Defending Champions Gajser and Vialle rule in Orlyonok

ORLYONOK (Krasnodar) 13 June 2021 – It was an exciting start to the 2021 season of the FIM Motocross World Championship, as defending MXGP and MX2 World Champion’s Tim Gajser of Team HRC and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle picked up right where they left off, going 1-1 to take victories in their respective classes, ahead of a field stacked full of fast riders.

In MXGP, Team HRC’s Gajser went on to prove that he is a two-time MXGP World Champion for a reason, as he took control of the opening race, leading the way from start to finish and eventually winning with a by 16.794 seconds over Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre and Antonio Cairoli of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing who placed third.

Though it was Jorge Prado of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing who grabbed the first Fox Holeshot of the season, before Gajser was able to slip into the lead, with Prado being pushed to second ahead of Cairoli.

Just a couple of laps later the Spaniard made a mistake and went down, to re-join down the field in 22nd leaving him with a lot of work in order to get back up with the leaders.

Gajser then led Cairoli, Febvre and Alessandro Lupino of MRT Racing Team, with the Italian getting off to a great start in the race. He later came under immense pressure from Jeffrey Herlings of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing and was able to keep him behind for the majority of the race (14 laps) before the Dutchman was able to fight his way through into 4th, where he eventually finished the race.

Following his crash on lap two, Prado was eventually to get back up to 9th, with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen having a good ride on his first MXGP outing to finish the race in 10th.

Swiss Jeremy Seewer of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing had a good ride to finish the race in 6th after spending much of the racing keeping up with Herlings and Lupino.

In race two it was Herlings who took the Fox Holeshot that time around and led Cairoli, Pauls Jonass of Standing Construct GasGas Factory Racing and Febvre, while Gajser and Prado got caught in some start drama which saw both riders pushed wide in the first corner. This left Gajser down outside the top 20, which meant he had to work hard to get back up to the front.

Herlings’ lead didn’t last for long, as he had a small crash letting Cairoli, Jonass and Febvre through, re-joining the race ahead of Seewer who was in 5th place. Further down the order, Gajser wasted no time at all as by lap 5 he was already up into P3, making passes on Olsen, Seewer, Lupino and more. A lap later he also made a move on Herlings, taking an inside line for P2.

There was a bit of drama for Febvre, with the Frenchman hitting the back of Jonass as he pushed to pass him, which left him on the side of the track. This mistake was costly, though by the end of the race the Frenchman was able to make some good passes to get back up into 6th from 15th.

At the top of the field Cairoli still led the way keeping a good pace that saw him set a few fastest laps of the race. Gajser was catching quick and by lap 12 was the new race leader. Cairoli was keen to challenge Gajser but had an unfortunate crash which left his bike too bent up to finish, despite the 9-time world champions best effort.

In the end it was Gajser, Herlings, Jonass, Lupino and Seewer the top 5 of the second MXGP race!

Picking up right where he left off from the 2019 MXGP of Russia, Gajser stood on the top step of the podium in Orlyonok once again to take the overall victory and the red plate, with Herlings second and Febvre finishing third overall.

Tim Gajser: “I’m really happy to be back racing, it’s been a long period without races. In the first race I took a good start and my riding was good. In the second one, again my jump out of the gate was good and then someone from the inside pushed us completely off the track, I even jumped off the bike. I then searched for some lines for the first couple of laps and tried to make as many passes as possible and managed to get to Tony [Cairoli], then took a couple of laps to see what he was doing and then I made a pass for the win, so I’m happy”.

“Defending the title is always the same pressure but I try to put that to the side. It’s a new season, everybody is starting from zero and I just need to stay consistent, be smart as it’s a long season. I’m looking forward to Matterley Basin, it’s one of the best tracks and I’m really looking forward to racing there in two weeks’ time”.

