return of Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jordi Tixier who will definitely want to bounce back with a vengeance and celebrate with a bottle of bubbles, while it could be safe to say Standing Construct Yamaha Yamalube’s Valentin Guillod will be the one to watch as last years fair and square qualifying heat winner which he backed up with a solid 4 – 4 for fourth overall despite a few mistakes.

Fellow Standing Construct Yamaha Yamalube rider Julien Lieber can always be classed as a dark horse if he can keep the bike on two wheels while Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe’s Jeremy Seewer will want another taste of life on the box.
