MXGP Awards Concludes Successful 2022 Season in Turkiye!

AFYONKARAHISAR (Turkey) 4th September 2022 – The annual MXGP Awards celebrated yet another successful season of the FIM Motocross World Championship at the final round at the Bitci MXGP of Turkiye!

Once the chequered flag had fallen for the final time this season and the 2022 World Champions were officially confirmed with gold medals, it was time to begin the festivities with the annual ceremony.

The awards took place in the Moto Festival area at the Afyon circuit, in front of a huge crowd of fans and paddock personnel who joined in on the celebrations, which was the perfect end to a thrilling season of racing.

The MXGP Awards were hosted by the MXGP-TV Commentator Paul Malin and MXGP-TV Presenter Lisa Leyland with the entire event live-streamed worldwide on www.MXGP-TV.com, as well as MXGP’s YouTube channel.

The evening kicked off with a special message from Infront Moto Racing’s CEO David Luongo and FIM President Jorge Viegas who shared a few words about the 2022 season and took the opportunity to congratulate everyone for their efforts.

Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo: “First of all, Thank you all for coming to this fantastic Gran Prix here in Turkiye. Big thanks to the Governor, the Mayor, the Turkish Motorcycling Federation, the Organizer and everybody who made this event possible. This season has been a challenging one, being the first one post-covid. It was amazing to have the overseas back, with Argentina the first one, which was a big symbol and then Indonesia and other events that were missing during the previous two years, like Sweden and Finland. And also having the public back at the races was a very big and important moment. In MXGP, we have a great Champion as Tim Gajser who did not have it easy, with plenty of fast guys behind him pushing to win. And MX2… What can I say? It was incredible. Big Congratulations to Tom but also Jago who pushed hard and gave it his all. This evening it’s great to have all of the Champions with us, including the Junior and European champions, really it’s a full package here to celebrate. Thank you to all of the teams and riders for the support, motocross is a big family and everyone involved works incredibly hard to deliver a great championship like the one we saw again this year. Thank you all, enjoy your evening”.

FIM President Jorge Viegas: “Thank you so much to everyone in Turkiye, my friends, the riders, teams and special thanks to the public. What a better scenery than here, beautiful place and people. We had a wonderful championship which was decided today. We look forward to coming back even better next year. Enjoy your evening with the best riders in the world”.

The Awards ceremony officially began, as the winning teams and manufacturers were presented with their awards. Team HRC and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing received their winners’ plaques for securing the MXGP and MX2 titles, while Yamaha swept the manufacturer titles in MXGP, MX2 and WMX.

This year’s champions received their prizes next, with Timoteï Cez being the first to collect his award for winning the Junior e-Motocross series, followed by Ricardo Bauer the EMX65 Champion, Vitezslav Marek who won the EMX85 title, EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing Champion Cas Valk, EMX250 Champion Rick Elzinga, as well as the WMX, EMX2t and EMX Open Champions, Nancy Van de Ven, Toms Macuks and Jose Butron.

We also celebrated the FIM Junior World Champions in 125cc (Ivano Van Erp), 85cc (Gyan Doensen) and Lucas Leok who was the 2022 65cc World Cup Winner.

This year, Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder was the recipient of the Jan de Groot Award that honours the most promising young talent. Längenfelder was impressive this season as he ended the year third in the MX2 standings with 2 race wins, five podiums, including his Grand Prix win in Great Britain!

Additionally, Tom Vialle and Jorge Prado were presented with the Fox Holeshot Award, for their incredible starts this season. For Prado, this was his fifth consecutive Fox Holeshot Award, while for Vialle it was his third.

And then it was time to find out which MXGP rider was the winner of the Best Rider of the Year Sponsored by Athena prize! The newly crowned MXGP World Champion Tim Gajser was declared winner, having received the most fans’ votes in total throughout the 2022 season.

The evening then concluded with the awards for the two FIM Motocross World Champions, Tim Gajser and Tom Vialle who each received their championship plates, along with their champions rings as part of their prizes for this season.

KTM AND VRIGNON RACING TEAM FORGE CLOSER BOND FOR MXGP TALENT FLOW PROGRAMME

KTM Motorsports have strengthened an ongoing association with prominent European Championship motocross team, Team VRT KTM, to revitalise the junior talent development scheme in the sport. The French crew will field two riders in the EMX250 division in 2023 and 2024 and will become the ‘VRT KTM Factory Juniors Team’ with official backing.

Team VRT KTM, based south of Nantes and not too far from Grand Prix venue St Jean d’Angely, will further integrate into the KTM motocross racing structure for the next two seasons. KTM wish to re-establish the funnel of promising youngsters from the junior championship categories and a system of ‘spotting’ and development that helped the likes of Jeffrey Herlings, Jordi Tixier, Pauls Jonass, Jorge Prado, Rene Hofer and many others reach the higher echelons of the sport and even the status of Grand Prix winner and world champion.

