THIBAULT BENISTANT – FOCUSED ON 2024

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory rider Thibault Benistant is very much in the picture when it comes to contenders for this year’s MX2 World Championship. The Frenchman is 21 years old and has a little more experience than many of the younger riders in the 250 class, and he feels that it might help him on occasions this year.

“I think we will have some young guy riding in front,” Benistant said. “A lot of the time and for sure, somebody like Liam (Everts), Simon (Langenfelder) and myself, we will be smarter and maybe win a few GPs in a row. I think my experience will help a lot. We all want that World championship, but I want to be consistent and that will lead to a World championship, I think. So, both really, go for the championship and being consistent. Of course, and it will be tight, because some guys get more experience, and some young guys are coming up also. I don’t really look at them and just focusing on myself and do what I can. I train good and focus on my program and see how that goes at the beginning of the season.”

With two stunning Grand Prix victories in 2023 and a handful of podiums finishes Benistant knows his way to the top three, however he only rode 14 GP’s last year and that is also a trend, as he rode 15 in 2022 and 16 in 2021. That is something he has worked on in the winter, to keep away from the back of an ambulance.

“Some is bad luck. I crashed in the start last year after somebody caught my wheel. When I am not feeling 100% or great with the track and my rhythm wasn’t good, then I took it easy last year. For the championship I was riding good, but that start crash was just bad luck. In the previous years it was my fault, the injuries.”

Fortunately, while the Monster Energy Yamaha MX2 team has changed hands in 2024, the “new” team is a team that Benistant feels comfortable with and had success back in his European championship days.

“I rode for this team when I was European champion on EMX250, and I just changed my mechanic, and the manager of the team has been my trainer for the last four years now. We have a good communication and even the boss of the team I talk to all the time at the races, so it really isn’t something new for me. The way of working I know, and it isn’t similar, but it is really good, and I am very comfortable there.”

Now, as we edge towards the opening round of the MX2 championship in Argentina on March 10, the feeling is that, anyone of 10 riders can win that Grand Prix. For Benistant, he will go in with the goal to finish well inside the top five and come out healthy for rounds two in Spain a couple of weeks later. A good start and many points will without question make the rest of the season a little bit easier.

EVERTS TO MISS THE YPF INFINIA MXGP OF PATAGONIA-ARGENTINA OPENER AFTER SUCCESSFUL HAND SURGERY

MX2 Grand Prix winner Liam Everts will sit out the first round of the 2024 MXGP series at Villa La Angostura in Argentina on March 9-10 to recover from an injury to his right thumb, sustained in in pre-season.

The Belgian MX2 contender athlete suffered a fall while in preparation for the new season. After undergoing an operation on Thursday the 19-year-old requires a month of convalescence before he can get back on his bike and could be in contention for the second fixture of the year in late March at the MXGP of Spain.

Harry Norton, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager: “Tough news for Liam and the team but we all know these setbacks can happen. The operation went well and now we need that four-week period for him to feel strong and to get full use of his hand. Argentina is out, but we are hopeful that his recovery goes to plan and Liam can start his championship in Madrid.”

ON THE GAS FOR MXGP24: RED BULL GASGAS FACTORY RACING

The wait is nearly over! As the 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship season rolls into sight, the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing team is gearing up for what promises to be an awesome season ahead. With three top-tier riders locked and loaded, as well as a winter of intensive preparation in the books, the team is ready to go bar to bar with the competition right from the first gate drop on March 10th.

  • Jorge Prado is ready to defend his MXGP world championship title with Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing.
  • Simon Längenfelder is eyeing improvement on his impressive back-to-back 3rd place finishes in the MX2 World Championship.
  • New to the team, exciting talent Marc-Antoine Rossi is now living his dream with Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing.

Defending 2023 MXGP World Champion Jorge Prado’s attention is now fully on MXGP 2024, with a comprehensive bike testing schedule, as well as a planned race before the season opener in Argentina on March 10th. Better still, Jorge's peak fitness and fired-up attitude signal that the reigning world champ is all set to pick up from where he left off in 2023.

