David Luongo Editorial - MXGP Mag Issue 130

Dear MXGP fans,

The end of July is marking the entrance into the last part of the FIM Motocross World Championship. With four Grand Prix which took place in the last 5 weeks, the rhythm accelerated for the biggest pleasure of our followers.

The beautiful island of Lombok hosted two GP this year. As usual, the local authorities welcomed all the attendants with a fantastic ceremony in the city of Mataram. Thousands of locals came to support the MXGP and MX2 stars during these incredible events.

In MXGP, the battle continued to gain into intensity with Jorge Prado, Tim Gajser and Jeffrey Herlings fighting for every point. Jorge Prado won the MXGP of West Nusa Tenggara and Jeffrey Herlings the MXGP of Lombok. Calvin Vlaanderen was able to complete both podiums for the first time of the season.

In MX2, the teammates of Neestan Husqvarna, Kay de Wolf and Lucas Coenen are trusting the top position of the podium Grand Prix after Grand Prix.

Going back to Europe, the MXGP of Czech Republic took place at the historical track of Loket, which also hosted the European Championship finals of the EMX65cc and EMX85cc as support classes. Almost 300 riders participated to this weekend of racing in all the classes and more than 400 bikes went to technical control. It is a fantastic milestone for our sport and a great testimonial for the next generations that will make their ride to MXGP in the coming years!

Finally, the Hell of Lommel took place last weekend. One of the most awaited and demanding Grand Prix in the year. It was a great success with probably one of the best crowds ever present at the Lommelwood venue. All the fans that were present could witness the amazing MXGP races that took place with the great battle between Jorge Prado and Jeffrey Herlings. Romain Febvre marked his comeback of racing with third overall. In MX2 Kay de Wolf extended his lead on Lucas Coenen.

On the media side, we are glad to share that TikTok MXGP platform reached 300.000 followers last week, thank you for following us!

After a break this weekend, the next MXGP will be running at the beautiful track of Uddevalla for the MXGP of Sweden and you can be sure that it will bring a lot of action.

See you in Sweden or on MXGP-TV.com!

LOTTE VAN DRUNEN ON BREAKING BARRIERS & BANGING BARS WITH THE BOYS IN MX2

Lotte van Drunen is fast becoming one of the biggest stars in motocross. At the MXGP of Flanders, this super friendly 16-year-old made history by scoring a point at the 14th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship in Lommel, Belgium, in MX2. But what made Lotte's decision to race MX2 so ground-breaking was not just her age or the fact that she is female but the track she chose for this challenge.

Lommel is recognized worldwide as one of the most challenging motocross tracks on the planet. Its sea-deep sand and brutal bumps make it the ultimate test of both rider and machine, often breaking even the best in MXGP. This is why many of the MXGP paddock choose Lommel as their training base during the winter. The track demands maximum physical and mental strength; any sign of weakness, and the track will eat you alive.

For Lotte, racing against the men in MX2 at the most difficult track on the calendar added to the thrill. "I've always loved racing the boys," she said. "Now I've got the opportunity to race here in Lommel. It's something I've always wanted to do. And why Lommel? Well, why not? I was basically born in the sand. I've done so many laps in the sand throughout my life, ever since I was on 65cc, and I have always loved it. I never give up, whereas a lot of people stop when the track gets too rough or too difficult."

"When most people go home because they're tired and the track is too rough to ride, I stay out there riding and just keep going. I think this is why I am so good now."

Lotte approached her first MX2 race with realistic expectations but managed to surprise everyone by scoring a championship point. "I didn't expect too much from it, honestly, but now I've got one point, so it's unbelievable!" she smiled. "It was really weird because in WMX, I am the one passing everyone, but in MX2, I was the one getting passed. I enjoyed it, though. It was really tough, but I definitely learned a lot from this."

So, what exactly did she learn? "I think pushing till the last lap was the hardest part because the track is so rough here," she explained. "Especially in the second race, because after the first race, I was already so tired, and then I had to go again. But it was really fun, especially to leave with a point—that definitely made it all worth it. I also think if I get a bit stronger, I can ride with the same style as the top boys. Right now, I need to change my style a little bit because I am just 16 years old and a girl, but in a few more years, as I get stronger, I think I can ride like them."