Jeffrey Herlings: “I started the day with P1 in time practice. In the first race I had a bad start, I was fourth or something and was struggling with the guys in front, managed to finish fourth which was decent, not good but decent and then in the second race I had a really good start and was leading. Then I made a small mistake, crashed and lost a few places, then worked my way to third then Tim passed me and I was back in fourth. I then passed Pauls [Jonass] for third. I felt a little off the pace, obviously I had a bit of luck with Tony [ Cairoli] going down which I feel sorry for him but managed to finish second and second overall, so it was a decent day, I mean I haven’t race GP’s for 9 months, my fitness is not there yet but I just need to get back in the groove”.

“It’s a big improvement, obviously it’s [the foot] not like new, but I don’t have any pain”.

Romain Febvre: “I had a good start in both races but the second could have been better, but I managed to get into third really soon, I saw that I was faster than the other riders but I kind of took my time to look for some lines and Pauls Jonass was in front, he was riding securing the inside line everywhere and at one point I was really close to him, at the last moment he cut his line and went for the inside line and I was there so he took my front wheel and I ended up in the fence. Managed to get the bike and when I stood up I crashed again, so I lost about 20 seconds. I managed to come back to sixth so it’s pretty good, I didn’t think I was on the podium on the last lap, it’s on your bad days that you can fight for the championship, so I’m really happy to finish sixth in the second race and third overall”.

“I struggled with my injury that happened in 2019 but now it’s all good, I feel really good at the moment, my physical condition is pretty good, I’m really calm and I feel I can go fast, so I just need a couple of more races to get into the race condition”.

In MX2, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle made it clear that the pressure of being a defending world champion did not disturb him in the slightest as he cruised around in both races to go 1-1 and secure the red plate at the opening round here in Orlyonok.

Vialle got off to a great start in race one, followed by Honda 114 Motorsport’s Ruben Fernandez and F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Mathys Boisrame and Roan Van De Moosdijk. Last year’s Vice World Champion, Jago Geerts of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing and his teammate Maxime Renaux didn’t get off to the best starts as they were down in 16th and 9th.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Rene Hofer then got himself into 4th, with Renaux catching up on to the back of Jed Beaton of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing and Jan Pancar of KTM Racestore MX2.

Boisrame then got himself back into 4th with a block pass on Hofer on lap 8 to sit behind his teammate van de Moosdijk who was ahead in P3. Van de Moosdijk was on a charge as he clocked some fast laps looking to get close to Fernandez for P2, though ultimately settled for third.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s newest addition Mattia Guadagnini had a strong first race finishing 9th. On lap 13 the Italian was even faster than his teammate and race leader Vialle, which only gave an indication of what he is capable of and what can be expected for the upcoming GP’s.

Vialle though was the race winner, with Fernandez securing his best MX2 result to finish second and Moosdijk crossing the line in third.

The second race saw a different KTM rider taking the Fox Holeshot, as Rene Hofer beat the rest of the field to the first turn. Though it only took a few moments before Vialle was up front with Fernandez on his tail. The pair had a close battle with Fernandez having a brief moment in the lead, though it was Vialle who led the way from then on.

Stephen Rubini of Team Honda Racing Assomotor got off to a good start in 4th position in the second race, though unfortunately did not finish the heat. Renaux also didn’t get the best start and was left having to fight back from 26th.

Boisrame and van de Moosdijk once again got a good jump out of the gate with both riders inside the top 5, with Boisrame pushing to pass Rubini. After Rubini came Fernandez, with Fernandez focused on his own battle with Hofer. By lap 15 Boisrame was able to get around both to secure 2nd place behind Vialle who already held too much of a gap for the Kawasaki rider to challenge him for the win.

Fernandez was keen not to let his earlier mistakes in the race cost him a podium and we were treated to a close battle between him and Hofer, with the pair making contact as Fernandez moved into P3, while Hofer was left to pick up his bike. The Austrian finished the race in 4th.

In the end it was Vialle who was the race winner with Boisrame finishing just 2.569 seconds behind him and Fernandez in 3rd position. In terms of the podium, Vialle started his season in the best way possible with a GP win and the red plate, taking the championship lead to Matterley Basin, while Fernandez took his first MX2 podium, occupying the second place step, while Boisrame finished third.

