Herlings celebrates his 100th GP win in Sardinia while Geerts is a back to back winner!

RIOLA SARDO (Sardinia) 26 March 2023 – And like that, the MXGP of Sardegna is over!

What a sensational weekend it has been in the tough sand of Riola Sardo.

The 3rd edition of the MXGP of Sardegna hold all its promises with an amazing fight for the podium in both MXGP and MX2. In the end it was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings who celebrated his 100th win in MXGP in spectacular fashion in front of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff and Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado.

In MX2, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts won a back-to-back GP after his victory in Argentina while Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf clinched the second place of the podium in front of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Thibault Benistant

In the first MXGP race in Sardinia, the FOX Holeshot was taken by Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer after a great start although Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado quickly took the lead. Prado would go on to dominate the race pushing his lead to 10 seconds at time giving him some nice cushion until the end of the race.

Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen who was 8th on lap 1 made a charge early on to see the back Herlings on lap 4. Herlings 4th and Vlaanderen 5th at that time would follow each other until the end. They both capitalised on Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff who was 3rd until lap 9 when he made a mistake to move down behind them to 5th.

Few laps later it was the turn of another Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team rider Jeremy Seewer who was 2nd since lap 1 to crash on lap 11 and move down to 6th until the end. Herlings and Vlaanderen would go on to 2nd and 3rd to keep those places until the end as Herlings managed to keep Vlaanderen attacks unsuccessful.
Coldenhoff down in 5th position on lap 9 found himself just in front of his teammate Maxime Renaux who was 6th since lap 5. With Seewer’s crash on lap 11 the three Monster Energy Yamaha riders stuck together with Coldenhoff 4th, Renaux 5th and Seewer 6th.  This didn’t stop Renaux to make a clever move on Coldenhoff over 3 turns. Renaux and Coldenhoff, 4th and 5th respectively would keep this order until the end.

Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Brian Bogers made a solid race going from 9th on lap 1 to 7th without being overtaken along the way. SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery’s Alberto Forato was another rider oscillating around the 10th place until lap 12, but got to 8th when JM Honda Racing’s Brent Van Doninck 7th at the time made a mistake to lose few places down to 9th. Forato and Van Doninck would settle for 8th and 9th respectively.

Red Bull GASGASG Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini was 9th on lap 1 and moved down just outside the top 10 from lap 10 until the very last lap when passed Romain Febvre (11th in the end) for the 10th position.

MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina winner Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez unfortunately crashed and would not finish the race.

Race 2 was one of the most eventful races so far. While Febvre took the FOX Holeshot, it was Coldenhoff who made a magnificent first lap to get himself in front and would never let the second too close to him.

The second place looked promised to Febvre as he overtook Seewer on lap 2 to keep this position for 14 laps. However Jeffrey Herlings had other plans. The ‘bullet’ made a heroic race. After a bad start, he was 14th after few turns but he was on a mission overtaking nearly everyone in front of him. He quickly found himself 7th behind Prado 6th on lap 3 and finally found an opportunity on lap 9 to overtake the Red Plate holder.

No one could resist Herlings as lap after lap he overtook Vlaanderen on lap 9 to get 5th, on lap 11 he got the better of Seewer for 4th. This is when things spiced up with 2 laps to go as Herlings closed on Renaux in 3rd and Febvre 2nd.

A three-way battle ensued when in turn the three riders tried to make a charge on the other two with Renaux passing Febvre and Herlings passing Renaux for few turns to see Febvre not giving up easily and took back the 2nd place. All of this in a matter of one lap. Eventually Herlings got the better of the two Frenchmen and even push for the 1st place but it was too late and settled for 2nd.

Renaux got also the better of Febvre at the same time of Herlings and finished 3rd while Febvre ende up 4th.

Vlaanderen made another solid race and was constantly into the top 6 to finally finishing 5th just in front of Prado and Seewer, 6th and 7th respectively. While Prado hovered over the 6th place throughout the race, Seewer was 4th between lap 3 and 11 and after few mistakes moved down the leaderbord to finished 7th.

Van Doninck was similarly to the first race did manage to stay in the top 10 throughout the whole race and got to 8th on lap 3 to ride in this position until the finish line. Forato, stayed also consistent to end up 9th while Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Pauls Jonass managed to stay in the top 10.

Ruben Fernandez was one rider that didn’t capitalise on his first win in Argentina as the Team HRC’s rider crashed few times and could not get his flow over the weekend, and finished 16th overall.

