MIKKEL HAARUP CONTINUES WITH TRIUMPH IN NEW DEVELOPMENT ROLE

Triumph is pleased to announce that Mikkel Haarup will remain with the brand for 2025 and 2026. During the first year of the new agreement, the talented racer – who secured fifth in the 2024 FIM MX2 Motocross World Championship – will transition into a development role between Triumph and Monster Energy Triumph Racing to fine-tune the TF 450-RC ahead of its MXGP debut. Then, in 2026, Haarup will return to racing full-time by lining up in the premier class of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

Having played a vital role in developing the TF 250-X ahead of the 2024 MX2 World Championship, Haarup is the perfect candidate for this hybrid role. Mikkel’s experience, attitude, and work ethic have proven invaluable to Triumph, and given his multiple podium results during last season, it was an easy decision for Triumph to retain the services of the talented Danish racer.

In his new role, Mikkel will divide his time between working with Triumph’s in-house development team and Monster Energy Triumph Racing throughout 2025. This pivotal position will ensure the TF 450-RC is fully competitive for its MXGP debut in 2026 and allows all involved in the project ample time to develop settings for the variety of circuits visited on the MXGP calendar.

Mikkel Haarup

“It’s an honour for me to once again say that I’ll be a part of Triumph and Monster Energy Triumph Racing. Next year I’ll be working closely with Triumph’s engineering department to develop the bike that I’ll be racing on the following year. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity and something that I couldn’t say no to. It’ll be an experience that will set us up nicely for the MXGP season in 2026 where I’ll not only make my debut in the MXGP class, but it will be Triumph’s as well. To be able to do this with the brand and the racing team that I have worked with for more than a year already really is something special and I’m excited to get started.”

Ian Kimber – Head of Global Racing Programmes, Triumph Motorcycles

“I am really happy to be able to keep Mikkel with Triumph, and for him to still be our first MXGP rider. With our 450 programme moving to 2026, and Mikkel aging out of MX2 in 2024, it left us in a difficult position. However, with our new deal, it means that we can spend 2025 working with Mikkel and the team, to ensure that the bike is competitive and Mikkel is at home on the new bike. Mikkel’s attitude and work ethic is an asset to our programme, and I know he will push as hard as he can for success. Having a rider who already knows Triumph and the team will be invaluable towards starting our MXGP campaign successfully in 2026.”

STEVE DIXON – BRITISH GP

While we have just seen the British held, Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, the 2025 calendar didn’t originally include a British GP, although MXoN and British GP promoter, Steve Dixon knows that things can change and having had a really tough 2024 season, with his team and the effort gone into the MXoN, held at his Matterley Basin circuit, he was open for the GP to miss a season, but fortunately for British fans, Dixon has again put his hand up and the British GP and Matterley Basin is back on the calendar.

A year off from being a promoter isn’t such a bad idea for Dixon, but you know, if there was a calendar change, he was more than happy to see the event return to Matterley Basin and he will again, put in the hard work to make it the best event it can be.

“You know,” Dixon said. “A calendar is always mixed up a little bit, because it's very difficult, for the countries to speak to their councils and everything, the people who want to invest in a World championship round or speaking to the federations. Things are a lot deeper than anyone knows, and things can also change quickly. The British Grand Prix doesn’t get government backing, so it is a round that we (Infront Moto Racing (IMR) and Dixon) need to work around to make it work.”

While the British Grand Prix is often a venture that is shared between IMR and Dixon, it isn’t something that happens easily and a lot of work has to go into making it the event it is. With Dixon working on the ground and with support from IMR, the British Grand Prix, is always one of the stand-out events of the year.

“In Britain we had a period, where we didn’t have a Grand Prix for three years and the country needed a commitment to have a place to run a Grand Prix, a place that would become the home of the event. The ACU came to me and said, we need stability of the British Grand Prix, will you run it, and we pay for it, then weeks before the GP contract would be signed, ACU decided to pull out. So, Youthstream (now IMR) said, we'll partner with you in running the GP, we need the British GP, motocross is a great heritage in Great Britain and its sort of been the same ever since. For me, they have a big interest in keeping motorsport alive in the UK, and it's difficult in the UK, there's a lot of laws, there's a lot of costs. Huge amount of costs, but people only see the rosy side. People don’t realize what IMR do behind the scenes for the sport in the UK.”

As we all know, costs for just about everything in the World have risen and even more so in countries like England, where Brexit has made so many aspects of running a sporting event more complicated. Motocross has never been a sport in the UK that gets the support from the government it needs, but still, Dixon and IMR always make it work.

“Unfortunately, in the UK, motorsport doesn't receive any of that type of backing from the government. Britain has excelled in other areas like cycling, Olympic sports. The government fund sports that are available to the masses. Motorsport, or horse jumping for example are not available to the masses, so, that's why there's no funding there and you know, I understand this. To make British motocross continue, and we have to go back to the main reason I took the Grand Prix over and have run for as long as I have. The British Grand Prix was always a massive part of my sponsorship because I used to take 300 guests to the VIP at a GP. I would buy an area at the GP, in the paddock and invite my big sponsors, the team sponsors. Same as Jacky Martens does at Lommel.”