Tom Vialle: “I had a really good day and I’m really happy with both races. This morning I couldn’t do any better than 9th position in time practice but in the races I had two good starts, leading both races, it was a good weekend and I’m really happy because I’ve been working really hard in the winter. We have been working on the bike also with KTM, so everything was good and I’m really looking forward to going to England and ride again there”.

“My goal is to win at the end of the championship, so the goal was to be consistent like I was last year and it was working pretty good today”.

Ruben Fernandez: “I’m really happy, it’s my first ever podium. I had two good races, I had good starts. In the first one I tried to battle with Tom Vialle from the first laps but I started to make a few mistakes and had to take my own pace. I tried to make no more mistakes. The second race, I managed to get into first and had a good battle with Tom, later I made two mistakes in the same corner, then I struggled with my rhythm, got passed and then on the last lap I had to go for the pass on Rene for the second place on the podium, so I took my last chance. I’m really happy about the race”.

“I can say I’m really happy. We [the team] have been putting in some work, overall the team is good, I’m really happy with the new bike”.

Mathys Boisrame: “I’m really happy for sure to be on the podium. In the first race I made a mistake, but my riding was good. In the second race my start was not so good, the first few laps I was maybe 7th. I managed to come back, my rhythm was good and I finished second, it was a good race and a good weekend for me to start like that”

“Matterley is a good track, a lot of ruts and also a lot of bumps, I like a track like that, but we need to work a lot and keep going, but we see, there is a new race and a new day so we will work a lot and we will see. I’d like to thank my team and everyone who supports me”.

Orlyonok welcomes MXGP for the MXGP of Russia

ORLYONOK (Krasnodar) 12 June 2021 – MXGP is ready for race action, following a day full of festivities that welcomed the FIM Motocross World Championship to Orlyonok, as MXGP of Russia kicks off the 2021 season with a bang.

Today’s activities started this morning with the Opening Press Conference where Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo, FIM President Jorge Viegas and the Organizer of the MXGP of Russia and MFR President Federation Alexander Dzheus welcomed everybody to the Orlyonok circuit for the opening round of 2021. The press conference started with a presentation video showing some of the best moments from the 2020 season and also looked at some of the statistics of the previous season, showcasing the success of MXGP on social media and TV Coverage and the numbers reached with the MXGP Magazine as well as MXGP.com and MXGP-TV!

Infront Moto Racing CEO, David Luongo: "It’s fantastic for us to be back after all those months. I think when everybody looked at the calendar it was very challenging for us again to make the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship. I just want to say a few words on last year because it’s important to remind everybody how difficult the year was for all of us, the teams, the riders, the federations and the promotor and during such a time it was very important for us to be there and to guarantee that the championship would be possible, it was our mission last season to deliver the best championship possible and at the end we managed to do it and we crowned two fantastic champions. I would like to thank you for all your help last year and I hope we can manage to have a great season again this year. So, we are here in Krasnodar for the opening of the MXGP World Championship, it’s very good to be here again and I have to say that we are always very welcome as the support for the GP is fantastic here. Yesterday we were present with FIM President Jorge Viegas and Aleksander Dzheus we were welcomed by the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia to make a plan to develop motocross in Russia. For us it is also something very important to have such support from the authorities to develop the sport. For the rest of the season, I think everybody saw that it will be a challenging one, we are adapting still to the situation but I’m sure we can deliver a great season. I really want to thank all of you that you are here and you continue to help us to deliver the best motocross series in the world – the media, the teams, the riders, the team managers, the partners, everybody that has been linked with us through this difficult time. I wish to thank the FIM because after all the challenges that we had the last months, they were always with us and there to help us through all our decisions and in a difficult time this is very important. To all the riders, I wish you all a great and safe season and for sure we’ll deliver a fantastic championship. Thank you and good luck!"

