MATTERLEY BASIN (United Kingdom) 4 October 2024 – Infront Moto Racing is thrilled to announce that the 78th Edition of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations will be held in USA, from the 3rd to the 5th of October 2025! For the sixth running of this event on American soil, the host venue will be the spectacular Ironman Raceway just outside Crawfordsville, only an hour’s drive from the Motorsports Mecca of Indianapolis in the state of Indiana.

Now the brilliant facility of Ironman Raceway joins that illustrious list, named after the late GNCC ATV Champion Bob ‘Ironman’ Sloan, who hailed from the area and was an inspiration for the building of the circuit, as well as the off-road enduro-style facility nearby.  The land surrounding the track itself is huge and flat, perfect for camping and parking, but the actual circuit is anything but level, with major elevation changes a key feature. Some of the biggest and steepest uphill sections in American Motocross, including the mighty Godzilla step-up, help to form an action-packed lap which will both challenge and excite the best riders on the planet!

The USA holds the record for the most team victories in the history of the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations, with 23 in total, despite only truly joining the competition in the 1970s.  The first ‘Nations’ in the USA was at Unadilla in 1987, in the middle of a period of dominance for the home team.  Further home victories were taken in 2007 at Budd’s Creek, 2010 at Lakewood, and in 2022 at RedBud, which avenged the only American loss on home soil, which was to Team France in 2018 at the same venue.

Ironman Raceway has hosted a round of the AMA National Motocross Championship each season since 2014, and on seven occasions has seen the final round of the series play out there.  American Eli Tomac clinched his first two National 450cc titles at the venue, and Australian Jett Lawrence not only clinched his first two US 250cc titles there, but also completed his perfect 450cc season in 2023, with his brother Hunter Lawrence taking the 250cc title on the same day.  KTM’s Chase Sexton also won his National title at Ironman this season.

MXGP fans will know the venue well, as the site of Jeffrey Herlings’ famous double victory in 2017, and regular ‘Nations’ riders Ken Roczen, Jo Shimoda, Tom Vialle, and Dylan Ferrandis have also put their names onto the winner’s trophies in the past. 2024 Team USA rider Aaron Plessinger has won twice there in the 250cc class, but Tomac and Jett Lawrence are tied for the most National wins at the circuit with three apiece.

MATTERLEY BASIN (United Kingdom) 4 October 2024 – The media day at the 2024 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations began with the welcoming Press Conference and the Ballot to determine the starting grid for the RAM Qualifying Races scheduled for Saturday.

Friday's activities commenced with a warm welcome Press Conference, featuring Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo, FIM/CMS Director Antonio Alia Portela and Monster Energy FIM MXoN Organizer Steve Dixon, who shared insights about the preparations for this weekend's proceedings.

Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo: “Welcome everybody to Matterley Basin for the 2024 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations. It is great to be back at Matterley Basin for the third time, we were here in 2006 and  of course in 2017. The MXoN is the biggest off-road event of the year and the most exciting event of the year. It's an event where the riders, ride and fight for their country, not just for their personal targets. And it's a race that gives us always big surprises, big emotions and big drama. We hope that the weather will be kind to us, and that everybody will enjoy a fantastic weekend of racing. I would like to thank Steve Dixon most of all, for all the effort he has been putting in. Without Steve then for sure Matterley Basin would not be happening.  I wish everyone a safe and successful weekend of Motocross, at the home of Motocross where the sport was born, and I’m sure it will be a fantastic event.”

After the press conference, the teams gathered in the media centre for the official ballot to define the starting grid for tomorrow’s qualifying races.  First team out of the draw was Romania, with a lowly number 28 position.  The first of last year’s podium teams was Italy, and they were grateful for pick #5.  Reigning Champions France got a decent #12, while double MXGP World Champion Jorge Prado will be very happy with Team Spain’s fourth pick!

Germany have a tough position with the final pick on the gate, and team USA not much better in P24. The Netherlands got #8, and with just four on the board and the #1 still available, Team Switzerland were dismayed to draw number 35!

The number 1 position finally went to one of the top contenders, Team Belgium!  One observer was heard to mention that “They used up all of their bad luck before the race!”

