PRADO AND BENISTANT TAKE THE FIRST VICTORIES AT LUGO IN THE RAM QUALIFYING RACES AT THE MXGP OF GALICIA

LUGO (Galicias,Spain) 11 May 2024 – At the scenic and brilliant new venue of Lugo for the MXGP of Galicia, today’s RAM Qualifying Races provided some amazing competition to get the weekend underway! In front of a loud and enthusiastic crowd that turned out mainly to cheer for their hometown hero, the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing star Jorge Prado did not let his supporters down, with a stunning victory that involved passes on two of his main rivals. That was after the first World Championship chequered flag at this circuit was waved for Thibault Benistant of the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 team, but it was so nearly a very different story!

In a fascinating morning of action on a circuit that only local boy and reigning MXGP World Champion Pradohad any prior knowledge of, the world’s fastest Motocross riders were soon cutting their lap times down to get the best possible gate pick. Some riders took their time to gradually reduce their lap times as they learnt the circuit, but the pack looked close on the timing charts in both classes heading into the afternoon’s RAM Qualifying Races.  And all of them were able to come out in full attack mode when the gate dropped!

World Championship leader Tim Gajser put down his marker for Team HRC with the fastest time in Free Practice, with Prado in second. Then in Time Practice it was the turn of Jeffrey Herlings to show his hand for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, flying to the pole position lap, only half a tenth of a second ahead of Gajser!

Herlings used the inside gate to good effect and led into the first corner, but Gajser cut a stunning line out of turn two to grab the lead! The Dutchman was not rolling over, however, and made a brilliant pass to take it back, before the Slovenian used a big, 450-only triple jump into the wave section to retake the advantage that Herlings would not get to take back.

Meanwhile, Prado had been battling with the fast-starting Calvin Vlaanderen, who had fought the Spaniard back to keep third for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP. A decisive move on the second lap allowed Prado to clear the #10 rider and chase down Herlings, and Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre followed him through immediately!

From there, Prado built his momentum with the crowd urging him on through every twist of the throttle! Five laps later, he drove past the KTM talisman to take second, and Febvre would also get past Herlings a lap later. With the fastest lap of the race, Prado closed in on Gajser, and squeezed into the lead just after crossing the finish line to start lap seven!

From there, the lead positions were set until a small mistake from Febvre three laps from the end allowed Herlings to regain third, as Vlaanderen recovered to claim fifth ahead of the Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jeremy Seewer.

The result for Prado, a race where he moved forward better than at any time before in this Championship, was probably more important than just the one-point gain over Gajser, and the series lead is now just 13 points for the Slovenian heading into tomorrow’s main Grand Prix races!

Jorge Prado: “It wasn’t too bad of a start but I think I was around 4th or 5th in the first two laps and there were good battles with some of the guys too but once I made few passes and got to Jeffrey I knew I had to pass straight away. I was checking out the rhythm see how he went. As soon as I saw that they slowed down a bit I made my attacks. I got to Gajser after, made the pass and controlled the race so yeah, I really enjoyed the ride”

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing again saw their riders at the top in MX2, as Kay de Wolf and Lucas Coenen finished 1-2 in both Free and Time Practice, with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s defending Champion Andrea Adamo coming to the line in third.

A terrible start for the red plate holder De Wolf left him buried in the pack, while the holeshot went to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing flyer Sacha Coenen! Returning from injury was Team HRC rookie Ferruccio Zanchi, and all the pent-up aggression bore fruit as he held 2nd from title chaser Simon Laengenfelder, himself racing after surgery on a broken collarbone sustained in Portugal! The German on the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing machine looked in fine form despite the injury, and would finish in fifth position.

Thibault Benistant moved forward into second place by the end of the first full lap, but behind him there was a three-bike pile-up involving Sacha’s teammates Liam Everts and Adamo, as well as Mikkel Haarup for Monster Energy Triumph Racing! There was no catching Sacha Coenen who looked in total command for almost the entire race.  Zanchi also held firm in third. Kay de Wolf was charging through the pack and would eventually get to seventh, losing just two points to Laengenfelder.

