CHAMPIONSHIP LEADERS STRUGGLE AS ADAMO AND FEBVRE TAKE RAM QUALIFYING WINS

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino) 13 April 2024 – The sun shone again for MXGP in the beautiful setting of the Garda mountains for round four, the MXGP of Trentino, and in front of the natural hillsides that were already crammed full of fans, the RAM Qualifying Race wins were taken by new riders for this season! Romain Febvre was victorious in MXGP for the Kawasaki Racing Team, with the MX2 battle being won by home favourite Andrea Adamo as he fended off a late charge from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate Liam Everts to send the Italian fans home in a very happy mood!

Featuring a beautiful retrospective white, pink, and purple livery for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team this weekend, Calvin Vlaanderen topped the time sheets in Free Practice. His speed would carry into Time Practice where he grabbed third position behind Febvre in 2nd. The Frenchman’s late run brought him to within 0.816 seconds of the lead.  However, with a mid-session surge that put him 1.8 seconds clear at the time, Jorge Prado once more took the first gate pick for the afternoon race and looked tough to beat for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing.

As with last week, it was a green bike firing into the lead from the gate as Febvre took the holeshot this time, with Prado and Fantic Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff in hot pursuit! Valentin Guillod was up in 4th early on the Ship-to-Cycle Honda but crashed dramatically after being passed by Team HRC’s Tim Gajser! The Slovenian pleased his many fans present by then moving past the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Jeffrey Herlings.

After a fall in last year’s RAM Qualifying Race at this circuit, Prado had further issues in 2024!  Losing the seat from his machine over the finish line jump, he had to do a full lap stood on the pegs and lost positions dramatically before pulling into the pits where his technicians did their work quickly!

At around half-distance, Gajser managed to leap over Coldenhoff’s head as the Dutchman couldn’t clear the big uphill triple jump after turn two, but the Fantic man held Herlings back to claim his best finish of the year so far in third.

With Prado losing his seat for a second time on the final lap, after working his way back to 17th position, it means that his championship lead over Gajser is more than halved, from 17 down to just 8 points! Febvre’s win, a repeat of the result here last year, pulls the Frenchman into 3rd ahead of Herlings and now lies 41 behind the Spaniard, who will surely look for redemption in Sunday’s main Grand Prix races – not to be missed!

Romain Febvre: “I felt good with a good start too. It’s so important and what we need because on some track we match the speed. Time practice was really close and I knew I had to get a good start. In the end we made it! I made a good gap and how they say I controlled the race. I’m happy and we mark some good points so let’s go for tomorrow! “

It was that red plate holder again in MX2, the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing machine of Kay de Wolf, who was fastest in Free Practice while his teammate Lucas Coenen struggled to just 12th. However, in Time Practice it was the turn of the series leader to taste some dirt, and he had to straighten out his machine before setting a time good enough for 5th place. A final lap dash for Thibault Benistant put the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team leader into pole position for the RAM Qualifying Race.  The Monster Energy Triumph Racing riders, Mikkel Haarup and Camden McLellan, again showed great pace to go 2nd & 4th, with Marc-Antoine Rossi of Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing splitting them in 3rd.

The frantic action continued in the RAM Qualifying Race as the familiar sight of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Sacha Coenen launched into the lead from the start, with his teammate Adamo right on his case! Rick Elzinga pushed past the World Champion briefly on the opening lap, with Everts and Haarup also close behind.  Adamo got back through and chased after Sacha, while Lucas Coenen suddenly started touring and pulled into the pits, so far without an obvious explanation.

De Wolf had to work from outside of the top ten and got through to 6th at the flag, but on lap 7 Adamo was able to launch the big triple jump when Sacha Coenen couldn’t, and in the following corner the young Belgian clipped the Italian’s rear wheel and hit the floor! He would eventually recover to finish 8th.

Simon Laengenfelder moved forward for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing,  passing Haarup in a great cutback move! Then, on the last lap, both riders went past Elzinga, who slipped from third to fifth in the space of two corners! Third for the German, with Haarup fourth, gave him a three-point gain over De Wolf to reduce the gap to 26 points in the chase for the Championship.

Everts showed his best speed so far this year to reel in his teammate in the closing laps, but in the end it was last year’s GP winner and Champion that took his first RAM Qualifying Race win of the season to pass Benistant, who finished 9th after getting stuck on the gate, for 4th in the series. Adamo’s home fans are certainly looking forward to seeing if he can repeat his 2023 victory here tomorrow!