So, now, with the Grand Prix promoters meeting to be held last week, Matterley Basin and the British Grand Prix is back on the 2025 calendar, and everyone is excited for this. One thing is for sure, whenever called upon to run another British Grand Prix, Steve Dixon will always stand up and do his best to give the British motocross fans a weekend, they won’t forget. Bring on the British Grand Prix of 2025.

MRT RACING TEAM BETA LINES UP BEN WATSON AND TOM KOCH FOR THE 2025 MXGP SEASON

It's going ahead the Beta \ MRT Team partnership in the FIM Motocross World Championship; 2025 will be the fifth year in MXGP for Beta, the third with MRT Team.

In the coming season on the Beta RX 450 of the Beta MRT Team there will still be two riders, Ben Watson as in the last years and Tom Koch, who is a new entry for Beta!
Tom Koch, a twenty-six-year-old German rider, gets his first chance as an official rider in the Beta MRT Team and everybody is expecting a lot from him. He has already stated that he is determined to make a strong comeback from the season just ended, where he only managed to race eleven GPs out of twenty (but anyway finished in the top twenty in the championship overall).

BEN WATSON: "2025 will be my third season with Beta. Obviously I am looking forward to racing again, I have a great feeling with the whole group in the factory and the MRT Racing Team. 2024 was going well, before my injury. But now, after a rest and recovery period, I am ready to start again. Beta has made a good step forward on the bike and after a couple of days of testing I can say that there has been a significant improvement and I am confident. Now it's time to start working for 2025, my plan is to focus on my speed and improve my starts and then I really believe I can be competitive".

TOM KOCH: "This is the chance I have been waiting for for several years now, and I will try to make the most of it! Now that I have got to know the team and the bike I am even more excited about a season full of satisfaction. [...] I was very curious to ride a Beta... I was surprised because I felt good right away, we just adjusted the ‘controls’ and the suspension to my personal style and I really liked it. It's easy to handle and compact and the first impressions when riding it were very positive. It's also very interesting to take part in the development of a bike, there's so much to learn. I want to improve and become better, to fight more consistently for the top-ten".

MXGP IN 2025 – TIGHT STRUGGLE

While we all sit back and wait for 2025 to arrive, we can only get excited for what is coming in the MXGP championship of 2025. With two five-time World Motocross champions in Jeffrey Herlings and Tim Gajser, not to mention the defence of his MX2 World championship, by Dutchman Kay de Wolf, there is more than enough to keep our interest.

Herlings and Gajser have been rivals now for a decade, from the moment Gajser captured the 2015 MX2 World title after Herlings had led the championship until injury forced him out of the season and since that 2015 MX2 championship fight, Herlings has won an MX2 title in 2016, then MXGP in 2018 and 2021, while Gajser has won the MXGP championship in 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2022. Herlings knows he can win, but he needs to be at the front early to achieve that.

“All I need is consistently good starts,” Herlings mentioned this year. “I feel like, I am at the level now that I can run anyone’s pace, from the guys I am racing, but I have to be with them, straight from the beginning of the moto. I don’t have the pure speed anymore, where I can come from P9 to P1. You know what I mean. The dominant days, they are over. Even today, I won, but it isn’t like a won by half a minute, you know? We just keep going from here.”

As for Gajser, he always relies on his consistent results and while not always at the same speed as Herlings in the past, his speed in 2024 was as good as anyone’s and only a mistake in the Oriental Beauty Valley MXGP of China, cost him a sixth World title.

“After having such a consistent season, to have a day like today at such a crucial time is hard to take. To lose the championship red plate with one round left was definitely not what I wanted to happen, and I had to win them all. It wasn’t an ideal situation.”

But it won’t just be Herlings and Gajser going for victory in 2025, because Kawasaki factory rider, Romain Febvre, new MXGP rider, Lucas Coenen and veteran, Jeremy Seewer on the Ducati, will all want a piece of the MXGP pie next year. Many eyes will be on Coenen on the De Carli factory KTM machine, and you just know, this young teenager isn’t racing MXGP to finish off the podium.

“I do know, on the 450 I am two seconds quicker than on the 250. From the outside, I look slow on the 450, because I am rolling the corners, but then we look at the times and it’s like, wow, this is fast. Sometimes people look fast from the outside and the lap times are slow, but I am completely the other way around. I don’t’ push the corners, just roll them and then it doesn’t look like WOW, but its fast, you know. Some of the tracks we ride now are really difficult, like Loket, on that track, you need to be in good shape and full focus the whole race. If you lose one second of concentration, you are in trouble, you cannot make a mistake there. Tracks like Lommel, I love Lommel or the other sand tracks, because you flow around that track.”

So, with Herlings and Gajser as the early favourites for 2025 and possibly adding a sixth World title, do not count out the others, because all want to be crowned World motocross champion at the end of the season. Just like 2024, and that legendary 2021 season, tough, tight racing will be what we expect in 2025.