In the end, Jeffrey Herlings with his showing in race 2 grabbed his first GP win since 2021 reaching his 100th GP win. Glenn Coldenhoff on the second march of the podium with his win on race 2 while Prado maintains his Red Plate with 100 points thanks to his 3rd place on the podium coupled with his RAM Qualifying Race win. Herlings second in the Championship with 93 points while Maxime Renaux is 3rd level with Febvre on 78 points.

Jeffrey Herlings: “I’m very happy with this win! I didn’t have the best starts but I push myself and it was tough because the track was very fast but I was feeling good and I kept pushing. I managed to get up to second in race 2. I want to improve on my starts as well to be even better for the next round”

Glenn Coldenhoff: “Since the moment I went on the new bike I felt so good. The bike is fast and rides well over the whole track. I’m happy with getting the podium after a rough start in Argentina. I felt very good here the whole weekend. The second race went well as I pushed at the start to get in front and then I felt comfortable. 2nd in the GP overall and 1st podium so I’m very happy how it went”

Jorge Prado: “I am happy with this weekend. Winning the RAM Qualifying Race and the first race is really good, and of course I would have liked to win the second race too but I’m very happy to have the Red Plate. Hopefully I will hopefully get a good result in Switzerland.”

In MX2, Jago Geerts took the FOX Holeshot and took the lead quickly. The top three riders, Geerts, Laengenfelder and De Wolf took off to increase the gap behind them.

On lap 2 Geerts made a mistake and found himself 3rd as Laengenfelder took the lead in front of De Wolf for 4 laps. However, De Wolf as a sand specialist did manage to take the lead on lap 5 as Laengenfelder made a mistake and he kept it until the end to win the race.

Laegenfelder went down to 3rd after his mistake with Geerts 2nd. But Another mistake on lap 6 from Geerts meant that Laengenfelder could sit 2nd. But Geerts picked up the pace and made a move on lap 11 and kept his advantage until the end with Laengengfelder staying 3rd.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Thibault Benistant displayed a solid racing throughout the whole race after turning lap 1 in 6th. He never got overtaken and continuously pushed forward behind Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Everts. They both overtook on lap 7 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo who was 4th. Benistant 5th passed Everts too on lap 11 to finish 4th.

Everts was unfortunate to crash on lap 13 while he was 5th and ended up 9th. Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen also went up the leaderboard after getting to 9th over the first two laps. He made his way up to an encouraging 6th place for the rookie.

Behind him F&H Kawasaki MX2 Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Roan Van de Moosdijk found themselves 7th and 8th respectively on lap 1 and would oscillate to finish the race at the same place.

Finally WZ Racing’s Oriol Oliver kept his 10th position the whole way through.

In Race 2, was actually Oriol Oliver who took the FOX Holeshot, then Jago Geerts made his way to the top on lap 1 passing Kay De wolf and showed great control to keep De Wolf 2nd the whole race too at bay.

Benistant also managed to grab the 3rd spot during the whole race although he had to battle with Lucas Coenen towards the end. However, several mistakes from Coenen meant that Benistant could ride away without much trouble over the last part of the race. Coenen kept his 4th place until the end too.

The 5th place was completely open with Van de Moosdijk, Adamo and Laengenfelder fighting for the spot over the full race. Everts who finished 8th in the end was also involved in that battle until lap 5 when he moved down to 8th and stayed in that place until the end.
Laengenfelder took an option on the 5th place between lap 5 and 13 but it was the determination of Van de Moosdijk that paid off in the end as he put pressure on Laengenfelder who stalled on a turn on lap 14. Van de Moosdijk and Adamo would pass the German to finish 5th and 6th respectively while Laengenfelder had to settle for 7th.

Horgmo had another good race and showed that he can compete in the top 10 as he only had to battle with Oriol over the laps 3 and 4 and kept his 9th place until the end. Oriol ended up 11th after TEM JP253 KTM Racing Team’s Jan Pancar overtook him on lap 10 and kept the 10th position until the end.

Jago Geerts: “It was a good start again and after the first lap I moved up to the lead and De Wolf was pushing me the whole race but I managed to keep my lines the whole race. It is now 2 GP wins now so it I’m happy.”

Kay de Wolf: “We came here to get a podium, and I felt very good. In the first race it was great to get the win. In the second I kept pushing until the end so it was a shame to finish behind Jago as we came for the podium, I am second so overall I am very happy.”