Andrea Adamo: “It was a pretty strange race at the beginning I wasn’t feeling the best but then I went into my rhythm and I thought that it was my time. I passed Sacha as the ones behind were catching up! I’m super happy. The track is not easy to make a difference but I am super happy with my first RAM Qualifying win especially after last weekend and I’m pretty confident for tomorrow!”

BACK TO THE MAINLAND WITH A QUICK TURNAROUND FOR THE MXGP OF TRENTINO

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 10 April 2024 – The 2024 MXGP World Motocross Championship runs in consecutive weekends for the first time as the teams and crews head directly from the island of Sardegna to round four at the beautiful “Il Ciclamino” circuit at Pietramurata between the cities of Arco and Trento in northern Italy for the MXGP of Trentino on 13th and 14th of April!

With an amazing location at the foot of the Garda Mountains, and the manic enthusiasm of both the Italian and travelling Slovenian fans, there is no doubt that this venue is one of the jewels in MXGP’s crown. There have been 19 GP events held in its history since the first in 1987, a 125cc contest won by Italian hero Massimo Contini on an Italian Cagiva machine. The circuit has hosted more Grands Prix in the last decade than any other, having been on the schedule every year since 2013, and running six events across the two years affected by the COVID pandemic.

Three of the major contenders for MXGP glory this year have had a great amount of success in this arena, whilst only one rider in the current MX2 line-up can claim to having won in Trentino.  With incredible crowds and an electric atmosphere, it is one for any MXGP fan’s bucket list, so we certainly hope you can tune in, or better still join us in person for a memorable weekend of racing action!

The EMX125 Championship Presented by FMF joins the main classes in the journey over from Sardegna, with Hungarian prospect Noel Zanocz looking to defend his Championship lead for Fantic Factory Racing EMX125, while the first race winner Gyan Doensen will hope to make up for a crash-affected fourth for Racestore KTM Factory Rookies in race two.

They are joined by the EMX250 series for their second round, as rising Roman star Valerio Lata looks to defend his narrow Championship lead, where he won last year, on home ground for Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors against the BUD Racing Kawasaki of Mathis Valin and the chasing pack!

Another perfect weekend for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s reigning MXGP World Champion Jorge Prado in Sardegna saw him extend his series lead to 17 points, and the only consolation for his main opposition is that they were able to finish directly behind him throughout that weekend. Team HRC’s Tim Gajser lost a minimal amount of points to keep the red plate holder within his sights, and Jeffrey Herlings moved up into third in the standings for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, albeit 49 points behind Prado.

All three men have great records at Trentino. Gajser and Herlings have each won 10 individual races, and 5 overall Grands Prix there, and victory for either will see them set the record for GP wins at the circuit, as they are both level with Italian legend Antonio Cairoli as it stands.  “The Bullet” won MX2 in 2013, ’14, and ’16, plus the MXGP class in both 2018 and the first of the three GPs in 2021. Gajser won in his sole MX2 title year of 2015, then took MXGP victory in 2019, two in 2020, and the last GP he contested here in 2022.  The Honda man usually has a massive swell of support from his home country, as the circuit is around 300km from the Slovenian border. After being knocked out of the early 2023 season with injuries from a big crash at this track, his fans will also return to try and urge him on to more success.

However, if Prado continues his current run of success at each GP so far this year, he will join them all on 5 wins as well, after winning his fourth GP at the venue last season, his first in MXGP after consecutive MX2 victories in 2017, ’18, and ‘19. The Spaniard has won 5 individual races at the track, although he suffered his worst RAM Qualifying Race of the year in 2023, finishing in 10th after a rare poor start and even rarer crash.  He rectified that with 1-3 finishes for the GP win, although Herlings took race two with a stunning charge to claim 3rd overall after a 9th in race one, behind Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP's Maxime Renaux who went 2-2 for 2nd overall.

The RAM Qualifying Race winner was Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre, but his dream Saturday was followed by a nightmare Sunday with a first corner crash in race one and a steady second race to go 12-4 for 7th overall.  The Frenchman has won races here in 2016, 2020, and 2021, but never any better than 2ndoverall, which he claimed in 2016 and the final race in 2020. He has also been third three times at Trentino.