This unique annual event sees the three best riders from each of the top Motocross nations on the planet, and the line-up this year is truly mouth-watering – Jorge Prado, Eli Tomac, Tim Gajser, Jett Lawrence, Jeffrey Herlings, Hunter Lawrence, Romain Febvre, Aaron Plessinger, Jeremy Seewer, Ken Roczen, Maxime Renaux, Kay de Wolf, Cooper Webb, Lucas Coenen, Tom Vialle, Simon Laengenfelder, Max Anstie, Andrea Adamo, Ruben Fernandez, Camden McLellan… and that is just the first 20 names that spring to mind!  Apart from the injury-affected American National Champions who have to miss it, we most definitely have the very best of the best here at Matterley Basin!

Last year’s victors Team France return with the same line-up, the only one consisting of three World Champions in the shape of Febvre, Vialle, and Renaux.  2023 runners-up Team Australia have the mighty Lawrence brothers aiming to take the title Down Under for the very first time, and Team Netherlands can bring the new MX2 World Champion De Wolf into the fray, as well as welcoming back Herlings for the first time in three years. Team Spain are led by the now double MXGP World Champion Prado in their shot at a first ever MXoN podium!

MATTERLEY BASIN (United Kingdom) 2 October 2024 – It’s here at last! The 2024 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations is getting ready to go at the epic Matterley Basin circuit in the south of Great Britain, set to host the event for the third time in its short history!

The rolling Hampshire valley is a perfect setting for this massive event, with brilliant track visibility, dramatic elevation changes, and huge spectator areas which always create an incredible atmosphere for this monumental event!  Both of the MXoNs at this circuit have generated winning teams in the middle of a streak of victories, but also been more famous for their individual winners in the memories of fans!

The 2006 event was the second of a seven-year run of team victories for Team USA, but the legend that is Stefan Everts was racing internationally for the last time and took a famous double race win over the revered American James Stewart. That put Team Belgium 2nd overall with Team New Zealand in third.

In 2017, Team France took its fourth win in a run of five, but loudly-cheered local British hotshot Max Anstie defeated an in-form Jeffrey Herlings in both of his races to help put Team Great Britain on the podium at home, behind Herlings’ Team Netherlands trio and a solid team effort from winners France.

Since then, the last four editions of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations have all been won by the host nations! Team Netherlands achieving a historical first win ever in the event, at Assen in 2019, then in 2021, Team Italy gave the legend of Antonio Cairoli his only career MXoN Gold Medal on home sand at Mantova. Then Team USA ended an 11-year drought in the competition in impressive fashion, winning at their RedBud stronghold with massive home support!

Finally, last season, Team France triumphed in front of a massive home crowd at the incredible Ernee venue, aided by a 1-2 finish in the second race for Maxime Renaux and Tom Vialle.  It would probably be the shock of the century to see Team GB continue this trend with three riders who do not compete at GPs regularly, but as always with the Nations, and with Motocross in general, anything could happen!

Team France come in as defending Champions, and in fact they have won six of the last nine Monster Energy Motocross of Nations titles! With exactly the same line-up as last year’s event, Romain Febvre, Tom Vialle, and Maxime Renaux will be wearing numbers 1, 2, and 3, and despite an injury-interrupted year for the two 450 riders, Vialle has had a strong season in the USA and could be the glue that keep this winning combination together. They are the only team with three World Champions in their line-up, although as with all of last year’s top four Nations, none of them have scored a GP win this season.

Team Australia feature two of the biggest stars in Motocross racing with brothers Jett Lawrence and Hunter Lawrence both on factory 450 Honda machinery, joined by top Australian Championship rider Kyle Webster, and could well be the favourites for the event after finishing second last year.  It would be their first ever success at the MXoN, and in a country that speaks their language they could well have the busiest transporter area in the paddock!

Team Italy were surprise podium finishers at Ernee last year, and racing with numbers 7, 8, and 9 they return with the same trio that got them there in ’23.  Alberto Forato has been in good form since his return from injury, Andrea Adamo also finished on the podium in the final MX2 Grand Prix and has a point to prove after an otherwise disappointing season as defending MX2 World Champion. Andrea Bonacorsi had a promising first year in Grand Prix racing, switching from MX2 to MXGP early in the season and finishing tenth in the series.  An outside bet of getting there again, but all three are strong and consistent.

