HOW TO WATCH THE MXGP OF LOMMEL

LOMMEL (Belgium) 23 October 2020 – MXGP is ready for the third and final instalment of the FIM Motocross World Championship’ run in Belgium, with the MXGP of Lommel!

The final race of the Belgian triple-header will see some more changes being made to the already transformed circuit here in Lommel, as sectors three and four will be the main focus of the modifications.

These changes should make for some more interesting racing in MXGP and MX2, as well as the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing category which will see its final round of the series as Fantic Racing’s Andrea Bonacorsi pushes to secure the title!

In MXGP, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser is now 55 points ahead of his closest rival, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider, Antonio Cairoli and Jorge Prado who is a further two points back! Things are getting exciting as Prado will push for another overall victory in the sand in order to edge closer to the title chase.

While in MX2, after losing some ground, home hero, Jago Geerts of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing will no doubt be pushing for a consistent day as he chases more races wins to whittle away at the 61 point gap between him and the series leader Tom Vialle of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

Belgian fans can watch their favourite riders in action over the weekend and see the MXGP races unfold via Telenet on the Playsport 1 channel, who have already been following the entire season so far and will continue to bring coverage of the upcoming events as we close the 2020 season!

Additionally, there will be local and national TV stations onsite in Lommel, including RTBF, RTV and TVL, while a special review of the races will also be available on TV VRT in Belgium, as the channel will offer a 20 min highlights re-cap of all the action from the last GP here in Lommel and of course the remainder of the season too!

This weekend the races will be starting at a slightly different time, due to the fact that the clocks will go back one hour, as we enter wintertime. As always though, fans can follow the races LIVE throughout the weekend, all you need to do is log onto MXGP-TV.com this Saturday and Sunday!

Three times the charm as the FIM Motocross World Championship continues in Belgium with the MXGP of Lommel this weekend

LOMMEL (Belgium) 22 October 2020 – The FIM Motocross World Championship is back for the last Grand Prix of the Belgian triple-header, as the series carries momentum into the 15th round with the MXGP of Lommel!

At the beginning of our Belgian run, the riders were treated to a brand-new track layout of the popular sand circuit, which many of the top riders have gotten to know very well over the years, due to the fact that many of the teams are based in Lommel or close by. This weekend the track will undergo further changes to present the riders with new challenges!

The main changes will be focused on sectors three and four, giving the track a different look which will make for some interesting racing.

Heading into the last GP of the Belgian trio of races, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado will no doubt be chasing his fourth overall victory of the season, having won at the previous GP here in Lommel.

The Spaniard has been looking extremely strong in the second half of this season, and now is just two points down on his teammate, Antonio Cairoli, for second in the championship. Though Cairoli won’t make it easy for him, as he was looking more comfortable during yesterday’s races while he challenged Prado for the race win in the second heat.

For the series leader, Tim Gajser of Team HRC, the focus will be on enjoying the races and that overall victory, which he unfortunately missed out on yesterday, due to a mistake in the second race while he led the way. He finished second, though still managed to extend his championship lead to 55 points, which gives him more breathing room for the next few races.

The Slovenian is enjoying his time in the sand, which he confirmed himself during yesterday’s post-race press conference. For Gajser, a few silly mistakes are what’s costing him a solid and consistent results, as he’s won two out of the four races here in Lommel so far. But more can be expected from the defending champion as he will be pushing for the perfect 1-1 scorecard to get back on top of the box this weekend.

Dutch rider, Brian Bogers of Marchetti Racing Team KTM has been looking strong the last two GPs as he has finished consistently 6th overall, which is his best result in MXGP since he made the move up in 2019. Bogers started the races on pole after dominating the time practice session and then finished the race 7-5 for 6th overall.

Now with the final race here in Belgium, it would be good to see him continue his battle at the top end of the field and maybe even het himself on the podium once again, since his last was in Russia 2017, back when he was in MX2.

Calvin Vlaanderen of Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing had two solid top 10 results yesterday, as he finished the races in 6th and 9th which gave him 7th overall, putting him among some of the top names in the series, during his rookie season.

Then there’s Romain Febvre of Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team and Jeremy Seewer of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing who both have pushed hard in the last two GPs to edge closer to a podium finish.  Febvre was tied on points with Cairoli for the podium (38 points), though he crashed in the later stages of the second race, which cost him valuable points and a spot on the podium. But there is no doubt that the Frenchman will regroup and come back fighting for the next races.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle will enter the last Belgian GP with confidence as he will look to make it 3 out of 3 wins here in Lommel, after winning the last two GPs. The Frenchman has been pretty consistent, with two race wins and two second place finishes so far. He has been riding well not making any big mistakes which have paid off massively as he now leads the championship by 61 points, over Jago Geerts of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing, who has lost some ground during the last few races.