VRT KTM have been working with junior riders and running KTM SX equipment (in both EMX250 and EMX125 divisions) for six years and are now solidifying the link with the racing HQ in Munderfing, Austria. Former MX and Enduro world champion Pela Renet is the Team Manager of the squad.

The project will officially begin with the 2023 EMX250 European Championship: the last stepping-stone for under-23-year-old racers before they move into the FIM Motocross World Championship and the MX2 class. The two representatives that will steer the KTM 250 SX-Fs have yet to be confirmed and will be announced in due course.

Diego Clement, Manager Offroad Commercial: “It gives us great pleasure to make this declaration of intent together with Team VRT KTM. We have had one of the strongest policies in terms of helping emerging riders at a young age and then providing a path or a structure for them to progress and to try and reach their sporting goals. We really want to continue this tradition, and when we look back on some of the names that we were able to guide over the years then this is a source of pride for us. It’s great we were able to play a part in these careers. It’s time to push on again and look for our new Herlings, Prados and Vialles of the future and I hope with Team VRT KTM we can lay some promising bricks in that direction.”.

Mickaël Vrignon, Team VRT KTM Team Owner: “We’re glad to make this change and be the VRT KTM Factory Juniors Team for at least the next two seasons. It was important for us to continue our relationship with KTM but this is another level and we’re proud to be the ones that could give riders that last push and potentially make the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team in the future.”

Elzinga Crowned EMX250 Champion as L. Coenen Wins the Final Round

SAINT JEAN D’ANGELY (France) 21 August 2022 – The round of Charente Maritime concluded the 2022 campaign of the EMX250 Championship that saw Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Rick Elzinga wrap up the title in the opening heat, while Jumbo BT Husqvarna Racing Team’s Lucas Coenen ended his season in the best way possible with a 1-1 scorecard and claimed his third overall win of the year as well as the silver medal in the standings!

A strong result for L. Coenen also meant that he secured the silver medal in the championship standings while Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cornelius Toendel dropped to third after an unlucky first race, in which he scored 0 points.

In the opening race of the weekend, the holeshot went to Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Hakon Osterhagen who led his teammate, Cornelius Toendel. Toendel was in a crucial position and needed every point possible to try to keep his championship hope alive, though that all ended quickly after he banged bars with another rider going down one of the downhills and crashed.

At that point, it was Osterhagen who continued to lead with Yago Martinez, Lucas Coenen of Jumbo BT Husqvarna Racing Team, Morgan Bennati, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Maxime Grau and David Braceras just behind.

Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Rick Elzinga started in around sixth, while Toendel picked himself up in 34th.

On lap three, Osterhagen crashed out of first place as L. Coenen took over the lead. Just behind him, Grau began to apply pressure onto Martinez for second as the two battled for almost the entire race.

Osterhagen dropped even further down the order to 10th as the battle inside the top five intensified between the likes of Braceras, Gerard Congost of Jezyk Racing Team, Quentin-Marc Prugnieres of 9MM Energy Drink Bud Racing Kawasaki for fourth.

TBS Conversions Camden McLellan was looking to join the battle too, but it was Prugnieres who came out on top as he also got by Grau on the final lap.

L. Coenen won the race though the focus was on the 2022 EMX250 Champion, Elzinga who crossed the line in 8th!

In race two, the holeshot went to Pietro Razzini of S11Motorsport DianaMX, but Grau was quick to react and got himself into the lead immediately. L. Coenen was third ahead of Francesco Bassi, Toendel, Bennati and Luca Ruffini, while Elzinga started down in ninth.

Osterhagen did not line up for race two after picking up an injury in his thumb during the crash in the first race.

Though by the end of the opening lap we saw another change for the lead as L. Coenen got by Grau. The Frenchman was looking to respond, though made a mistake and stalled his bike which allowed Razzini to close in.

Further down the order, Prugnieres had an incredible first lap as he managed to pass around 10 riders to find himself in 10th by lap two. Just ahead of him, Elzinga was also making good progress as he passed Bassi for sixth, then Braceras and eventually Toendel.

As the race went on, a nice battle began to form between Prugnieres, Tondel and McLellan who was looking to close in. Razzini just ahead of the group crashed out of third on lap five.

Elzinga was looking comfortable in third before an issue with his bike saw him quickly drop down the leader board. The newly crowned Champion came into pitlane for quick repairs and was able to continue with the heat. He eventually finished in 12th.

In the end, L. Coenen won the race and solidified another perfect 1-1 score and topped the podium ahead of Grau and Prugnieres who made the French fans proud by putting the flag on the second and third steps of the podium.

A strong performance for L. Coenen in the last few rounds also saw him claim the silver medal while Toendel dropped down to the bronze medal position.