One rider with an excellent record at the circuit, albeit in the Youth and EMX classes, is Mattia Guadagnini.  Very much a local rider just over an hour’s drive from his home town, it’s unclear whether or not Mattia will make his debut for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, but he is on the Entry List and home fans will be hoping he can join MRT Racing Team Beta factory man Ivo Monticelli, as the man from Ancona is the only Italian to have scored points in the class so far this season.  Ivo currently lies 15th in the series.

Pauls Jonass is only 10 points behind Febvre in 5th, and the Standing Construct Honda man will look to build on that at a venue where he last saw the podium in his title year of 2017 in MX2, when he shared the race wins with Prado.  Jeremy Seewer has won a GP in Trentino, the MXGP of Garda Trentino, the third round here in 2021, and his learning with Kawasaki Racing Team will continue as he lies 6th in the points chase.  The only other former GP winner here who lines up in MXGP is Ben Watson, who won the final round in 2020 and looks to lift his MRT Racing Team Beta up from 12th in the standings.

All eyes will be on that lead battle, however, as the big question right now is “Who can stop Jorge Prado?”, and the two five-time World Champions in the class will be raising their hands!

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 174 Points; 2. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 157 Points; 3. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 125 Pts; 4. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 123 Points ; 5. Pauls Jonass (LAT, HON), 113 Pts; 6. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, KAW), 99 Pts; 7. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, YAM), 90 Pts; 8. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, FAN), 83 Pts; 9. The MX2 class has provided some brilliant racing already this year, but so far the top step has continually been occupied by Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing team leader Kay de Wolf. The Dutch teenager has managed to win each GP this season, but there have also been race wins for three other riders. Simon Laengenfelder, who lies 2nd in the points chase for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing,  won the opening race back in Argentina, reigning MX2 World Champion Andrea Adamo won race two in Spain for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, and De Wolf’s even younger teammate Lucas Coenen won the first RAM Qualifying Race of the year, as well as the first GP race in Sardegna. Even though the Dutchman holds a 29-point lead going to Trentino, he knows that his pursuers will look at the hard-pack circuits to come and like their chances on them.

The red-plate holder recorded a consistent 5-4 scorecard in Pietramurata last season, but he has form at the track as he took a fine 2nd overall in 2022. His main challenger this year, Laengenfelder, won both the RAM Qualifying Race and the second GP race, although a lowly 9th in race one kept him off the overall podium.  Lucas Coenen didn’t have the best of days here last year, but he went 1-1 in the EMX125 class at one of the rounds in 2021, and will have been fired up by his speed in Sardegna.

It will be home hero Adamo that will be looking to repeat his victory of last season, which was the first of his career, and he now returns as World Champion and the main source of hope for a home victory in the eyes of his home fans.  There is no doubt that the speed is there and with a 70-point gap to the leader after just three GPs, there is also no doubt that he absolutely needs to climb that top step once again.  He can take confidence that he is the only rider lining up in MX2 who has won an overall GP in Trentino.

Liam Everts completed a 1-2 for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing here in 2023, and he sits equal on points with his other teammate Sacha Coenen after sitting out the first round with a thumb injury. Sixth in the points chase is Mikkel Haarup, who enjoyed one of his 6 career podium finishes at the circuit back in 2022.  His Monster Energy Triumph Racing teammate Camden McLellan sits directly behind him in the table, a single point back, after his first career GP podium in Sardegna.

Beyond their Champion Adamo, local supporters will be looking to get behind Monster Energy Yamaha MX2 rider Andrea Bonacorsi, who won a race at Trentino in the EMX250 division last year, and has had a steady start to his rookie year in MX2. Ferruccio Zanchi will again be sidelined for Team HRC after missing Sardegna due to a mid-week practice crash.

As with the MXGP class, the pack will be hoping to make a dent in the leader’s record of winning every GP so far, and this should result in a fantastic weekend of all-out action!

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 170 Points; 2. Simon Laengenfelder (GER, GAS), 141 Points; 3. Lucas Coenen (BEL, HUS), 124 Pts; 4. Thibault Benistant (FRA, YAM), 106 Points; 5. Andrea Adamo (ITA, KTM), 100 Pts; 6. Mikkel Haarup (DEN, TRI), 96 Pts; 7. Camden McLellan (RSA, TRI), 95 Pts; 8. Marc-Antoine Rossi (FRA, GAS), 80 Pts; 9. Rick Elzinga (NED, YAM), 78 Pts; 10. Sacha Coenen (BEL, KTM), 77 Pts;

PERFECT TRILOGIES FOR PRADO AND DE WOLF, STAYING UNBEATEN IN SARDEGNA

RIOLA SARDO, Sardegna (Italy) 7 April 2024 – The season’s first taste of sandy terrain greeted the stars of the MXGP World Motocross Championships as round three was hosted by the Crossodromo Communale, known locally as “Le Dune” or “Riola Sand”. As well as a tough, ever-shifting surface that carved up throughout the weekend, the physical challenge was amplified by temperatures close to 30 degress Centigrade, testing even the most highly-trained athletes to the maximum.