FIM President, Jorge Viegas: "It’s a pleasure for me to be in Orlyonok for many reasons. Russia is the country of motocross; the first time I saw a Motocross Grand Prix was in ’72 and the winner was the great Russian champion Moisseev. As David Luongo said we stick together and we’re working to find the best solution so I’m sure the 2021 season will be very successful. Last year it was really difficult for everybody but at the end the result was great after all, and I hope we can all be together at the FIM Gala at the end of the year in Monte Carlo where we’ll have prize giving of World Champions of 2020 and 2021. Finally, I can only wish to Infront Moto Racing that everything will be smooth, and they’ll be able to do the 19 races planned. For sure FIM will be side by side with Infront to support each other to support them. Thank you very much".

President of the MFR and Organizer of the MXGP of Russia Alexander Dzheus: "We are happy to welcome David Luongo and Jorge Viegas and also it is a huge privilege and a big responsibility for us to host the opening round of the FIM Motocross World Championship. We have tried to organise everything in the best way possible and we ensured that everything goes as smoothly as possible.  We are in discussion with the government and the local authorities, along with the FIM and Infront Moto Racing, to develop the motorcycling sport in Russia, it is very important for us to host the MXGP and it is our intention to host the Junior Motocross World Championship in the future. I am a rider and a fan of motocross and I would like to say how much we appreciate the trust to open the season in Orlyonok, we are ready to do everything we can to make it amazing! Thank you very much."

Following the press conference, the usual FIM briefing took place with the Team Managers of the World Championship teams, to go through the rules and regulations for the upcoming season.

Then it was time for the special edition of the Studio Show LIVE with Paul Malin and 16 guests, which included Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle, Jeffrey Herlings, Antonio Cairoli and Jorge Prado, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP’s Jeremy Seewer and Glenn Coldenhoff, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MX2’s Jago Geerts and Thibault Benistant, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jed Beaton, Standing Construct GasGas Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass, SDMCORSE’s Jeremy Van Horebeek, DIGA PROCROSS GASGAS FACTORY RACING’s Isak Gifting and F&H Racing Team’s Roan Van De Moosdijk – which was broadcasted on MXGP-TV.com and MXGP’s Facebook page.

The day continued with the annual family photo, as the MXGP and MX2 riders gathered onto the start line for the occasion together with MXGP and FIM representatives. It was also the first chance for everyone to be back together after the off-season break.

The event was then finished off with a colourful opening ceremony, featuring traditional dance performances by Orlyonok children’s centre along with a special welcome where the officials on stage Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo, FIM President Jorge Viegas and the Organizer of the MXGP of Russia and MFR President Federation Alexander Dzheus took part to a typical moment called ‘Bread & Salt’. The ceremony moved on to a warm speech by the officials and a photo opportunity at the end with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini, Team Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing’s Brent Van doninck, Calvin Vlaanderen and Kevin Strijbos, WZ-Racing’s Bastian Bogh Damm and local hero JWR HONDA RACING’s Vsevolod Brylyakov.

MXGP returns this weekend in Russia!

ORLYONOK (Russia) 9 June 2021 – Finally, the wait is over and the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship is set to begin this weekend in the beautiful seaside location of Orlyonok for the MXGP of Russia!

After missing out on a Grand Prix in Russia last season due to COVID-19, MXGP will return to the hilly hardpack circuit for the first time since 2019, which will also be the fourth time that the FIM Motocross World Champion will take place in Orlyonok.

Located in southern Russia, close to the Black Sea, the Orlyonok circuit first hosted a World Championship Grand Prix race back in 2017, having successfully held the FIM Motocross Junior World Championship in 2016.

Back in 2017, Clement Desalle and Pauls Jonass were the first riders in MXGP and MX2 to win at the newly introduced track, with the pair still holding the record for the most GP wins at the Russian circuit, with two victories each. Though with Desalle retired from the Motocross World Championship, this gives Tim Gajser, the winner of the Russian Grand Prix in 2019 a chance to equal the Belgian’s record – but of course with Jonass now in MXGP and back to full health, we could see the Latvian make the perfect comeback to GP racing with a third win.