For Geerts, the previous GP was a mixture, as he crashed in both races while in the lead. In the first race he was able to make an impressive recovery and get back to the top, though in the second race he couldn’t do the same and finished 7th which put him third on the podium and lost some valuable championship points.

His teammate, Ben Watson has been on a high recently as he claimed two consecutive podiums in Lommel so far. The Brit has been looking very strong, with his starts being the only downfall, especially in the races yesterday, as he had to fight back in both heats.

He clearly has the speed, as he proved it, especially in the second race as he caught up with the leaders after starting outside the top 5. His pass on F&H Kawasaki’s Roan Van de Moosdijk was also impressive and showed that the Yamaha rider was not looking to mess around. Watson was third during the Monster Energy MXGP of Flanders, then second overall during the MXGP of Limburg, so it will be interesting to see if he can secure an overall victory this time around.

Roan Van de Moosdijk had a tough start to the races yesterday, as he was pushing well inside the top 3 when his bike stopped which forced him out of the race and cost him the chance of going after the podium, which we would have had a good go at, as he finished the second race third.

Diga Procross GasGas Factory Juniors rider Isak Gifting had some more positive results at the previous GP, as he finished 4th overall and just 7 points from his first MX2 podium.

In MX2, it was Jago Geerts of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing who was the fastest out of the 250cc riders, as he set a best lap of the GP during the second MX2 race, lap two, as he chased F&H Kawasaki’s Roan Van de Moosdijk for the lead.

Prado and Vialle top the podium at the MXGP of Limburg in Belgium

LOMMEL (Belgium) 21 October 2020 – The 14th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship saw Jorge Prado and Tom Vialle of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing sweep the podium at the MXGP of Limburg, as the pair took a 2-1 result in MXGP and MX2 to confirm their spot on the top of the box in Lommel, Belgium.

The races today were met with all the elements, including rain, sunshine and wind which made for even more challenging conditions, as the MXGP and MX2 riders battled it out for top positions in the deep sand of Lommel.

Jorge Prado made his eight-podium appearance during the MXGP of Limburg today after some close battles in both races, where he finished second and first to secure his first GP overall in Lommel, in the premier class.

After running off track and taking some time to get going again in race two, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, had to settle for third in the second heat, after a race win in the opening race, which gave him second overall today, as the Slovenian continued to show impressive form in the sand.

While, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli made his return to the podium, since Mantova, as a fifth and a second in the races was enough to put him on the third step of the podium, an improvement from the previous round here in Belgium.

In the first race, it was Prado who claimed the Fox Holeshot, as he led Gajser, Romain Febvre of Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team, then followed by Jeremy Seewer from Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing and Marchetti Racing Team KTM’s Brian Bogers, who continue his impressive form, after setting the fastest lap in timed practice.

Prado then continued to lead Gajser and Febvre, with the Frenchman looking to close in on the pair ahead. Gajser then made a mistake and was lucky to keep it on two wheels, though in the process lost second place to Febvre.

Febvre then bettered his previously set fastest lap of the race, as he got within 1.980 seconds to Prado and continued to work away at the gap as he closed in on the leader.

Home rider, Jeremy Van Horebeek of Honda SR Motoblouz then crashed out of sixth place, and was able to re-group in 16th, though he eventually came home in 11th position.

Febvre then lost second to Gajser on lap five, as Seewer continued to fend off a hard charging Bogers. The Swiss then managed to break free of the Marchetti KTM rider, and even had Febvre in his sights for a top three finish.

Prado then led the way by 3.399, though by the following lap the gap was down to 2.028 and then he was on the rear wheel of the Spaniard. All while, Bogers lost fifth to Cairoli.

And with a few laps to go, Gajser took the lead away from Prado and opened up a 2.129 second gap. At the same time Seewer had caught onto the back of Febvre, though was not able to find a way through and in the end had to settle for fourth.

With a lap to go, the gap was just 1.376 between the factory Honda and KTM riders, though in the end it was Gajser who claimed the opening race win, while Prado crossed the line in second and Febvre third.

In race two, Prado got another flying start, behind him though was Cairoli, Gajser and Seewer. And Gajser wasted no time to get himself up into second and then into the lead on lap 5. Cairoli was also looking to do the same, as he pushed to get around his teammate.