Having crossed 'racing the boys in MX2' off her bucket list, Lotte's next big event will be the sixth round of the FIM Women's Motocross World Championship, held on home soil in Arnhem, The Netherlands. She will arrive at the penultimate round with a 3-point lead in the championship. "I am really looking forward to my home GP and racing in front of my home fans. I won there last year and know I am fast in the sand. I am prepared for it, so I know I have a really good shot at winning again, as I did last year. The goal is to win there with a big gap and then go into the final round in Turkey with a lead so I can wrap up the championship."

TIM GAJSER – ONTO SWEDEN

Heading to Uddevalla in Sweden next week, the MXGP championship continues to heat up, with all three leading riders, Tim Gajser, Jorge Prado and Jeffrey Herlings winning a Grand Prix in the last month. Of course, Prado won the opening round in Indonesia (MXGP of West Nusa Tenggara), with Gajser winning in Loket, and Herlings taking wins in the MXGP of Lombok and Lommel last weekend.

As we turn our attention to Sweden, the series leader, Gajser could be something of a favourite to add Sweden to his GP victories and stop the momentum of his fellow five-time World champion, Herlings and of course, defending champion, Prado.

The HRC man has won in Sweden on two occasions, in 2015 and 2017 and he has always shown good speed there, finishing fifth in 2014, second in 2019 and 2022 and an unfortunate 10th last year (after missing most of the season with injury). Generally, Gajser could very easily, be the man to take victory in Sweden in a little over a weeks’ time.

For Gajser, the win in Loket was very important after losing both GPs in Indonesia and seeing his series points lead shrinking. The HRC factory rider had never won in Loket, and it was celebrated with a huge turn-out of Slovenian fans.

“It was amazing to finally get a win here in Loket,” Gajser said. “I’ve had some good moments here, but never been able to take the victory so this is just a great feeling. I didn’t have the best first race, but we worked together as a team to improve things for race two and I immediately felt a lot better. I got a good start, put pressure on the leader and then made a move midway through and controlled the rest of the race. A big thank you to all the team, and to all the fans Slovenian fans who create such an awesome atmosphere and who support me around the whole track. I’m glad I could finally repay them in Loket.”

However, soon after that success at Loket, came the MXGP of Flanders, at the toughest circuit in the World, Lommel. The deep sand in Belgium was unkind to the five-time World motocross champion. Until now, it was the worst Grand Prix of his season as he finished with 5-4 scores.

“It was tough to find the flow here this weekend and on a track like this, it made my life really difficult. In the end, fourth overall on a day that wasn’t my best, isn’t too bad, so I have to stay positive and focus on making sure that I do better in Sweden next time out. It will be a totally different challenge, but we will work hard on making that happen.”

Now, onto Sweden, whereas we have mentioned, he has had success and no doubt, with both Prado and Herlings continuing to close that points gap, the Honda man needs to make a statement. You get the feeling; he will arrive at Uddevalla with a lot of motivation to prove a point to everyone that he is the red plate holder.

FIVE AUSTRALIANS AND A NEW ZEALADER TO COMPETE AS WILDCARDS IN SEPTEMBER'S MXGP OF CHINA

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 2 August 2024 – The 16th September round of the 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship in China will be strengthened by the presence of six wildcards from the Australian ProMX ranks.

Six riders have accepted the challenge to compete in the Shanghai-based event – Nathan Crawford (KTM), Todd Waters (Husqvarna), Kirk Gibbs (GASGAS), Brodie Connolly (Honda), Jayce Cosford (Yamaha) and Byron Dennis (GASGAS) – as the championship returns to the world’s second most populous nation for the first time since 2019 and just a year before MXGP comes back to Australia.

The riders will participate in the classes that align with their ProMX campaigns, which means that MXGP trio Crawford, Gibbs and Waters – who currently fill positions 3-4-5 – will tough it out in the MXGP category and the remainder in the MX2 class.

The MXGP of China will be number 19 of 20 in a huge 2024 calendar, with the season ending in Spain at Cózar on September 29.

And then, in 2025, the frenzy and adrenalin-fuelled excitement of MXGP returns Down Under for the first time in 24 years. The MXGP of Australia in Darwin will be held in September 2025 and promoted by the Northern Territory Major Events Company, featuring the MXGP and MX2 classes as well as the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship and a national support class.