In MX2, 20-year-old Simon Längenfelder enters his third year with the team. The phenomenally talented German rider has competed in GASGAS colors since the manufacturer debuted in the Grand Prix series in 2020; after which, he signed to the elite Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing awning for the 2022 FIM Motocross World Championship. '516' made an immediate splash by dominating the season-opening Grand Prix of Great Britain, and then went on to secure third in the championship standings. In 2023, Längenfelder scored a phenomenal 13 top-five finishes, nine podiums, and two wins, resulting in another third-place overall finish in the standings. Now with a solid off-season behind him, all eyes are now on Längenfelder as he aims to improve on his already impressive back-to-back 3rd place overall championship finishes.

Newcomer to the team, and a widely tipped breakout talent of the 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship, is Marc-Antoine Rossi. The young Frenchman stated it is a dream come true to have joined the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing team. Rossi's winter training in Belgium and Italy, under the guidance of team manager and coach Davide De Carli, has focused on enhancing his performance across different terrains. Living in Rome has brought Rossi closer to his team, creating a supportive family atmosphere. Rossi raced in EMX250 last year and secured his maiden win in the class in Germany. Then at the Grand Prix of France, where he debuted in the MX2 class as a wildcard, he underlined his potential at the highest level with 8-6 scores, also proving that he will be a source of confidence as he enters his first full season.

With the season set to go live on March 10 for the MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina, the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing squad is looking forward to showcasing their hard work, talent, and determination on the global stage, aiming to add more victories and titles to their already impressive record. Let the battle commence!

DE CARLI 2024

Davide De Carli (Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing Team Manager):

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, the feeling within the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing team is very good. Having Jorge, our defending MXGP champion, alongside the incredible talent of Simon Längenfelder in MX2, and welcoming the fresh energy of our new signing, Marc-Antoine Rossi, in MX2, we are excited for an extraordinary year. Each rider brings a unique strength and determination to the team, and together, we share a single goal: to bring the speed, defend our titles, and reach new heights. We've prepared very thoroughly, everyone is feeling in top condition. For sure, the competition is tough, but we are more than ready.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS YAMAHA MOTOR EUROPE AIMS TO UNLEASH FULL POTENTIAL IN 2024 MXGP SEASON

As the reigning MXGP and MX2 Manufacturer’s World Champions, Yamaha Motor Europe is gearing up for what promises to be a thrilling 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship campaign. Building on Yamaha’s previous success and with a dynamic new team structure in place, the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP and MX2 teams are primed to harness the untapped potential of their six factory riders as they gun for both individual and brand glory.

Leading the charge for the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team is former MX2 World Champion Maxime Renaux, who is preparing for his third season aboard the YZ450FM. Despite facing an unlucky setback in 2023, the 23-year-old Frenchman has kept his head up and remains determined to build on his impressive track record of eight Grand Prix victories and 30 podium finishes while vying for the MXGP crown in 2024.

Joining Renaux on the gate is his former MX2 teammate Jago Geerts. The 23-year-old Belgian brings a wealth of talent and potential as he transitions to the YZ450FM, boasting 55 podium finishes, 24 Grand Prix wins, and five MX2 championship medals. Already showing signs of confidence, Geerts aims for consistent progress in his rookie MXGP season.

Rounding out the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP roster for 2024 is Calvin Vlaanderen. Over the past three years, Vlaanderen has demonstrated remarkable progress in MXGP, securing the top spot among satellite riders for the past two seasons. With Yamaha's full support, the 27-year-old South African aims to build on his twelve podium finishes and two Grand Prix wins, striving for even greater success.

In MX2, the new Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 team will feature a familiar line-up of Yamaha stars Thibault Benistant, Rick Elzinga, and Andrea Bonacorsi.

Benistant, with three MX2 Grand Prix victories and twelve podium finishes to his credit, has been labelled a clear title contender. Now entering his fourth season in the class, the 21-year-old French prodigy is bursting with confidence and looks forward to lining up at the season opener with a clean slate and a new opportunity to go for gold.

Gearing up for his second MX2 season, Elzinga aims to use the year of experience gained to contend for podium finishes. The 22-year-old Dutchman showed flashes of brilliance in his debut season and is poised to make further strides in 2024.