As in 2023, reigning MXGP World Champion Jorge Prado had taken a dominant win for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing in Saturday’s RAM Qualifying Race, as did his fellow red plate holder Kay de Wolf in the MX2 class for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.  Both of the Championship leaders continued their perfect winning records with their third overall victory in a row, although some classic challengers were on hand to give notice that they are ready to catch them if they slip up.

The crowd were treated to a stunning morning of racing in both the WMX Women’s World Motocross Championships, won by Lotte van Drunen of the De Baets Yamaha MX-Team, and the EMX125 European Championships Presented by FMF, won by Hungarian Noel Zanocz for Fantic Factory Racing EMX125. Then the main course of MX2 and MXGP was served, piping hot, in a gruelling test of both man and machine.

As in Saturday’s RAM Qualifying Race, Jorge Prado was beaten to the Fox Holeshot Award of race one by Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jeremy Seewer, but a quick inside move into the second corner saw the reigning World Champion back in his usual leading position.  Team HRC’s Tim Gajser made a quick move past the Swiss rider in turn four and Pauls Jonass took his Standing Construct Honda through into third at the same time!

The two Honda men set after chasing the Red Plate Holder, while last year’s winner, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, had started outside the top five and had to haul his way through the pack.  This he did to great effect, reaching third place by lap six, but at that point the leading pair were far off into the distance.

Seewer fell dramatically after five minutes, but would recover to finish 11th, while his teammate Romain Febvre, consigned to the far outside of the start gate after being unable to finish Saturday’s race, worked his way up to 6th place with a series of passes.  Jonass slipped to 5th behind the Fantic Factory Racing pilot Glenn Coldenhoff in the closing laps.

At this time it looked like Gajser was closing in on Prado, getting to within two seconds of the Spaniard, but was never allowed to get closer as the champ took yet another race win.

Race two again saw Seewer fast out of the gate, but Prado was right there immediately to just edge ahead over the Fox Holeshot Award line.  Herlings railed around the Kawasaki man in turn two and now it was “The Bullet” who had the task of challenging Prado.  Behind him, JM Racing Honda stand-in Tim Edberg was briefly up into 4th, before Jonass and Gajser pushed past early on.  Febvre had to charge once more, nearly crashing in a dramatic moment where he nearly collided with JK Racing Yamaha’s Isak Gifting on the take-off of one of the biggest jumps on the track.

After 16 minutes, Herlings had got to within striking distance of Prado and was hoping to uncork some of his old magic, but the Dutchman just pushed the front end too hard into a left-hand corner and was suddenly on the ground!  Gajser accepted the gift of 2nd place, which kept the Championship damage to a minimum, but the leader was off the hook and cruised to his fourth straight GP race win.

The Slovenian fell on the final lap, but he had enough time to pick himself up and still claim 2nd ahead of Herlings, Jonass, Febvre, and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Calvin Vlaanderen.  Calvin’s guest teammate for the weekend, FIM World Sand Races Champion Todd Kellett, ran as high as 13th before a small crash put him back to 16th at the flag for his first Grand Prix points since 2021.

Prado’s 41st career Grand Prix win now puts him 17 points clear of Gajser, and Herlings’ first podium of the season has moved him up to third in the standings.  Will the strong fan support that Gajser always gets at the MXGP of Trentino spur him on to challenge the Champion next weekend?  He certainly needs to start clawing the points back, as does anyone else with eyes on his title!

Jorge Prado: “I’m in a good moment right now, I’m feeling very good on the bike and we do a great work with the team. I’m so happy to be winning here in the sand again as it’s been a long time since I got an overall in the sand. I was very close last year few times but I guess now you can call me the ‘Sand Man’ again!”

Tim Gajser: “I mean it was a consistent weekend so I have to be happy with that. We take quite good points for the championship. I didn’t feel that good the whole weekend as I was struggling a bit with the bike set up but anyway, I’m happy to finish on the podium. Now sand is done and we go to Arco (Trentino) and I’m looking forward to be there with so many fans. I want to say a huge thank you to all my team as everybody is working super hard and I thank everybody around me and all the fans!”