Thibault Benistant: “Today was good even if the riding was not easy on this sand. I tried to follow the guys upfront but they were very quick but I tried to push and in the end I’m satisfied to be on the podium.”

Daniela Guillen on top of the first WMX Round of the Season

RIOLA SARDO (Sardinia) 26 March 2023 – The first round of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship has concluded in Riola Sardo, and it was RFME GasGas WMX Team’s Daniela Guillen who secured the overall victory of the Grand Prix of Sardegna.

We saw plenty of action with some amazing racing from some of the favourite riders of the 2023 season including DRT Kawasaki’s Courtney Duncan and Daniela Guillen but also exciting performances from the young rider Lotte Van Drunen on her first full WMX season.

In the first WMX Race of the weekend, Nancy Van De Ven of Ceres 71 Racing made a speedy start and was on her way to pass the first turn ahead but crashed and try to get back racing but race 1 was finished before it started for the current World Champion.
This was the moment for young talent Lotte Van Drunen to get the lead to never give it up showing a very confident racing as she finished 30 seconds ahead of Daniela Guillen. The Spanish rider was set on the second place displaying a solid race throughout. Too far to put pressure on Van Drunen she stayed second.

Courtney Duncan did not have the best start based on her standards and found herself 8th on lap 1 but the three-time WMX World Champion showed her experience and speed as she quickly moved up to sixth after lap 2. She would go on to pass both Shana Van Der Vlist and Britt Jans-Beken on lap 4 to get to 3rd and kept this position until the end.

Van Der Vlist and Jans-Beken battled throughout race 1 as the two Dutchwomen were never able to get a clean advantage on each other. After a give and take between lap 3 and 6, things settled for Van Der Vlist to finish 4th in front of Jans-Beken 5th.

Behind them Amandine Verstappen managed to regularly move up the order from 10th on lap 1 to finish 6th in front of Charli Cannon who ended 7th after an even bigger climb from the 14th place on lap 1. Behind them, Fantic Maddii Factory Racing’s Lynn Valk managed to get to 9th after an average start.

In Race 2, while Giorgia Blasigh took the lead briefly after a great start but it was Nancy Van de Ven who took the lead after few turns as she avoided any mishaps on the first turn.

However, Guillen found a rhythm and make her move on Van De Ven on lap 2 to take the lead and never give it up.

Van De Ven did manage to keep her 2nd place and tried to stick with Guillen but the Spanish was too quick. Valk was behind on 3rd place from lap 2 to 5 but was under threat from Van Drunen. The winner of race 1, did not start the best way as she was 7th after lap 1, although she let her speed talk and moved up the rank quickly. 4th already in lap 2 Van Drunen reduced the gap with Valk to eventually overtake Valk on lap 6. Van Drunen even pushed to be within 1 second of Van De Ven in the last lap but kept her 3rd place.

Valk after getting passed by Van Drunen, had to also give up on the 4th position to Duncan on lap 9 to remain 5th while Duncan had a solid race to end up just outside the podium in 4th.

Martine Hughes put a great effort as she went from 11th on lap 1 to end up in 6th position as she battle with Jans-Beken on lap 8. Jans-Beken settled for 7th in the end. JK Racing Yamaha’s Charli Cannon had a rollercoaster of a race as she went from 5th on lap 1 to 12th on lap 3. However the Australian did manage to pick up the pace and finish8th just in front Fontanesi in 9th.

Finally, Van Der Vlist, after finding herself to 8th place between lap 7 and 9 went down the rank to finish at the 10th place.

In the end, Daniela Guillen was on top of the podium in front of Lotte Van Drunen 2nd who started her season with a bang and 3rd was Courtney Duncan with two solid races over the weekend. The Round of Sardinia was also marked by the return of six-time World Champion Kiara Fontanesi to the competition after more than a year. For her first round she managed to get 8th overall on home soil.

Daniela Guillen: “I’m so happy, I don’t believe it. I didn’t have the best start but then I found my rhythm and raced well. I also want to thank my team and my sponsors.”

The Dunes of Riola Sardo benefit to Jorge Prado and Jago Geerts during the RAM Qualifying Races

RIOLA SARDO (Sardinia) 25 March 2023 – Day one at the MXGP of Sardegna has ended with some memorable RAM Qualifying Races in both MXGP and MX2 categories which were dominated by RedBull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts.

A sunny day coupled with the now well-known sandy track of Riola Sardo made for some challenging conditions for the riders who cannot lose one moment of focus as we witnessed during this first day.