On the last few laps, everything changed! Lucas Coenen had been hassling Laengenfelder, and finally moved up to fourth as they took the 2-Lap board, then immediately dived on Zanchi to take third! With half a lap to go, there was heartbreak for Sacha Coenen who crashed in the wooded section out of the lead, and then dropped the bike again as he tried to get going!

Restarting just in front of his brother, Lucas was merciless in getting through to second with his best ride for some time. Sacha would have to console himself with third and forget about what might have been.  He could be a serious threat on Sunday!

It was Benistant, however, who took his first Qualifying victory for well over a year, and with Everts unable to get back into the top ten, the Frenchman reclaims third in the Championship standings, while De Wolf holds an advantage of 28 points and a mission to get a better start tomorrow!

Thibault Benistant: “I was quite patient all the race actually and I was feeling good. I still feel a bit tight but I took a good start which I wanted for a long time. It’s really nice to start at the front and kept pushing until the end and Sacha (Coenen) made a mistake so I can say I was a bit luck yin the end..but I stayed on the wheels and I won so I’m very happy!”

KAWASAKI FACTORY MX2 TEAM FOR 2025

Based at its impressive workshop near the Lommel track in Belgium, the new enterprise will come under the responsibility of existing KRT Manager, Antti Pyrhönen, while team staffing will evolve and expand according to the extra demands of an additional championship.

Initially utilising the direct relationship that the team has with the KMC factory engineers in Japan - including their wealth of design knowledge and engineering insight relating to the production KX250 machine - the KRT MX2 team will be working on an all new specification across the coming months gearing towards a fully developed race machine for 2025 season.

With no decision at this time being made on who may ride for the team, KRT are targeting those with both podium potential allied to the skill to provide accurate feedback during the important pre-season testing phase.

Speaking of the new challenge, Antti Pyrhönen, KRT MXGP Manager,
was in characteristically optimistic mood.
“When I discussed with our Team Principle, Kimi Räikkönen, the possibility to raise our game to another level and enter MX2 he immediately saw the potential and agreed this was our next logical step. We have built up an incredible working relationship with Kawasaki in Japan and we are determined to repay their trust in us by making an impact with this new project”.

For Kawasaki Motors Europe, Race Planning Manager, Steve Guttridge, emphasised the potential of the new initiative in terms of guiding young talent to the very top.
“Having both MXGP and MX2 run by our factory team offers Kawasaki the opportunity to offer young, very talented riders a dream seat in MX2. Being inside KRT means they can also be well prepared for future MXGP duties within a familiar team environment. We want to win World titles with home grown talent; the structure that Antti and Kimi have built alongside our factory staff offers just that”.

Concluding, Shigemi Tanaka, General Manager, Marketing & Sales Division, Kawasaki Motors, Ltd. commented.
“This is an important step for Kawasaki and it reflects our long established ethos of growing and encouraging talent from green shoots to green wins. It is fundamental to our off road philosophy to provide not just hardware in terms of competitive KX machinery but also the “software” historically manifested by our legendary Team Green race and rider support programme.
The best way to lead is by example, so the establishment of this factory attack on MX2 honours within the highly professional and proven race-winning structure of the Kawasaki Racing Team will provide a stable base for rider and championship success. We hope youth riders will see this as something to aspire to and, in turn, to graduate from MX2 experience and success towards MXGP, the very pinnacle of motocross.”

YAMAHA INSIDE MXGP : WAS THIS THE TOUGHEST MUD RACE IN HISTORY?

In the most gruelling of racing environments, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP's newest recruit, Andrea Bonacorsi, made a splash at the fifth round of the MXGP World Championship in Agueda, Portugal, powering his YZ450FM through the mire to start his MXGP career on the cusp of the top-five!

A damp and drizzly week leading into the Portuguese Grand Prix turned torrential just two laps into the opening MXGP race on Sunday afternoon, transforming Agueda's distinctive orange soil into an unforgiving quagmire of mud and muck. The combination of deep ruts and slippery sections tested the skills of even the most seasoned MXGP riders in the world. For 'Bona', as a newcomer to the MXGP class, his 450cc debut could not have been under more challenging circumstances.