Last time MXGP was held in Russia was back in 2019 that saw Gajser and Jorge Prado dominate the field with the pair winning both races to take a secure GP victory each. But with Prado moving up to the premier class last season, this now leaves the door open for a brand-new MX2 winner in Orlyonok.

In MXGP, there is no doubt that Team HRC’s Tim Gajser will look for a strong start to his 2021 campaign as he defends the MXGP title for the second consecutive year. Though he’s got quite a field of riders up for the challenge with Jeffrey Herlings of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing making his return to racing following last season’s injury, along with fellow KTM factory rider, Antonio Cairoli looking to make a good start on his 10th world title chase.

Of course, there’s also Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer who last time around finished third on the podium and was last year’s runner up in the MXGP World Championship standings. Arnaud Tonus from the new Hostletter Yamaha Racing Team will also look for another podium finish in Russia, after finishing second in 2019.

And there’s also the two rookies, Thomas Kjer Olsen of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing and Ben Watson from Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing to consider, with both riders having both been on the podium in Russia before during their MX2 careers, with Olsen finishing third in 2019 and Watson on the third step as well in 2018.

You can’t forget Pauls Jonass of course who currently matches Clement Desalle’s record for the most wins at the hilly circuit, with a GP win in 2017 and 2019 while he was in MX2. A win or a podium could be the perfect comeback for the Latvian who will line-up in Russia with his new team, Standing Construct GasGas MXGP.

Additionally, we have Romain Febvre and Ivo Monticelli from Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team who will be looking to impress at the opening round this weekend. For Monticelli this will be one of his first outings with his new team, so no doubt he will be keen to put on a solid performance.

The 2021 season will also welcome a new team and manufacturer to the roster, with SDM Corse Beta Racing Team making their World Championship debut with Jeremy Van Horebeek and Jimmy Clochet.

Italian Alberto Forato of SM Action Racing Team will make his season debut in MXGP, with the GasGas rider making the decision to move up to the 450cc class during the off-season.

Unfortunately, Arminas Jasikonis of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing and Team HRC’s Mitch Evans will not line up in Orlyonok as they continue to gain their strength back after injury.

  1. Tim Gajser                  50pts
  2. Arnaud Tonus             44pts
  3. Jeremy Seewer           36pts

In MX2 things are bound to be interesting with plenty of new faces make the move up the 250cc category.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle will return to defend his MX2 World Title from last season, meanwhile Jago Geerts of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing will be keen to start the season strong without repeating his mistakes of last season.

But the pair will come under new challengers, with Maxime Renaux looking like one of the main protagonists for the title this season as he joins Geerts in the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing squad. Renaux has proven that he can ride very well on hardpack circuits, so Orlyonok should be a good fit for him.

Of course, there’s also his teammate Thibault Benistant, last year’s EMX250 Champion, who will make his season debut in Russia and will be keen to make an impression, like his ride during the MXGP of Pietramurata last year where he finished third in the second race. Additionally, we have Mattia Guadagnini, EXM250 runner-up, also joining the MX2 class for 2021 as part of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team, which is a big move for the young Italian.

Others to look out for in Russia include F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Mathys Boisrame, Roan Van De Moosdijk and Mikkel Haarup, with all three possible podium contenders, especially Boisrame who has always been a strong hardpack rider and van de Moosdijk who was victorious in Orlyonok back in 2019, the same season he won the EMX250 Championship.

For Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory’s Jed Beaton the 2021 season will be his last opportunity to go for top positions in MX2, as the age rule in the 250cc category will mean he will need to move up at the end of the year. Nonetheless Beaton had some strong results in 2020 and will no doubt go for more podium positions this time around. While his young teammate Kay De Wolf will make his season debut with the ‘big boys’ in MX2 after moving up from the EMX250 class, where he often challenged for top positions.

2019 MXGP of Russia Top 3:

  1. Jorge Prado                50pts
  2. Thomas Kjer Olsen     44pts
  3. Jago Geerts                 40pts
