BIG MAN FORATO ON TOP OF THE WORLD IN ITALY WHILE LAENGENFELDER DOMINATES HIS RAM QUALIFYING RACE

MAGGIORA (Italy) 16 September 2023 – What an eventful day that just ended in Maggiora with the MXGP and MX2 RAM Qualifying Races of the MXGP of Italy. Racing went strong despite the tough conditions brought by huge rain falling on Maggiora in the morning.

In MXGP, SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery MXGP’s Alberto Forato rode superbly at home, in front of the Italian crowd cheering for him the whole way through. The Italian took his first MXGP race win of his career. Behind him a raging battle went on between the front two riders in the Championship. Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado got the advantage and finished second while Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre settled for third.

In MX2, the excellent Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder displayed a clever race to win his fourth RAM Qualifying Race of the season in front of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts who is really getting back to his best with the second place and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen who stayed consistent to finish third.

The day was closed by an exciting Paddock Show which saw the winners of the RAM Qualifying Race coming up on stage alongside the Team Italy MXoN, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo, Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini and race winner Alberto Forato. The public also got treated to many Motocross Legends and former riders who will also take part in the Parade of the Legends Sunday morning. There were even more surprises for the fans with the presentation of the Maglia Azzurra by the FMI President Giovani Coppioli together with Team Italy to the public who erupted in joy.

The Race started perfectly for Jorge Prado who took a blistering start despite having the 12th gate pick which shows how much he perfected his starts. Behind the Red Plate, Alberto Forato got an amazing start to find himself 2nd in front of Team HRC's Tim Gajser.

The opening lap proved to be vital for the riders and unfortunately proved to be brutal for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Maxime Renaux who tipped over halfway a hill and got issues to retire from the race. However, the front riders kept riding strong especially Forato who showed an incredible pace to close the gap gradually with Prado. On lap 5 of 12, Forato got on the back wheel of the Spaniard to see the crowd going wild. The young Italian didn’t stop there as he made an excellent and ruthless pass on Prado halfway down a hill with the two riders going elbow to elbow. Forato kept his charge on to take the lead and fly away in front to take his first MXGP victory of his career, and what is more on home soil.

Prado got under pressure again on lap 6 by Gajser and could not defend the attack on the inside from the Slovenian. Gajser moved up to 2nd but crashed on lap 8 to go down to 5th. Prado got his 2nd place back and this time had to defend over the last 4 laps on the fast Febvre. Febvre started in 5th place but showed a blazing pace to pass Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer for 4th on lap 3 and found himself behind Prado after Gajser’s fall. The last few laps got very intense with Febvre trying everything to pass his rival in the Championship and keep his hopes of being champion alive. However, Prado showed great composure to defend strongly and keep the 2nd place until the end. Febvre had to settle for the 3rd place and lost one precious point to Prado.

Despite a great start, Seewer made some mistakes and had to settle for the 8th place in the end. On his side, after his fall Gajser picked himself in 5th right behind his teammate Ruben Fernandez. The Spanish rider who rode very consistently with a good pace thought he did the hardest to finish 4th but it was without counting on Gajser’s determination. The defending Champion managed to pass his teammate on the last lap to finish at a good 4th place. Fernandez settled also for a encouraging 5th place.

Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen showed again his consistency with solid race as he gained a couple of positions to finish 6th. The other home rider Mattia Guadagnini display another good performance to confirm his great results from Turkiye. Guadagnini shadowed Vlaanderen to finish 7th in the end.

Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Pauls Jonass also showed up again to finish in the points as he rode consistently and overtook ASA United GASGAS’s Ivo Monticelli for 9th on lap 5 to stay in that position until the checkered flag and get 2 points. Monticelli settled for 14th in the end. The last point was rewarded to Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff who had to employ all his skills on the treacherous track to go from 14th to 10th making some good moves along the way. The other home hero, MRT Racing Team Beta’s Alessandro Lupino unfortunately could not get better than the 18th place.