Rick Elzinga: “No it definitely wasn’t easy. I was ill from the second half of the year, but managed some good races and managed the bad days pretty well. I think consistency got the job done. Can’t thank everyone enough, everyone at Yamaha, all the people at home and everyone behind me for all of these years. Three years ago, I was cleaning my own bike and now I have the chance to ride in GPs next year, so I can’t be happier!”.

Lucas Coenen: “A perfect end to the season going 1-1. Just a shame about Sweden but anyway it’s good, we are really happy with the team and there’s nothing else I can say”.

The French Dominate Qualifying Races at the MXGP of Charente Maritime with Febvre and Vialle on Top!

SAINT JEAN D’ANGELY (France) 20 August 2022 – The MXGP of Charente Maritime has kicked off with a French domination in the MXGP and MX2 qualifying races with victories for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing of Tom Vialle.

The already packed Saint Jean d’Angely circuit delivered on the usual French Grand Prix atmosphere, with plenty of fans turning out to show support from their home heroes who certainly produced the result everyone hoped for.

Alongside the celebrations of the French qualifying winners, we also witnessed Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Rick Elzinga wrap up the EMX250 during the first race of the category.

In the MXGP qualifying heat, it was Romain Febvre with the flying start ahead of Team HRC’s Mitch Evans and Tim Gajser as well as Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing’s Harri Kullas and Calvin Vlaanderen.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux started in around 13th position, he eventually managed to finish in 11th.

Evans was looking solid in second before he lost the front and crashed out of second place. The Australian lost plenty of positions as a result but managed to come back to eighth by the end of the heat.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer caught onto the rear wheel of Vlaanderen, and it was jumping the uphill triple that helped him secure the position, as he took away third from the Dutchman.

Further behind, Kullas and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff were then locked in a battle for fifth, with Coldenhoff managing to find his way past on the very final lap.

Gajser though was beginning to close the gap down to Febvre after being urged on by Seewer who was looking fast around the Saint Jean d’Angely circuit. As Seewer continued to push, the pressure began to mount, as Gajser made a mistake which allowed the Swiss right onto the rear wheel.

It looked like Seewer was ready to line up a pass on the Slovenian, but looped out and crashed pretty hard, though got going quickly and remained in third.

Febvre ended up winning the qualifying race for the second time in a row this season and will start from P1 tomorrow ahead of Gajser, Seewer, Vlaanderen and Coldenhoff.

Romain Febvre: “I didn’t have the best feeling on the track this morning, but I managed to do a good time practice and then qualifying went good. I took the holeshot which helped me a lot. I made a small gap in the beginning and then I was riding my own race without rushing. I saw Seewer was coming and he pushed Gajser to go faster, and they closed the gap. But I knew from this morning that Seewer was fast... Anyway, tomorrow I will try not to make the same mistakes as last weekend”.

MXGP - Qualifying Race – Top 10 Classification: 1. Romain Febvre (FRA, Kawasaki), 24:30.039; 2. Tim Gajser (SLO, Honda), +0:03.129; 3. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, Yamaha), +0:10.603; 4. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, Yamaha), +0:30.878; 5. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, Yamaha), +0:35.319; 6. Harri Kullas (EST, Yamaha), +0:36.628; 7. Pauls Jonass (LAT, Husqvarna), +0:44.101; 8. Mitchell Evans (AUS, Honda), +0:45.721; 9. Jorge Prado (ESP, GASGAS), +0:47.299; 10. Alberto Forato (ITA, GASGAS), +0:48.055;

In the qualifying race of the MX2 category, it was Team VRT KTM VERITISE rider Tom Guyon who took the holeshot from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle as well as Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Thibault Benistant and Jago Geerts.

Vialle wasted no time to get into the lead, as Benistant followed behind. Guyon dropped to third and was also later passed by Geerts.

Further down the order, Diga Procross KTM Racing’s Liam Everts took away sixth from F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Kevin Horgmo as Vialle held a 2.566 second lead over Benistant and Geerts.

Geerts was looking to close the gap to his teammate but may have pushed too hard as he crashed and dropped out of third place. He picked himself up in 11th.

Everts then continued his charge forward as he caught and passed Guyon for third on lap four. Shortly after, Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder made a move on SM Action Racing Team YUASA Batter’s Andrea Adamo for sixth. Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Roan Van De Moosdijk was just ahead of the pair.

In the final stages of the race, Benistant closed right in on his fellow countryman, as he and Vialle battled closely for the win. Despite Benistant’s best efforts, Vialle was able to hold on and cross the line just 0.198 of a second ahead.

Tom Vialle: "Today was a good day. Straightaway in practice I felt, I finished first and I had a good choice for the gate. In the first corner, I could pass to first and then managed a little bit to control the race, but Thibault was pushing quite a bit in the last four or five laps, so it was not easy”.