Team Germany, bring Ken Roczen back once more to the MXoN after he took overall victory in the MXGP class last year, and joined by Simon Laengenfelder he has a good MX2 rider with him as well. Amazingly, Simon wasn’t born when their Open class rider, Max Nagl, first competed at the Nations, but the 37-year-old has dominated the German International Championship in his home country, and re-united with Roczen as two-thirds of their winning 2012 team, they could well rise to the podium.

Team Belgium have had a torrid end to the season with injuries, and at one point their participation looked to be in doubt, but Jago Geerts, Lucas Coenen, and Brent van Doninck will line up at Matterley. Both 450 riders have had injury-affected seasons, but Coenen will be looking to put a few 450s to shame with his blistering speed that saw him win the last three MX2 Grands Prix of the year!

Team Switzerland return with one of the most experienced line-ups with Jeremy Seewer, Arnaud Tonus, and Valentin Guillod, while Team Spain sees now double World Champion Jorge Prado spearhead their campaign for the podium, with the same teammates as last year I the shape of Oriol Oliver and Ruben Fernandez.

Eighth last year, Team USA look to have a stronger squad in 2024, despite the injury to their new 450 National Champion Chase Sexton. The legend of Eli Tomac will make his first appearance in the UK outdoors, and his addition is a mouth-watering prospect, especially alongside his experience teammate Cooper Webb, and the only returnee from last year’s event, Aaron Plessinger.  They are definitely contenders for the podium, maybe even the win!

Team Slovenia and Team Great Britain were the other top ten teams last season, and five-time World Champion Tim Gajser will be keen to prove a point after narrowly losing the MXGP world crown a week ago. Jan Pancar is a rising star capable of getting amongst the top guys as well! The home team bring veteran Tommy Searle back to the MXGP class, with 2017 Matterley winner Max Anstie coming across from the USA to get the home crowd roaring once more! The enigma that is four-time British Champion Conrad Mewse, who has defeated Jeffrey Herlings in the UK this year, looks to bring his domestic pace to the Nations for his home fans!

After a disastrous event in 2023, Team Netherlands wear numbers 52, 53, and 54 this year, but Jeffrey Herlings has been phenomenal at times this season and will be going all-out for a second Nations win for his country, especially alongside new MX2 World Champion Kay de Wolf and many-time Nations winner Glenn Coldenhoff. Definitely contenders for the top positions!

The 77th edition of the event will see the huge participation teams, including the special team representing FIM Latin America, and other teams coming from different continents such as Rep of South Africa, Chile, Japan, Venezuela and Brazil. When we talk about the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations, we obviously also talk about the previous winners and legends, who will compete, and this year and we have a long list of motocross legends involved and the 2024 Monster Energy Motocross of Nations is loaded with talent.

Of course, last weekend in Spain, the MXGP and MX2 champions were crowned in Jorge Prado and Kay De Wolf and these two riders will line-up for Spain and The Netherlands, but these two riders are just a tip of the iceberg in what will be a sensational event with brilliant competition. Prado a four-time World champion with 49 Grand Prix victories could be the big star in England, full of confidence and ready to try and get Team Spain on the podium.

AMA supercross and Supermotocross champion, Jett Lawrence could also be the big star of the show as he tries to help Australia win their first ever MXoN overall. The Aussies began their MXoN journey way back in 1984 and since have finished on the podium a handful of times, but never taken the Chamberlain trophy back to Australia. Many are saying Jett and his older brother, Hunter could sweep their classes and their third rider, Kyle Webster might surprise a lot of people in the MX2 class.

Let’s not forget three men with a bunch of AMA and World titles between then, Jeffrey Herlings, Tim Gajser and Eli Tomac. Herlings and Gajser with five World motocross championships between them, not to mention, Herlings 108 Grand Prix wins and Gajser with 49 overall victories. Then we have AMA legend, Eli Tomac, who has seven AMA titles and 96 AMA overall victories. Those three have been so big for our sport over the last 15 years.

While it might be tough for Slovenian to grab the overall team win next Sunday, both Herlings and Tomac will be trying to add their second MXoN team win to their trophy cabinets. Herlings winning with The Netherlands in 2019 at home in Assen, The Netherlands and Tomac winning at home at Redbud in 2022. Both deserve another Chamberlain trophy in their CV’s.