The 2025 MXGP calendar will be announced later this year. Stay updated on all the MXGP news Here

For the Aussies, the MXGP of China will certainly provide a taste of the intensity and degree of difficulty required to make an impact at the world championship level, with big names such as Tim Gajser, Jorge Prado, Jeffrey Herlings and Kay de Wolf awaiting them on the 1.620km Shanghai track.

Gajser is leading the MXGP Championship hoping for a fifth World title, and 19-year-old de Wolf has a handy buffer in the MX2 class with six rounds remaining, although his challengers remain motivated to close the gap

Of the six Aussies heading to China, former Motocross of Nations representatives Waters and Gibbs are the only ones with previous MXGP experience. Waters was ninth in the 2015 championship and, after winning the ProMX title in 2015, Gibbs then joined Waters at the season-ending MXGP round in America.

Peter Doyle, CEO, Motorcycling Australia:

"This is a great opportunity for the riders compete on the international stage, in an FIM World Championship where so many Australians have performed with distinction in the past.

It's certainly going to be a baptism of fire for the younger riders against seasoned MXGP competitors, but that's what sport is all about: pushing yourself to the limit and taking on new challenges.

The MXGP of China project will be a stepping stone as we build towards the MXGP of Australia in 2025."

ROMAIN FEBVRE AND KAWASAKI TOGETHER FOR TWO MORE YEARS

Romain Febvre and the Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP, who have already enjoyed a highly-successful partnership in the FIM MXGP World Championship since 2020, will continue together for two more years.

Since he joined Kawasaki five years ago Romain has been the most successful rider in the long history of the Kawasaki Racing Team in the MXGP class, earning series silver medals in both 2021 and 2023. Last season was one of major success as the Frenchman, who will turn thirty-three years of age in December, won six GPs and mounted the podium at thirteen rounds of the series! He started 2024 with the same dynamism, collecting six podiums from the first seven rounds until a thumb injury during the French GP forced him to miss several rounds and to surrender the battle for the world title. Already back on the podium last weekend at Lommel in Belgium in just his second race since his comeback, Romain has once again showed how competitive he remains on the KX450-SR that he has developed together with the KRT team and the Kawasaki engineers. Thanks to this successful co-operation he will enter the 2025 and 2026 MXGP World Championships with high goals and his legendary fighting spirit.

Romain Febvre: “I’m delighted to continue for two more years with Kawasaki; we know each other really well and I’m confident that we will again fight for the title, as we did this year until the injury which forced me to miss several rounds. Injuries can sometimes impact your motivation, but I showed in both 2022 and this year that I can fight for wins and podiums when I come back. For sure I might not have continued my career if I was not racing at the front of the pack, but my motivation is still there as I started racing motocross later than most of my rivals. We have signed a new two-year agreement; for me that was important as I want to be fully-focused on racing next season. Everyone knows how comfortable I am on the KX450-SR, and how I share the same goals with the team, so let’s go for two more campaigns.”

Shigemi Tanaka, General Manager, Marketing & Sales Division, Kawasaki Motors, Ltd. "For Kawasaki and our off-road retail and racing ambitions, this is great news. Romain knows and fully understands the race-winning potential of KX machinery and we are delighted that we will continue to have him not just at the start gate and on the podium but also as a key part of the development of current and future KX models that will appear in Kawasaki dealerships.”

Antti Pyrhönen (KRT team manager): "We are really proud to continue the co-operation with Romain; he is extremely important for us. Romain has already been with the team longer than any other rider; he knows the team, he knows the bike, and he represents the values of Kawasaki in the best possible way ... he is hard-working and lets the results do the talking. This is his character; he is a real fighter and we could not be happier that he will stay two more years with the team. Age is not a factor; indeed I feel Romain is forever young. He still has an incredibly high motivation and his performances have been getting better-and-better over the years; we saw this at the start of the season when he scored six podiums in the first seven GPs, That was the best start of his entire career and there is no doubt that he has the same hunger as ever."

Steve Guttridge (Race Planning Manager, Kawasaki Motors Europe): "Romain now has a long history with Kawasaki; he is truly a part of the family. For him to stay with us shows the commitment on both sides to continue the mission to win the World Championship. He has always told me that he loves the bike; he gels with the Kawasaki and for him the bike is most important. That is the common denominator to achieve our common target of winning the MXGP World Championship."