Alberto Forato: “That’s a lot for real! I don’t know what to say! I’m so happy, huge thanks to everyone. I’ve been working so hard to get finally here. Now I want to enjoy this and get ready for the two races tomorrow! Ciao Mama!”

In MX2, it was JM Honda Racing’s Camden Mc Lellan who took an amazing start to get in front on the very first corner. Mc Lellan led the way ahead of Jago Geerts and Simon Laengenfelder and showed amazing control on a track that tricked many riders.

Few of them being Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Everts who fell in the first corner along with his teammate Sacha Coenen. Everts managed to come back but crashed again on lap 5 of 11 to miss a good chance to reduce the gap in the Championship as he finished 17th and out of the points. S.Coenen made also another mistake and finished 27th.  The other rider who encountered some difficulties was Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf who started in 10th position to fall the first time on lap 2 and the second time on lap 4,  finishing 19th the end.

In the meantime, at the front, Mc Lellan was showing that he can lead a race with authority as he increased the gap at the lead to 8 seconds. Geerts, second for most of the race got under pressure by Laengenfelder on lap 8. It didn’t take long for the German to overtake the Belgian to move up to 2nd. Everyone thought that Mc Lellan would bring it home and get his first win in MX2, but the conditions took the better of him on lap 10 when the South African completely lost control of his livery and crashed out of the lead. It was a golden opportunity for Laengenfelder who took the lead to win his 4th RAM Qualifying Race of the season. Geerts finished at a good 2nd place while unfortunately, Mc Lellan finished 13th in the end.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen stayed consistent and out of danger to finish at an excellent 3rd place in front of Andrea Adamo. The Red Plate did the job on home soil to increase his lead on his closest rival and teammate Everts who was out of the points. It was a similar race for F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo who got a good start and maintain his position well given the conditions to finish 5th after capitalising on Mc Lellan’s crash.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Rick Elzinga and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Roan Van de Moosdijk rode for most of the race together, stayed consistent and kept they cool in tough condition to bring it home in 6th and 7th place respectively. The great operation of the day was for VHR Racing Team’s Isak Gifting who made a good start to go 7th in the opening lap. However, the Swedish rider lost control on a landing on lap 3 and went off track hitting a series of banners in a dominos-like moment but managed the incredible feat to stay on two wheels and get back on the track to keep racing. Despite losing few positions, the Swede went back at it to overtake Team Ship To Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Emil Weckman to finish 8th. Weckman also showed great skill in the mud as he finished 9th.

The performance of the day was for the returning Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Thibault Benistant who fell in the opening lap to find himself in 15th position but showed the talent that we all we know to cleverly move up into the points and finish in a very good 10th place given his start.

Simon Laengenfelder: “It was a difficult race as in the end the helmet got so heavy and the goggle was just hanging on the edge! The track was difficult to ride and I was lucky to stay on the bike over the first lap but it was a good race and I’m so happy to get the pole position tomorrow.”

DAVID LUONGO – EDITORIAL – AUGUST 2023

Dear MXGP Friends,

As we are entering the last sprint of the 2023 MXGP season, the last three Grand Prix gave us a preview of what September would look like.

After Finland, the MXGP went back to Uddevalla in Sweden and its iconic circuit, located alongside the brown cliffs and rocks of the area. This year, the weather brought us heavy rain and the weekend turned to be a muddy race. To race in those conditions is never easy and I would like to thank the organizer and all the people that worked hard on the track to give the best conditions possible to the riders. Jeremy Seewer made a very strong performance and got the win in front of Romain Febvre and Jorge Prado, and in MX2, the German rising star Simon Laengenfelder won the Grand Prix in front of Liam Everts and Andrea Adamo. Besides racing, we announced the renewal of the Grand Prix of Sweden for three more years.

Then we went back to the Netherlands in Arnhem, a venue that was hosting for the first time the MXGP World Championship. It was a big success, as the fans answered the call to support the Dutch riders after a year without a Dutch Grand Prix. Arnhem offered the best facilities, the organization of the event was very good, and the races were great, too. Febvre added one more GP victory to his book and Everts confirmed he won’t give up the championship until the end! It is very positive to have found a venue that can host the Grand Prix of the Netherlands with a long-term vision and to secure the event in the country.