What about two of the best performers at this event, Romain Febvre of Team France and Glenn Coldenhoff of The Netherlands. Febvre a former MXGP World champion has won this event with France on four occasions, first in his MXoN rookie year in 2015, then again in 2016, 2017 and finally last year. As for Coldenhoff, he along with Herlings (and Calvin Vlaanderen) took that win in 2019, but the biggest performances of Coldenhoff came with his 1-1-1-1 race results in 2018 and 2019. Both love Matterley Basin and both can easily lead their countries to victory next Sunday.

Cooper Webb, who will race the MX2 class for Team USA this year hasn’t won the event yet, but has come so close in both 2015 and 2016 and this two time AMA supercross champion and 2016 AMA 250 motocross champion wants desperately to win, after a crash cost his team the win at Maggiora in 2016.

Of course, we also have a handful of former World and AMA champions involved, Tom Vialle, Maxime Renaux, Hunter Lawrence, Aaron Plessinger and Ken Roczen. Between them eight major AMA or FIM titles and all will be involved in the tough battle next weekend. All but Lawrence have won this event at some points, although Lawrence has won his class on two occasions.

In all, we have eight riders who have tasted victory with their country at the MXoN, those being, Max Nagl and Ken Roczen in 2012, Febvre (in 2015, 2016 and 2023), Vialle and Renaux in 2023, Herlings and Coldenhoff in 2019, and Tomac in 2022.

Can one of these men lead Germany, France, The Netherlands or America to another win, or will the Aussies and the Lawrence brothers come out and take their first ever victory at the MXoN? None of us know for now, but what we do know, its going to be fireworks as soon as all these legends take to the track of Matterley Basin next weekend.

Destiny took a second shot at Team USA’s Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations prospects on Saturday, sidelining team captain and MXGP Class rider Chase Sexton with an injury, but another former American champion is joining the fight. Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Eli Tomac will replace Red Bull KTM’s Sexton to keep America’s 2024 world title hopes alive.

Sexton’s injury, sustained at the final round of the American season in Las Vegas, came only three days after previous team member Chance Hymas confirmed he would be out with a tweaked knee. Following that stroke of bad luck, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Cooper Webb volunteered to race the MX2 class.

This leaves Open Class rider Aaron Plessinger with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing as the only original member on the 2024 roster. Team USA is managed by five-time Motocross World Champion Roger Decoster.

“Due to the unfortunate racing incident Chase was involved in at the final round of the season, I was the next one in line to take his place for Team USA,” Tomac said. “Aaron, Cooper and I are ready to give it our best effort at Matterley Basin. This is very short notice for my team, but we are going to make it happen!”

AMA Director of Racing Mike Pelletier thanked Tomac for joining the 2024 effort at the last minute.

“Yet again, a proud American motocross racer is stepping up to meet fate’s call,” Pelletier said. “Eli Tomac is one of the sport’s great champions, and it’s our honor to welcome him back to Team USA for the 2024 MXON. On behalf of the AMA and all U.S. motocross fans, I want to thank Eli for rising to the occasion and of course to wish Chase a speedy and complete recovery. I also want to acknowledge Star Racing’s commitment to scramble and thank them for providing another rider.”

The 31-year-old Tomac is a four-time American Motocross Champion and a two-time Supercross Champion. He raced the MXGP class in 2022 when Team USA won the MXON at Red Bud MX in Buchanan, Michigan. This year will be Tomac’s fifth time on Team USA on 4,5 and 6 of October in United Kingdom.

Cooper Webb has been confirmed as the replacement for the injured Chance Hymas in the 2024 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations at Matterley Basin. Webb will compete in the MX2 class aboard the YZ250F, marking his first MXoN appearance since 2016.

Webb, a five-time Supercross and Motocross Champion in the USA, led Team USA to a third-place finish in 2016 as the team captain and secured a second-place finish in the Open class in 2015. This upcoming event will mark his third appearance at the MXoN

“I’m so excited to be headed to MXoN,” Webb shared. “It’s a fire drill situation, but I’m extremely grateful. I’ll be all in on 250 prep after Vegas SMX, and I’m excited for the opportunity to represent my country. Let’s do this!”

With Webb’s return, Team USA is ready to make a strong bid for victory at Matterley Basin.