{Go inside the MXGP of Portugal raw and unfiltered with Bona during his MXGP debut and the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 team as they storm to a season-best double podium finish with Rick Elzinga and Thibault Benistant finishing second and third, respectively.}

"Moving up to the MXGP class was the biggest decision of my life," Bonacorsi explained. "The Hutten crew were like a family to me, and after Race Two in Arco where I showed that I can run up front, it was difficult to move to MXGP. But when I thought about it, I love riding a 450. The bike! I love it. It suits me much better because of my physique and how big I am, so I can enjoy riding a lot more on the YZ450FM, and I know I can show what I am capable of in the MXGP class on this bike for sure!" he flexed.

Following a strong showing of speed and potential in practice and qualifying, the heavens opened during MXGP Race One, with rain continuing to fall heavily on and off throughout the day, turning the spectacular Agueda circuit into an ugly brown mud bath. With each lap, the track changed, becoming more unpredictable and demanding. The deep ruts turned into tyre traps, threatening to swallow the bikes with every attempt to navigate them. Maintaining balance and finding the perfect line became an unavoidable risk, where a single wrong move could result in a mistake or loss of valuable time. Many riders did not survive; however, the rookie, Bonacorsi, handled it like a veteran, finishing his first-ever MXGP race in sixth.

Race Two required not only physical strength but also mental fortitude. The brutal conditions had the potential to shake the confidence of even the most experienced riders. Remaining focused despite reduced visibility, Bonacorsi showed he could adapt quickly; although he made a few mistakes, as did most of MXGP's elite, he charged home in eighth to secure sixth overall.

"I have to be happy with what I achieved in my first GP as an MXGP rider," Bonacorsi smiled. "I mean, to make the switch from MX2 to MXGP here, with not the easiest track conditions and I still managed sixth overall, I'm very happy with that."

"Andrea's first MXGP race with the team and on the YZ450FM was impressive," Yamaha Motor Europe's Off-Road Racing Manager Alexandre Kowalski applauded. "It was quite impressive that he was this strong and consistent in such challenging conditions. I am looking forward to seeing him confirm his place in, hopefully, drier conditions in races to come. But this was a good debut for him, a good start to his MXGP career, and good for the team as they build their relationship together."

WELCOME TO THE CHAMPION’S BACK YARD FOR THE MXGP OF GALICIA

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 8 May 2024 – It’s just a short drive for the teams this week from the MXGP of Portugal, as the FIM Motocross World Championship explores the new venue of the Circuito Municipal Jorge Prado near the city of Lugo in the north-west corner of Spain for the MXGP of Galicia.  And yes, you read that correctly, the circuit is named after the reigning MXGP World Champion, and that’s because it is located in the area where he grew up and first threw his leg over a motorcycle!

Lugo will become the 18th circuit in Spain to host a Motocross Grand Prix, but the first in the historic Galicia region.  The nearest previous MXGP circuit was La Baneza, where Antonio Cairoli and Ken Roczen won back in 2011.  The five most recent events in Spain have all been at Intu Xanadu Arroyomolinos, including the second round of the 2024 series which was a perfect weekend for Jorge Prado and Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing in MXGP, with Kay De Wolf taking the victory there in MX2 for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.

The WMX Women’s World Motocross Championship will rejoin the tour for its third round, and the series has been a brilliant one so far with victory on home ground for RFME GASGAS Juniors MX Team’s Daniela Guillen in round one, followed by a stunning win in Sardegna for the De Baets Yamaha Team rider Lotte van Drunen.  The pair are locked together in a tie for the Championship lead, and once more the Spanish rider will have a home crowd to cheer her on! Van Drunen, as the most recent race winner, will carry the red plate, and she also loves the atmosphere when she is racing against the home hero! Lynn Valk will also be trying to break the deadlock of the top two after finishing behind them in third at each of the first two rounds.