Then, the first weekend of September brought us to Turkiye and the city of Afyon. As every year, the welcome of the riders and the whole paddock was exceptional. The quality of the infrastructure and the support of the authorities and the city in the development of the Grand Prix in Turkiye is an example to follow.

The MXGP of Turkiye hosted the last round of the FIM Women Motocross World Champion and Courtney Duncan was crowned as champion and added one more championship to her career! The new generation is coming and pushing hard and I am sure we will see more and more talented women competing in this championship in the future.

In the EMX250cc it was also an important day for Andrea Bonacorsi as he obtained the title. The Italian rider will certainly move to the MX2 class next year full of confidence.

In both MXGP and MX2 class, the leaders lost points during the weekend. Tim Gajser won his first Grand Prix of the year after the winter injury that obliged him to stay away for months from the races. Maxime Renaux made his come back to the podium with a third overall position and Romain Febvre finished second and closed the gap with Prado to 67 points. In MX2 it was even closer with Everts’ victory in front of Kevin Horgmo and Jago Geerts. Horgmo went for the first time on the podium and Everts ended up the Grand Prix 48 points away from Adamo with two races to go!

The MXGP season will stay open until the end and the last two rounds will be full of expectations, tension and action. This weekend we are back in Maggiora, one of the most iconic tracks in the World for the MXGP of Italy. For this occasion, we will organize a Legends Parade on Sunday with all the most iconic and popular riders that made the history of our sport. Then we will head to UK and Matterlay Basin for the finale of the championship.

We will have some days to take a breath before driving to Ernée and witness the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations that will take place on the 7/8 of October. It is already on the way to be the most popular, crowded, exceptional and spectacular motocross event of the history. Be sure to be present, be part of the history!

See you in Maggiora.

TV COVERAGE: HOW TO WATCH THE MXGP OF ITALY

Maggiora (ITALY) 15 September 2023 – The eighteenth round of the 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship is arriving in Maggiora this weekend for the MXGP of Italy.

This mythical track will welcome back some of the Motocross legends who have contributed to its renown since 1966, with a parade organized in their honor on Sunday. It's sure to be an emotional event for those nostalgic for the old days, but also for the young generation, who certainly has not forgotten that Team HRC's Tim Gajser and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team's Jago Geerts won here last year. And they will both be present for this penultimate meeting of the season.

This weekend will be an important date in the calendar with the potential crowning of the MXGP Champion with Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who can win it all if he performs to his usual standards. The Spaniard has a 67 points cushion on Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre and will need to be 61 points ahead of the Frenchman to win the Championship in the end. In MX2, the Championship is tighter with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo leading his teammate Liam Everts by 48 points but the Championship win on home soil for the Italian is still a possibility.

Italian media coverage will be excellent this weekend, especially with Rai Sports covering all the MX2 and MXGP races on Sunday. And there will again be a large worldwide LIVE coverage, including Eurosport 2, Teledeporte, Moji, Automoto TV la Chaîne, FOX Sports Mexico and more.

Below you can find a list of TV channels that will air LIVE and delayed action of the MXGP of Italy, as well as the 26min Behind-the-Gate magazine featuring the best moments from the races, exclusive interviews and more will be available on MXGP-TV.com and via our TV magazine partners following the Grand Prix.

MAGGIORA ALL SETS FOR PIVOTAL GRAND PRIX IN MXGP AND MX2

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 13 Septembre 2023 - The 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship settles in Maggiora for the MXGP of Italy. The eighteenth and penultimate round of the campaign could well see two new Champion in MXGP and MX2.

The old-school circuit of Maggiora has a rich history and has been the theatre of many spectacular races since its first event in 1966. Showing its importance in motocross, the magnificent Italian track hosted three Motocross of Nations including the legendary MXoN of 1986 with team USA achieving perfect scores.