Seewer then made a mistake and fell down to sixth in the race, as Febvre charged to get around Bogers for P4.

Gajser didn’t lead for long as by the next lap, the Team HRC rider found himself off track, and took some time to get going again. The Slovenian re-joined the race in 7th.

Prado was the new race leader, as he led the 9-time world champion, Cairoli, by 1.065 seconds with 11 minutes on the clock. The two then battled closely together with one another until the end of the race, as Cairoli briefly was able to pass into the lead, though the Spaniard was able to respond quickly on each occasion.

Febvre then started to close in on the pair, and while pushing to get closer, made a small mistake and went down. Meanwhile, Gajser was down in 6th and closing in on Seewer, who made a small error, which allowed the championship leader inside the top 5.

In the end it was Prado who was the winner, with Cairoli second and Gajser third.

Gajser now leads the championship by 55 points, as we head into round 15 of the FIM Motocross World Championship this weekend, for the final race here in Lommel.

Jorge Prado: “In the first race I had a really good start but after Tim passed, I tried to follow him, but he was too fast. I almost crashed and I couldn’t do anything else. In the second race, again, I took a really good start and I was feeling really good on the bike, so I went ahead. I had a nice battle with Tony, he passed me, and I passed him back, so I gave all myself. Even the guys behind me were a little bit faster than me but I was able to keep the position and I got the overall victory. I’m really happy, now it’s time to recover and be ready for the next race”

Tim Gajser: “I’m quite happy, the pace and the riding was really good in the first race and as well in the second race until I made that mistake. I didn’t even crash, I just got off track, I got stuck with bike and I took like 20 second to pull out the bike from that situation. I needed one lap to recover and regroup and to get the speed back again. I was able to pass the guys in front of me and finish 3rd. I’m really looking forward to the next race, it’s weird to say but I’m really enjoying riding on the sand again”.

Antonio Cairoli: “I’m happy about today.  Last week I wasn’t me riding; everybody knows that I’m able to ride in the sand properly, even today it was not my best sand riding but anyway was quite ok. I really enjoyed today, especially the second race even if I made a small mistake at the beginning and I was outside of the track. In the end I was pushing hard and I chased Jorge and once I passed him I struggled because I had to clean my lenses with my hand and behind me I had Febvre that was pushing a lot so I had to be super focused. Jorge was riding really good and he deserved the overall victory. I’m looking forward to next GP, we made some changes on the bike and I think we can even improve more with some other changes and push to be on the first step of the podium”.

In the MX2 category, Tom Vialle of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing claimed his second consecutive overall win here in Lommel, with a second and a race win, as he extended his championship lead to a comfortable 61 points over his closest rival, Jago Geerts of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing.

Meanwhile Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori J1 Racing’s Maxime Renaux still occupies third in the standings with 438 points, as Jed Beaton of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing is just a further nine points back in fourth.

It was a great day for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MX2 squad who claimed another double podium, as Ben Watson occupied the second step on the box, after some impressive racing that saw him fight back from down the order to top point scoring positions, as he finished the races 3-2.

Third was his teammate and home GP rider, Geerts, who had a mixture of a day, after a couple of big crashes made things that much more difficult for the factory Yamaha rider, as he continued to chase an overall victory on home soil.

In the opening race, the Fox Holeshot went to Michael Sandner of Diga Procross GasGas Factory Juniors. The GasGas rider led Geerts, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen, though F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Roan Van de Moosdijk wasted no time to slip into third place within a couple of corners.

The second factory Husqvarna rider, Jed Beaton, had a tough start to the race, as he picked himself up and got going on quite far behind on the rest of the field. Though he was able to get his head down and fight through up to 10th which is where he finished.

His teammate, Olsen, also went down in the opening few laps and was outside the top 20 too.

Geerts then set his best lap of the race, as he extended his lead over Vialle to 1.679 seconds and the gap between the pair remained tight for quite some time. The championship contenders were closely followed by van de Moosdijk, who pushed to stay with them and even gain some ground to go after the win. And as he edged closer, a bike issue forced him out of the opening race.

Geerts then went out of the lead, as he had an awkward crash, which gave a clear way for Vialle to lead the race. Meanwhile, Watson battled his way back up the order, after a poor start and was all over Ruben Fernandez of SDM Corse Yamaha for fourth place. After several attempts, the Brit was able to make a pass stick, though he then had quite the gap to go after Rubini. All while Vialle led the way by 12.121 seconds.

Watson then started to take a load of time out of Stephen Rubini of Honda Racing Assomotor who was having a great rider in 3rd place.