The EMX125 Championship Presented by FMF series continues with its fourth round of the season, with Fantic Factory Racing EMX125 rider Noel Zanocz from Hungary holding a slender 8-point Championship lead over Racestore KTM Factory Rookies star Gyan Doensen. Spain’s Salvador Perez holds third for the RFME GASGAS MX Junior Team.

The reigning MXGP World Champion Jorge Prado heads to his home town with a white plate fitted to his Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing machine, for the first time since the opening round, after losing the series lead to Team HRC’s Tim Gajser in Portugal. A tough day in the mud for all concerned, but especially Prado, sees the Slovenian with a 14-point gap that the local hero will urgently be looking to hack down and reassert his authority. Kawasaki Racing Team leader Romain Febvre now lies just 18 points further back in third, with Jeffrey Herlings in fourth, another 22 behind the Frenchman. The worrying thing about Portugal for the rest of the pack was that the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing legend seems to be back in a winning mood after taking the chequered flag in race two, and he is starting to get his season together.

After taking his first Grand Prix victory for six years in Portugal, Pauls Jonass lies in fifth place in the series for Standing Construct Honda MXGP, just six behind The Bullet and intent on his mission to stay consistent.

Overall the top contenders have had varied success in Spain, as Herlings has the most among them with 4 victories, two in each class, whereas Prado has two wins, both at Xanadu. Tim Gajser has to look back to his first MXGP title year in 2016 for his only win on Spanish soil, at Talavera de la Reina, but Febvre has yet to win a GP on the entire Iberian Peninsula! The two other winners in Spain that line up for MXGP this weekend include Jonass at Red Sand in 2018, and Valentin Guillod of Team Ship-to-Cycle Honda Motoblouz SR, who won the MX2 class at Talavera in 2015!

As the MXGP of Portugal has proven, Motocross is massively unpredictable and as we move into the second quarter of the season, the anticipated battle between the giants of the sport in MXGP is well and truly still on!

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 252 Points; 2. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 238 Points; 3. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 220 Points ; 4. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 198 Pts; 5. Pauls Jonass (LAT, HON), 192 Pts; 6. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, KAW), 157 Pts; 7. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, YAM), 151 Pts; 8. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, FAN), 149 Pts; 9. Although Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing pilot Kay de Wolf has faced adversity in the previous two rounds of the MX2 World Championship, after winning the first three, he still carries the red plate heading to Galicia. The big question at the top of MX2 is how soon we will see the return of second-placed Simon Laengenfelder of the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing team, as the unfortunate German broke his collarbone in race two at Agueda. The gap at the top is now 30 points, with another 28 going back to the dominant Portugal winner Liam Everts, who has rocketed up the order for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing after missing the opening round due to a pre-season thumb injury.  That’s what two GP wins on the bounce will do for you!

Everts lies just three points ahead of Thibault Benistant, in fourth for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2, then it’s only 14 more back to De Wolf’s teammate Lucas Coenen. Reigning MX2 World Champion Andrea Adamo has been shuffled back to sixth place, and now lies 78 behind the leader. After a fine 2nd overall in Portugal, Benistant’s teammate Rick Elzinga has jumped up from 9th to 7th in the standings.

If Laengenfelder, who won at Xanadu in 2023, doesn’t line up this weekend, then De Wolf would be the only one to race in MX2 at Lugo with a previous win in Spain on his record. That was, of course, the second round of this year’s series.

Whilst the title contenders are more spread out in MX2 than in MXGP, the action on track has been hectic and action-packed all year, and it would take bravery from anybody to predict a winner at this brand new circuit!

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 246 Points; 2. Simon Laengenfelder (GER, GAS), 216 Points; 3. Liam Everts (BEL, KTM), 188 Pts; 4. Thibault Benistant (FRA, YAM), 185 Pts; 5. Lucas Coenen (BEL, HUS), 171 Pts;.  6. Andrea Adamo (ITA, KTM), 168 Pts; 7. Rick Elzinga (NED, YAM), 159 Pts; 8. Mikkel Haarup (DEN, TRI), 154 Pts; 9. Camden McLellan (RSA, TRI). 126 Pts; 10. Sacha Coenen (BEL, KTM), 104 Pts;