Over the last editions in Maggiora, the most successful rider was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings with 3 Grand Prix victories (2013, 2014 in MX2 and 2021 in MXGP). However, with Herlings not taking part over this weekend’s Grand Prix due to injury, Team HRC's Tim Gajser is the second most successful rider in Maggiora with 2 wins. One in MX2 in 2015 and one last season in MXGP while Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre also won there in 2015 in MXGP.

In MXGP, Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado could be crowned as the Red Plate boasts a 67 points gap on his only contender for the title, Febvre. Prado would become MXGP Champion if after Race 1, he would have 85 points on Febvre or if at the end of the Grand Prix, he would 61 points more than the Frenchman.

In MX2, there are technically still four riders in contention with Leader Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Everts, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts and Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder although the two KTM teammates Adamo and Everts are the ones with the most chance to achieve the mighty win.

The 2022 MXGP of Italy was held in Maggiora and marked the seventh round of the season and saw Tim Gajser win the overall with a perfect score in front Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Maxime Renaux.

Jorge Prado has a golden opportunity to bury the competition in Maggiora if the Red Plate keeps on doing what he knows best; getting great starts, win races and stay consistent. The last Grand Prix in Turkiye was not the dreamed scenario for Prado who made an uncharacteristically mistake on the second corner of Race 1 and fell which hindered his chances of winning. The second race was another twist of fate for Prado as he stalled in the same corner to finish 10th overall, his lowest result of the season. He will want to be back on top to secure the Title as soon as possible.

Romain Febvre keeps on performing at his best with another race win in Turkiye and finishing 2nd overall. On the form of his life Febvre, does not have his destiny in his own hands but can certainly put pressure on Prado as he has done brilliantly over the second part of the Championship. Freshly resigned to Kawasaki, Febvre will give everything he has to get as close as possible and not giving the title to Prado easily.

Jeremy Seewer had, like Prado an unexcepted dip in form in Turkiye with a 8th overall. If the Swiss cannot reach the MXGP Title anymore, he can certainly secure the 3rd place in the Championship. He also secured his spot for next season in Kawasaki Racing Team alongside Febvre which will free him over the last two Grand Prix and could bounce back in Maggiora.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff is 4th in the Championship and will arrive in Maggiora on the back of a 7th place overall. The Dutch rider is 48 points behind his teammate Seewer and can still fight for the podium.

Team HRC’s Rubén Fernández has been a force to reckon with in 2023 and his consistency placed him in 5th overall. The Spanish will have to make sure to keep the great performer Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen at bay to keep his position I the Championship. It won’t be easy knowing that Vlaanderen clinched a 4th overall in Turkiye showing a very good speed.

The first Italian in the Championship SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery MXGP’s Alberto Forato is 8th and will be competing at home with the support of the crowd. Forato could not be in a better position after getting his career’s best finish in MXGP with 5th overall in Turkiye. What a moment it would be for the strong rider if he could get a long-awaited podium in home soil. He will also be full of confidence knowing that he will be representing his country at the MXoN in Ernée.

Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Valentin Guillod who is 9th in the Championship has not been very lucky recently after some falls like in Turkiye that placed him 14th overall. The Swiss could create the surprise knowing that his starts are getting better and better as he has shown in Turkiye with a FOX Holeshot.  However, Maxime Renaux is not far behind the Swiss (only 8 points) and looking at the Frenchman’s performance in Turkiye, it will be hard to contain the 2021 MX2 World Champion. Reanux is getting back to his best and is eager to get even better feelings before the Motocross of Nations.

The other home rider this weekend will Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini who signed his return to the competition in Turkiye after his injury with an excellent 9th overall. Guadagnini has also been announced for the MXoN which he will work towards, starting with the MXGP of Italy.

MRT Racing Team Beta’s Alessandro Lupino will be happy to come back home after a string of results that are not reflecting his real level. The Italian will try to better his 8th overall in Latvia earlier this season with the help and support of the home crowd that will cheer for him.