The gap between second and first then started to come down drastically, as Geerts was taking a load of time out of Vialle every lap until he was on his rear wheel. The two then had a few brief moments of running alongside one another, though with three laps to go, the #193 was finally able to claim back P1.

Watson also passed Rubini for 3rd, with the Honda rider coming under further pressure and losing out two more spots to Fernandez and Isak Gifting of Diga Procross GasGas Factory Juniors.

In the end it was Geerts who claimed the win, with Vialle second and Watson third.

In race two, it was Geerts who got the Fox Holeshot as he led Van de Moosdijk, Gifting and Vialle. Though Van de Moosdijk was not about to sit around, as he quickly moved into the lead, while Vialle passed Gifting for third on the opening lap.

Geerts then had to work hard for eight laps to get around Van de Moosdijk as the Kawasaki rider put up a good fight. But as Geerts got into P1, he had a big crash and was stuck under his bike for a few moments, which cost him valuable time as he was only able to re-group in 7th.

Watson then made his way back up once again and eventually caught onto the back of Maxime Renaux of Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori J1 Racing and by lap 11 was able to pass the Frenchman for third as Gifting also lost a couple of positions after making a slip-up.

There was then 3.483 seconds separating Watson from second place, as he only had 4 laps to get closer to Van de Moosdijk for a few more points. Two laps later, the Brit was all over the back of the Dutchman and with a single lap to go was able to move into second after an incredible effort.

Though it was Vialle who won the race, as he crossed the finish line in first, with Watson second and Van de Moosdijk third. Geerts could not manage to pick up anymore positions and finished the race in 7th which was costly to his championship chase.

Tom Vialle: “I’m really happy about the result of today. In the first race I did one mistake and Jago was really fast. In the second race I took a good start and me and Jago we pushed a little bit outside, like this Roan was able to go inside and I was third. After that Jago made a mistake and I took the chance, I was able to go ahead and make my own rhythm to win. I’m really happy about this win and to be here again”.

Ben Watson: “I’m really happy, being again on the podium is a really good feeling. I didn’t have such a good start, so I had to push a lot but I’m really happy because I was able to pass a lot of riders. In the second race I almost crashed on the waves and I lost my rhythm and after I had to fight with Roan. We are not quite at the end yet as we still have four races to go and a lot couple happen, and I want to enjoy these moments”.

Jago Geerts: “I’m ok but today was a strange day. I have mixed feelings. In the first race I was feeling really good and happy about the ride. In the second race I was following Roan and just after passing him I had a really bad crash and I still don’t know what happened and I was stuck under the bike and for sure I couldn’t reach what I was expecting”.

Benistant claims the title in the EMX250 class at the final round in Lommel!

LOMMEL (Belgium) 20 October 2020 – The European Championship have concluded another race day here in Lommel, Belgium, this time for the round of Limburg.

It was a special day for Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Thibault Benistant who clinched the EMX250 title in style with a race win in the second heat, and an overall victory. This gave the Frenchman the best opportunity to celebrate his gold plate on the top of the box as he claimed his sixth-round win of the season.

Meanwhile in the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing category, Andrea Bonacorsi of Fantic Racing edged closer to his maiden EMX title, as a race win helped him maintain a healthy 38-point advantage on David Braceras of RFM GasGas MX Junior Team, who celebrated his first overall podium victory with a 1-2 result, keeping the championship chase alive.

This season Thibalut Benistant showed great form, which all began at the Latvian triple-header, where the Frenchman swept the podium at all three rounds after he missed the podium in Valkenswaard by 1 point. His closest rival, and this year’s vice champion, Mattia Guadagnini of Husqvarna Junior Racing Maddii then responded with his own string of race wins and podiums in Mantova, as he won the rounds of Città di Mantova, Europe and then also the round of Spain.

The championship chase came down to the wire here in Lommel, with Benistant having the perfect day during the first round of Flanders, as he secured two strong race wins. Guadagnini was looking to respond and give it his best shot for today’s races though it didn’t work out. Despite winning the opening race, while having a close battle with the series leader, the second race was much different for the Italian, who crashed out of the race and did not score any points.

And while the focus was on who the winner will be this season, the third spot of the championship also opened up, after an unfortunate crash side-lined Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf, who was absent from the races today. The third-place medal ended up going to Hakon Fredriksen of Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori J1 Racing, who in the second half of the series was showing some strong results, finishing on the podium a total of five times, three of those times consecutively. During today’s races, the Norwegian put in an impressive performance, finishing the races in fourth and then second, which also put him on the second step of the box.