Alongside the FIM Motocross World Championship races, we also saw the first races of the WMX and EMX250 categories which were won by and Lotte Van Drunen and Andrea Bonacorsi respectively.

The day was completed by the brand-new Paddock Show in front of number of fans who were able to be in close proximity with the stars. The guests were the winners of the RAM Qualifying Races' Jago Geerts and Jorge Prado, invited along with Andrea Adamo, Kiara Fontanesi and Calvin Vlaanderen.

In a remake of the first round in Argentina, it was Jorge Prado who dominated the race through and led from start to finish again. The second place was also devoted to Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff who delivered a strong performance over the whole race keeping at bay in turn RedBull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha’s Calvin Vlaanderen and Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez. Coldenhoff eventually held his ground to finished second and grabbed 9 points.

The third place was very disputed but while Herlings found himself third early on, he had to be patient as went down the order to 5th on lap 7 although the Bullet capitalised on mistakes from Vlaanderen and Fernandez to get back up to third in the last 2 laps.

Brent van doninck from JM Honda Racing was one rider who displayed strong racing as he methodically went up the leaderboard from 6th to 4th while never get overtaken. Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre raced similarly to van doninck as he followed him throughout race to finish 5th.

Vlaanderen finished 8th in the end although he showed some great speed and was fighting for the second spot as he closed on Coldenhoff when he suddenly crashed on lap 9, losing along the way precious points. Fernandez followed the same path as he was battling with Coldenhoff to end up crashing as well and finishing 6th.  In between them was Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer who stayed pretty consistent to navigate his to the 7th place.

RedBull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini ended at the 9th place while Benoit Paturel from De Baets Yamaha MX-Team made a very good race to end up in with one point and the 10th place and staying the whole race within the top 10.

Jorge Prado: “It was a very good day, another RAM Qualifying win and more points gained. I felt already good in the morning and I knew I had to get a good start to ride in front. I managed to put a gap between the second and keep it so I am very happy with this racing today”

In RAM MX2 Qualifying Race, it was a similar fate than MXGP for the top place as Jago Geerts led from lap 1 to win his second RAM Qualifying Race in a row. Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay De Wolf who is known as a sand specialist was one rider who showed great determination as he passed Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Thibault Benistant on the first lap to then set his eyes on Simon Laengenfelder from RedBull GasGas Factory Racing over the next few laps. De Wolf eventually made a great overtake on the German to chase after Geerts for the lead. Although he settled for second in the end.

Laengenfelder did keep his third position after that even if Benistant got close to him towards the end. Benistant raced in 4th position after lap 1 until the end as he was not able to pass Laengenfelder and had to defend his place in the end to F&H Kawasaki MX2 Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo.

The 5th position was held the whole way by Kevin Horgmo who kept RedBull Factory Racing’s Liam Everts at bay while making a charge on Benistant at the end. Everts comfortably kept the 6th place.

While Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen had a similar racing story keeping his 7th place after the first lap until the end, Andrea Adamo from RedBull KTM Factory Racing was eying a move on Coenen but had to settle for 8th.

Finally, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Roan Van de Moosdijk got into the points as he moved up to 9th on lap 3 while Rick Elzinga from Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team moved down from 8th to 10th to fight this position with SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery’s Cornelius Toendel during few laps to hold his ground in the end in 10th.

Jago Geerts: “Again a good race for me, Kay de Wolf was also pushing but I felt good on the track and I had a good pace. Today, riding felt very good. Even though this sand track is rough, I really like it”

MXGP Ready for the First European Stop in Sardinia

RIOLA SARDO (Sardegna) 22 March 2023 – The FIM Motocross World Championship lands in Sardinia this weekend for the second round of the season and will head to Riola Sardo for the third edition in the row of the MXGP of Sardegna.

The island of Sardinia is an important site for motocross as it becomes a training hub during the winter preparation for many riders and teams. The circuit of Riola Sardo, which will be the first European stop of MXGP in 2023, is also a well-known circuit among riders and the whole paddock as it used to host pre-season international races.

This weekend will also see the supporting classes join the festivities with the FIM Women's Motocross World Championship and the FIM Motocross European Championship EMX250. It will be the first round of the season for these categories.

In WMX, six-time World Champion MX Fonta Racing Team’s Kiara Fontanesi will be making her come back to the competition and will join the current World Champion Ceres 71 Yamaha’s Nancy Van de Ven along with three-time World Champion DRT Kawasaki’s Courtney Duncan and Fantic Factory Maddii’s Lynn Valk. The 2023 WMX season is guaranteed to be really competitive.