Kawasaki Racing Team’s Mitch Evans will be forced to miss the MXGP of Italy due to a wrist injury that has bothered him for the last weeks. The Australian will try to recovery and get back at it at 100% for the last round of the season, the MXGP of Great Britain.

The 2022 MXGP of Italy in MX2 saw Jago Geerts winning in front of his rival Tom Vialle. Stephen Rubini closed the podium in third position.

All eyes will be turned to teammates Andrea Adamo and Liam Everts who are the closest to the MX2 title. However Andrea Adamo still boasts 48 point on his teammate and could well be crowned on home soil despite missing a good chance in Turkiye as he lost many point with a 6th overall. One thing is guaranteed is Adamo will give his all I front of the home fans who will be there to give an important support throughout the weekend. The dream of winning the MX2 World Title could be complete if done in Maggiora. On top of that, Adamo will ride at the MXoN in the Nations which is also an achievement.

Liam Everts on his side is displaying a great form as he is coming to Maggiora on the back of a back-to-back victories, closing the gap with the Red Plate. Everts has nothing to lose and that can be seen in his current form. He is making a great name of his own and will do everything he can to reduce even more the gap with Adamo. Everts has been selected to represented Team Belgium at the MXoN which is a added motivator for him to keep his form at his best.

Jago Geerts is technically still in contention and clinched his first podium in Turkiye since coming back from his injury. The most important for Geerts will be to raise his fitness and level to 100% before the Motocross of Nations.

4th in the Championship, Simon Laengenfelder will be more focus on performing for his own benefits knowing that he will be an important part of Team Germany at the MXoN. The German will also try to put pressure on Geerts for the 3rd place in the Championship being only 5 points adrift from the Belgian.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen 5th in the Championship had to retire from the MXGP of Turkiye during the first race due to a fall that injured his shoulder. He will try to line-up for the MXGP of Italy and get back to his usual form before the MXoN with Team Belgian alongside his MX2 countrymen, Geerts and Adamo.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Roan Van de Moosdijk has signed a solid return in Turkiye after weeks of recovery as he finished 5th overall, even leading races at some point. Van De Moosdijk comes to Maggiora with the will of coming back to his best before the end of the season and preparing already for next season.

F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo is a solid 7th in the Championship and finally managed to climb on the podium with the 2nd place in Turkiye along with his first race win of his career. His determination, hard-work and speed have finally paid-off and will give the Norwegian some wings over the last two Grand Prix with the weight of winning a race lift off his shoulder.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf who is now 8th in Championship due to few injuries this season will sign his long-awaited return since his injury sustained at Lommel for the MXGP of Flanders. The Dutch took his time to recover perfectly and made sure to be competitive. De Wolf will now work towards the MXoN in Ernee in October where he will compete in MX2 with Team Netherlands.

MITCH EVANS FORCED TO MISS THE MXGP OF ITALY

Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP and Mitch Evans have decided mutually for the rider to skip the next round of the FIM MXGP Motocross World Championship as the Australian is suffering from a wrist injury.

MXGP of Turkey last week was a tough one for Mitch; he was riding in pain in both motos as irritation to an old wrist injury caused more-and-more discomfort until the point that he could no longer display his usual speed but he persevered to score championship points with a twelfth and a sixteenth position. Back in Belgium the factory rider visited a specialist and underwent dedicated treatment to recover as soon as possible, but he is still unable to train on the bike and riding would only delay the healing process. With the GP of Italy scheduled for next weekend both team and rider prefer to give the injury time to heal fully; a decision will be taken later concerning the final MXGP of the season in Great Britain.

KRT Team Manager Antti Pyrhonen: “We are working closely with Mitch to find the best way for him to recover to 100%. For sure it’s a tough decision to withdraw Mitch from Italy but we’re convinced that it is the right one; then we will see when is the best time to be back racing. We thank Mitch for his professional attitude and for taking the right choice in terms of his fitness and ability to compete at the highest level."