Meanwhile, Bonacorsi, the reigning EMX250 Champion, is ready to take on the challenge of competing at the highest level in 250cc racing. Already showing his impressive strength aboard his YZ250FM, the 20-year-old Italian is eager to establish himself as a front runner in the pro ranks.

With a packed schedule of 20 Grand Prix events and 60 races in the FIM Motocross World Championship in 2024, the teams are all set for an intense year of racing. Over the next three weeks, all six riders will put the finishing touches on their pre-season preparations before making the journey to Argentina for the season opener on March 9th and 10th in Villa la Angostura

Alexandre Kowalski
Yamaha Motor Europe Off-Road Racing Manager

“We're looking forward to the upcoming season and the chance to defend Yamaha's manufacturers' world titles in MXGP and MX2, particularly with our new team structure that aims to get the most out of our six factory riders. While our line-up for 2024 remains familiar, with all six riders having been part of the Yamaha Family for the past few years, we’re looking forward to the MXGP debut of our MX2 star Jago Geerts in his rookie season. Alongside him, Calvin Vlaanderen, who has achieved remarkable results as a satellite rider and has long been on our radar, will step up to the challenge. Both Jago and Calvin will join forces with our current Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP title contender, Maxime Renaux, who is determined to fight for the crown. At the same time, MX2 holds its own promise of excitement this year, with Thibault Benistant, Rick Elzinga, and Andrea Bonacorsi leveraging the same team setup that propelled them to European Championship success. Thibault's goal is crystal clear: we believe he has the best shot at contending for the title, while Rick and Andrea can utilize this season to steadily progress towards consistently challenging for podium finishes. Overall, we have full faith in our teams and the strength of our riders this season, and on behalf of Yamaha Motor Europe, I would like to wish them the best of luck in 2024!”

FERRUCCIO ZANCHI | UNKNOWN TALENT

When Team HRC put out the news that they were getting back into a full effort in the MX2 class in 2024, the other teams surely took a deep breath and figured they had a new challenger on the starting gate.

When it was mentioned that 17-year-old Italian Ferruccio Zanchi would be their rider, a rider who had finished fourth in the EMX250 championship of 2023, a lot of eyebrows were raised. Something of an unknown, Zanchi has shown ridiculous speed on the Honda 250 machine and even won his first ever race for HRC in this year’s pre-season.

Now, with a handful of pre-season races to come and probably more testing, you get the idea that this teenager might turn some heads in 2024, similar to when Red Bull KTM signed an unknown rider in Tom Vialle, a handful of years ago. Of course, that relationship ended with two MX2 World championships.

While we can’t be sure Zanchi will have success in the MX2 class of 2024, he is showing potential. For Zanchi, the moment he was approached by HRC was a shock to him, but a dream come true for the young Italian.

“Being picked up by Honda was a big surprise,” Zanchi said. “Because they came to me at the last round in Great Britain and asked if I was interested and I was very surprised. Of course, I wanted to ride for them, and I said yes and then we waited for the word from the Japanese, and it was agreed. We raced yesterday for the first time, and it was good.”

Now, riding for a privateer team in 2023 and then the HRC factory team in 2024, there is a huge jump in machinery, and no doubt, a factory bike will always outdo a privateer machine. It was for Zanchi, very noticeable.

“Yes, a lot different. I was riding KTM last year and the first time I rode the Honda was at the start of January, so I had less than a month to get used to riding the Honda. The bike is incredibly good, and we did some testing before pre-season races, and made some nice changes to the engine and the suspension. We made huge steps with those things, and I really enjoy riding it. I use a lot of torque on the bike and the bike has a lot of torque in the mid-range.”

And having five-time World motocross champion Tim Gajser as something of a mentor under the HRC tent, Zanchi couldn’t ask for a better role model. Gajser, always friendly and helpful to his team-mates, this 17-year-old knows how lucky he is.

“Tim is very helpful, a great rider and also a great guy. Whenever we are training, he is always helping me and I can watch him and see how he does it, because he has a lot of experience, and I can learn a lot from him. I really enjoy it and I am looking forward to the season and find out what I can learn from him.”

So, now as he works his way through the pre-season and eventually arrives in Argentina for the opening round of the 2024 MX2 World championship, Zanchi will feel more than comfortable in the HRC team and can hopefully reach more of his childhood dreams.