Though with Guadagnini unfortunately not scoring any points in the second race, this left another spot on the podium up for grabs. And it was Jorgen-Matthias Talviku who confirmed his second podium of the season, with a third and a seventh-place finish in the races, to also secure fifth in the championship this year, a brilliant position to build upon as he plans to enter the series once again in 2021.

Thibault Benistant: “Of course it’s amazing to win another European Title, all the season I tried to stay focus because I knew that you cannot win every race so I worked really hard with the team, with Yamaha and with everybody to get the best result every race and finally we did it and I’m really happy about that. Of course, I’m looking forward to next season and now I have some news goals. Going to the MX2 class and I need to be really focused on that.

Haakon Fredriksen: “I started the season only in Latvia because I wasn’t in Valkenswaard; I just worked hard all the season and once I got the possibility I took it. Today I’m happy about my riding, I got the third overall in the championship and I’m really satisfied about that. My favourite moment of the season was the race win in Mantova, I really enjoy that, and I had a special feeling”.

Jorgen-Matthias Talviku: “I’m really happy about today and I really enjoied the track, but today the first race for me has been quite tough so in the second one I pushed really hard to get this result and be on the podium 3rd today. I’m also really happy for the 5th place I get in the championship. For the new season I want to keep in the EMX250 Championship and I’ll work a lot in the wintertime and do everything I need to be ready and focus next year. I want to thank my manager, my team and my trainer, the Estonian federation and my family because it has been a fantastic year for me!”.

In the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing category, it was David Braceras of RFME GasGas MX Junior Team, who took the top step of the podium for the very first time this season and he did so with a second and a race win. For Braceras, this was his fifth podium of the year, and his second race victory, which also helped him keep the championship chase alive, as the Spaniard whittled down on the lead of Fantic Racing’s Andrea Bonacorsi who now heads into the final round on Saturday with a 38-point advantage.

In the first race, the Spaniard had to work hard to fend off the championship leader, for quite some time, and would eventually drop a position after eight laps, as Bonacorsi carried out with his charge for the win.

Bonacorsi finished second overall today, after a confident race win in the opening race, which saw him get a good start and work his way around Braceras for the victory. The Italian then struggled in the second heat with the start and finding his flow and would finish down in fifth. Despite that, it was his fifth podium of the year and he now has one hand on the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing title, as we head into the final round of the championship in four-day time.

Today’s podium saw a new face in the mix, as Haakon Osterhagen of Creymert Racing celebrated his first top three of the season. The Norwegian started well in the opening race, though eventually dropped to eight after a brief moment off track. The KTM rider was able to make up for it in the season heat though, where he really showed his skills in the sand to finish the race in second place.

There’s now just one round remaining, and the door for the championship is still open, as Braceras has a shot of going after the title. Third in the championship is Meico Vettik, who has two podium finishes under his belt. Though he cannot afford to relax as Pietro Razzini is just a further eight points adrift and could get himself a medal this season. He showed his strength today as he challenged for the win in the opening race, which he finished fourth. So in terms of the championship nothing is concrete and the next few races will be interesting.

David Braceras: “I still cannot believe it, I really worked hard with my team and the dream came true. The day started really good, I was fourth in the time practice and in the first race I took the holeshot. I was able to lead almost all the race when five minutes to the end Andrea did catch me and passed me and I finish second. In the second race I started second and I pushed really hard. I’m really happy to take the overall here in Lommel and I’m feeling really good for Saturday, but I don’t think about the Championship right now and I’m only focused on the races, we’ll see what will happen on Saturday”.

Andrea Bonacorsi: “I started quite good, for sure better than last Saturday…in the time Practice I was sixth and in the first race started third and I was riding confident, I was able to pass the two riders in front of me and go for the victory. In the second race I started around tenth place, but I wasn’t riding really good, so I tried to do my best and got the fifth place. I’m quite happy about the result of being second overall and we’ll see what will happen in the last race on Saturday. I’m ready for Saturday, I don’t want think too much about the Championship and I want to be super focused for the race and ride good and get a good result”.

Haakon Osterhagen: “I’m feeling really strong in the sand, I train all the winter for that but unfortunately the season hasn’t been like I was expecting, and I struggled a lot. In the first race I started second and after somebody push me out of the track so I had to push really hard to re-group and get an eight that was the maximum I could do. In the second race I started really good and I took the holeshot and I was leading from some laps as well; after though Braceras passed me and I tried to follow him. I had some issues but luckily, I was able to be 2nd and get the third overall. I’m feeling really good and I’m feeling really strong in the sand. I’m looking forward to the next round”.