Jeffrey Herlings: “It’s good as every GPs it’s getting better. From Argentina to Sardegna I improved every time. Especially after the crash of yesterday in the warm-up and my sore ribs but i make no excuses, third was all I had for today but I feel like we’re getting better and better so let’s keep on going.”

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s red plate holder Kay de Wolf, and his teammate Lucas Coenen, had dominated the timesheets leading up to the racing, although the Dutchman had extended his Championship lead with victory in the RAM Qualifying Race. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Sacha Coenen took his third Fox Holeshot Award of the season in race one on Sunday, and looked intent on keeping the lead for longer than before, but he couldn’t resist the unstoppable force of De Wolf who launched his machine off the finish line jump further than Sacha to lead at the start of lap three!

It was starting to look ominous for the rest, until Lucas made a swift pass on his brother during lap four, and proceeded to reel in his teammate!

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo battled with the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing team leader Simon Laengenfelder, as Sacha Coenen fell from 3rd on lap nine.  The position was gratefully taken by Camden McLellan, having his best weekend yet for Monster Energy Triumph Racing.

Twenty minutes into the race saw some mistakes creeping into the leader’s riding as his teammate drew near, and on lap thirteen De Wolf ran slightly high on the Pit Lane corner, giving Lucas the half-chance he needed to fire past without a second invitation!  He then set some blazing lap times to score his first GP race win of the season.  McLellan stayed in third, holding off the charge from Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider Thibault Benistant.  The Frenchman dropped the bike on the last lap, however, and would finish 10th, as Adamo and Laengenfelder inherited 4th & 5th.

De Wolf looked a little more concerned on the start line of race one, but while Sacha Coenen again grabbed the Fox Holeshot Award ahead of Adamo and Laengenfelder, Kay pulled a stunning move around turn two to catapult himself past all of them and into the lead! Mikkel Haarup was having no such fun, however, picking up his Triumph in the first corner, just as he did in race one.  The Dane would recover well to an eventual 9th.

Lucas Coenen saw his teammate start to disappear, and swiftly dispatched both his brother and Laengenfelder to move into 2nd by the start of the first full lap, although the German did resist by briefly moving back ahead.  Sacha dropped the bike from 4th at the ten minute mark, promoting Adamo, who chased after Laengenfelder again!

Incredibly, Lucas got close to Kay, but finally pushed just a little too hard and hit the floor in a banked right-hand corner!  Laengenfelder was promoted briefly, but again got passed by the Belgian before the finish. He would also lose 3rd to the charging Adamo, but the Italian made a mistake on the corner before Pit Lane, and blasted down the back of the mechanics’ area to maintain his position.  The rules state that a rider must come to a stop at some point in Pit Lane, so this move led to a disqualification for the reigning World Champion, costing him an overall podium position.

This left Laengenfelder third in the race ahead of Adamo’s teammate Liam Everts and McLellan, whose fifth place was enough for third overall, making it the second podium for the Triumph team in their first three rounds!

De Wolf took the chequered flag 11 seconds clear of his teammate, which gave him the overall victory once more.  Lucas Coenen had to be satisfied with his first overall podium of the season, and a move up to third in the standings. Laengenfelder’s 4th overall leaves him 29 points behind De Wolf and the closest chaser in the Championship.  He will welcome a return to harder surfaces in the GPs to come, and this MX2 season is only just beginning to develop!

Kay De Wolf: ”Lucas was doing also an amazing job in the second race. He really kept me  . Three in a row is amazing and hopefully we can keep this momentuk going into next week and we just keep aiming for a podium that’s the main goal. I l;ook forward for Trentinoand I can’t thank the team enough for this one!”

Lucas Coenen ”First race was perfect as  I managed to get Kay in the end. In the second race I had a bad start but managed to get back in his wheel but I made a stupid tipover, I wanted to follow him like I did in race one but this mistake put me to where I am now. The win is coming though and the first podium of the season is not bad.”

Camden McLellan: “I’m not feeling very great right now but I’m very happy and I can’t thanks Monster Energy Triumph Racing  crew enough. They took a chance on me and it’s paying off as I’m getting better every weekend. I want to thank also Vinc (Bereni), my two mechanics. It was a long long weekend and long second race and I’m feeling it but I’m happy