In EMX250, the 2022 EMX125 European Champion Fantic Factory Maddii’s Cas Calk will be one to watch in Sardinia after stepping up in EMX250, along with the Junior 125 World Champion Hutten Metaal Yamaha’s Ivano Van Erp.

In 2022, Riola Sardo hosted the 8th round of the season. While at that time Team HRC’s Tim Gajser won six out of seven GPs and dominated the Championship, it was Team Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing‘s Calvin Vlaanderen who defied all the odds to display a dominant performance winning both races and clinching the first GP of his career in MXGP. This was in front of Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff.

Without the current World Champion Tim Gajser but with the comeback of the “bullet” Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, this new season is now underway as we are coming into the second round. We saw in Argentina on the opening round Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez who celebrated his first GP victory under his new colours winning the first Grand Prix of his career, with a 5-1 that could have easily been an even better result without a crash late in the race 1. Behind him, on the second step of the podium was Herlings with a 4-2 who proved that despite 1 year without competition, we can still count on the five-time World champion to play the top roles. Jorge Prado finished 3rd in the overall. His 1-6 was embellished by grasping the 1st place in the RAM Qualifying Race adding 10 points toward the championship rank. This extra 10 points counting for the championship gave Prado the Red Plate coming into Riola Sardo.

Just outside the podium was 2015 World Champion Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre who displayed 2-5 and showed he is back on form after missing the first half of last season. Then Pauls Jonass with 6-4 started the season very well riding for the top spots throughout the 2 races and finishing 5th.

The two teammates from Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP Team, Maxime Renaux and Jeremy Seewer with a 3-9 and 17-3 respectively, both had a similar trajectory in Villa La Angostura with a strong heat each coupled with another one less successful and stained by a crash. 6th and 7th in the GP they will be ready to score a make up for it with a maximum point in Sardinia.

Other riders like Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini started well in the Qualifying Race finishing 2nd, did not quite managed to capitalise during the races but still deliver some encouraging results with a 10-8 and 8th overall. The Italian rider will be one to compete in front of home fans which will definitely giving him a boost to get to the top spots. SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery’s Alberto Forato is another Italian rider that could benefit from the local fans to get into this top 10 after ending just outside of it in Argentina with a solid 11th place. The MXGP of Sardegna could well be the perfect place for them to increase their points tally in the beginning of the season.

Last year, by the time we arrived at Riola Sardo, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts and Tom Vialle both won 3 GPs and were at the top of the championship and it was Vialle who clinched the win in front of Geerts and his teammate Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Thibault Benistant.

Jago Geerts sent a huge message to the concurrence in the opening round of this season with a perfect hat-trick; topping the RAM Qualifying Races, Race 1 and Race 2, racking up 60 points, the maximum points possible. The experience of the three-time Vice World Champion showed as he battled against his teammate Benistant throughout race 1 and resisting the assault of the Frenchman until the end.

Second on the podium, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo has been a model of regularity with a 3-3 and showing great speed throughout the whole weekend. The Italian rider will have the home advantage this weekend in Sardinia as he will push to get his first Grand Prix win of his career in MX2. Benistant, one of the favourites of the season, had to settle for the 3rd place on the podium with a 2-8. Both riders will come into the second round with plenty of confidence, ready to show that they have all the qualities get to the top spot.

Another solid performance was the one of F&H Kawasaki MX2 Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo with a 5-2 and finishing 4th in the GP. Just behind him was the rookie Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Rick Elzinga who did not wait long to be disputing the first roles on in Argentina. The dutchman finished the GP at the 5th place with a really good 7-4.

Then finishing 6th 7th and 8th an interesting trio composed of Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Roan Van de Moosdijk, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Simon Laegenfelder and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf who all had the speed to be at the high-end of the table but were unfortunate with crashes which hindered their results. However, in Argentina they showed that we will have to count on them this season to disrupt the hierarchy in MX2. The third rider of Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing Lucas Coenen has shown great promises on his first MX2 GP in Argentina as he took the FOX Holeshot in race 1 before crashing and not finishing the race but got back to 9th in race 2. He has the speed and will definitely be a serious contender this season.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Everts also showed flashes of his talented and that he will be a contender already in Sardinia as he grabbed the 5th place in race 1, while a crash early in the second heat stopped him to get a much better place in the overall (9th), although he did perform very well in the RAM Qualifying race with a 4th place.
