Team USA: Going for 23rd Victory

When you talk about the greatest teams of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, it is easy to select a group from the dominant era of Team USA. With riders like Rocky Johnson, Jeff Ward, David Bailey, Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart, Ryan Villopoto or Jeff Emig, the AMA legends are aplenty when it comes to the MXoN, and victory has been often.

While Team USA haven’t won the Chamberlain trophy since 2011 in France, this year’s team has all the look of a team capable of taking MXoN victory number 23 for America. AMA 450 motocross champion Eli Tomac, AMA 450 runner-up Chase Sexton and the top American in the AMA 250 motocross championship, Justin Cooper will head to RedBud in a weeks’ time with confidence to slay the leading Grand Prix riders and European nations.

For Tomac, it might be fourth time lucky as he has competed in the event on three occasions, back in 2013, 2014 and 2018, when it was last at the Redbud circuit. The multiple time AMA champion, who has talked of retirement in recent weeks might be making his last MXoN appearance and will want to make it a memorial one.

“I always love this race and am excited to represent Team USA at Redbud,” Tomac said. “It didn’t go our way in 2018 or the previous times I rode for my country and defeat doesn’t taste nice. Now with Chase and Justin on the team, I think we have a really good set of riders, who are capable of fighting for the win.”

Sexton, who will make his Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations debut and has all the confidence that his country will battle for the win. Living just close to the Redbud circuit, Sexton sees this event as a home race.

“I am excited,” Sexton said. “It has always been a dream of mine to race for the USA, and for it to be at Red Bud is going to be really cool. I am just focusing on going to go there and trying to do the best that I can, and I know Eli as well. We obviously want to win for USA and get the trophy back here because it has been a while. I am excited for Redbud. It’s a home race for me, especially because I grew-up near there. So, it is home for the USA, and it is home for me. I am really looking forward to it.”

No doubt many teams will be vying for the win in a little over a weeks’ time, and you just know a huge crowd will be in attendance to cheer on the local riders. A decade has passed since Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey and Blake Baggett stood on top of the podium at the St Jean d’Angely circuit in France and while they struggled somewhat in the rain of RedBud in 2018, a new team and a new motivation might just let us hear the American national anthem once again at the biggest motocross race in the World.

De Coster and Team USA

There is no doubt, we have to go all the way back to 1981 at the Lommel circuit in Belgium to remember the first time Team USA showed the Grand Prix riders that they were good enough to win a Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations. With Roger De Coster keen to send a team to Belgium, he selected his Honda factory team riders Johnny O’Mara, Danny Laporte, Chuck Sun, Donnie Hansen and David Bailey for the job.

With full support from Honda America, they young team arrived in Belgium early and it was a feeling of confidence that this young American line-up had enough to trouble the Belgian sand specialists.

“Our team went over early,” De Coster remembered. “We went to sand tracks and practiced and practiced and practiced. We initially had a lot of bike problems because we had no experience in the US riding on sand like that. But we worked through the whole thing, and by race-time we were ready.”

Although suffering mechanical issues, De Coster felt the Honda machines of the 1981 season were special and with some extra work could easily give his team some type of result to surprise the Grand Prix riders.

“We could see the potential in the Honda bikes and team members for those events. Our guys were not winning at the time though. Suzuki had Mark Barnett winning the 125 class and in supercross. And Kent Howerton on Suzuki was strong in the 250 class. Our team was Johnny O’Mara, Chuck Sun, Danny LaPorte and Donnie Hansen. Towards the end of the year, our results started to improve. We thought ‘We need to go to the Nations’.”

De Coster, being a Belgian legend in the sport didn’t feel comfortable bringing a team to beat his beloved Belgians, but a job is a job, and he went in 100% to bring the Chamberlain trophy back to America with his Honda team.

“I had problems with myself to a certain extent because it felt strange coming and representing the US. I had always tried to win as a rider for Belgium. In the Trophee des Nations, as a member of the Belgian team, I was part of the winning team ten years in a row. We also won six times in the open class (500cc – Motocross des Nations).”

Amazingly, now more than 40 years later De Coster will take Team USA to Redbud, and after a decade of not winning the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, his motivation remains the same as back in 1981. Victory is the only goal, and who knows, maybe the old veteran can once again share the taste of champagne with Team USA.
